Seas the Week: Durban's sailors prepare for thrilling regatta

WHILE hooves will fly at the Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday, some of the country's leading sailors are expected to make a splash when they participate in the MSC Week that begins on Monday, offshore from Durban.
Given the unpredictable nature of conditions that can be expected at this regatta, which will run until Friday, the Point Yacht Club (race organisers), have aptly named it: Seas the Week.
Competitors will race in two categories; ORC Class Championships and the L26 National Championships.
With the country's most prestigious yacht race on the horizon (Lipton Challenge Cup, August 25), competitors view the MSC Week as an ideal opportunity to sharpen their seafaring skills.
A fleet of 25 yachts are expected to assemble at the MSC's 11am start on Monday, including the 13 L26s that will be lining up for their national championship at this event.
As July is the mid-year holiday season, many school boats will make up the field in the L26 category.

Anna Correa sailing the seas

Anna Correa, a crew member on MS Performance Sailing's L26 Velocity, and matric pupil at Eden College, will be the vessel's helmsman.
While Correa has featured at the previous two MSC Weeks, this year's regatta is extra-special for her.
'It will be my first time as a skipper and it is a great privilege to make use of home waters as I get to enhance my local knowledge. I know many of the participants and people involved, so it's overall more fun.'
Correa took to sailing in her Grade 9 year and has traversed the waters in various parts of the country participating in club and national competitions.
'Sailing has become such a massive part of my life. I've met people and learnt lessons that will forever impact my life. I will always try to keep myself involved in sailing.'

Hollywoodbets Durban July: meet the first black horse racing announcer in isiZulu on TV
When it comes to South Africa's black pioneers, the name Sanele Mchunu now stands alongside the greats from Comrades Marathon champion Sam Tshabalala, to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, and music star Khaya Mthethwa. Hailing from Mpophomeni in Howick, Mchunu has carved out his own place in history as the first black person to announce horse races in isiZulu on national television. The 41-year-old, who now lives in KwaNyuswa near Pinetown, was hired by Race Coast and on Saturday July 5 takes to the mic at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July, a moment that marks both personal triumph and a step forward for representation in the horse racing industry. Speaking to Isolezwe, Mchunu reflected on the opportunity that came his way in 2023, when Hollywoodbets sought to revitalise horse racing by making it more accessible to a broader audience. 'I was challenged to announce the races in isiZulu something I'd never even dreamed of,' he said. 'But I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.' Since then, Mchunu has become a regular voice in the sport and hopes his role will open doors for others. 'Even after Smanga Khumalo's historic Durban July win, there's still only one Black horse trainer in the country,' he said. 'This is an industry with huge employment potential, and it's time more Black South Africans got involved - not just at major events like the Durban July, but throughout the year.' Mchunu's journey began in the classrooms of KwaMqhathi Primary in KwaMpande, before moving to KwaNyuswa's St Lawrence Primary and later completing matric at Khabazela High School in Embo. He went on to study Video Technology at what is now the Durban University of Technology. His professional media career began in 2006 as a video editor at the SABC, followed by stints at SuperSport TV and, eventually, Gallop TV under where he now works as a studio producer. While he hasn't yet married, Mchunu is a proud father of three and continues to make strides, not only for himself, but for the next generation of broadcasters, sports enthusiasts, and horse racing professionals.

Image: PHILL MAGAKOE / AFP The last time South Africans saw Damian Willemse in a Springbok jersey was during the early part of the 2023 Rugby World Cup victory parade through the streets of South Africa. Nobody could get Willemse out of the kit he wore with much distinction during that World Cup-final win over the All Blacks. It was probably only after the stench of the kit got to the players on the bus that it decided he needed a fresh outfit. Unfortunately, Willemse hasn't worn the Springboks jersey since sustaining a couple of injuries that kept him out of the entire 2024 international season. The jersey he cherishes so much was taken away from him. A lot has changed since Damian Willemse last wore the No 15 jersey, as the Sharks' Aphelele Fassi having a breakout 2024 to put him top of the list as far as the fullback berth is concerned. Next Stay Close ✕ Fassi made eight starts at fullback in Willemse's absence in 2024 after seemingly leapfrogging Le Roux as the Boks first-choice No 15. 'The Weekend Special' - a nickname Fassi earned because his surname is similar to South Africa's music legend Brenda Fassie - played in most of the big matches for the Boks. He faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Argentina in the Rugby Championship decider in Mbombela and featured in the big November Test against England at Twickenham. Fassi also started in the season opener against the Barbarians as Willemse was still serving a suspension for a dangerous tackle while playing for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship match. But this weekend, against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Willemse will finally feature again in a Bok jersey after almost 20 months. Willemse certainly knows he is going to be in the spotlight after Fassi's bright performances. But the Strand-born player is keen to make up for lost time. 'I'm looking forward to it, very excited. Lots of nerves as well, it's my first Test match in a couple of years since the World Cup final,' Willemse told SuperSport TV this week ahead of the Italy clash. 'A lot has changed, especially at the international level. The rest of the boys who have played in the position have done an excellent job. They have set the standard. 'For me, coming in, I know there will be a lot of eyes on me. But I'm just focussed on my primary job. Hopefully I can have a good game.' Fassi has proven to be a lethal counter-attacking player in the new era of the Boks' offensive play. He cut the line beautifully last season, while he showed off his attacking kicks in the wet against the BaaBaas. But Willemse will also welcome the Boks' new style of play as a lethal runner from the back himself. The Stormers man has wonderful anticipation and can also slip in flyhalf to distribute when needed.

Willie le Roux on the brink of 100 caps as Springboks kick off Test season

Image: BackpagePix Veteran Willie le Roux is set to earn his 99th cap for the Springboks off the bench on Saturday against Italy, with his century to follow shortly thereafter according to Bok mentor Rassie Erasmus. If all goes to plan in the first Test against the Italians and he is fit, Le Roux could run out in Gqeberha for his hundredth game for the national team. However, there is also a Georgia Test in Nelspruit where he could feature to get him to the milestone. Erasmus has set certain targets for the Boks over the next three games. Should they reach their first on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld (5pm kick-off), the home ground of Le Roux, the fullback will be on the verge of joining a select group of Springboks who have played in 100 Test matches. Willemse is, of course, a double World Cup winner alongside Le Roux but missed last season with injuries. The Lions' Quan Horn (24) is the young fullback in the Bok setup but has only played one Test so far.
