Pineapple A New Driver Of Sarawak's Agricultural Economy

Barnama4 days ago
KUCHING, July 24 (Bernama) -- Pineapple is no longer just a secondary crop but has emerged as one of the drivers of agricultural economic growth in Sarawak, said Sarawak Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.
He said Sarawak is not only blessed with fertile land but also holds great potential in high-value agriculture such as pineapple cultivation.
"Through strategic cooperation between the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) and the state government, various key initiatives have been implemented, including crop incentive programmes, farm infrastructure, and research into pineapple waste for bioeconomy use.
'This is in line with the government's direction to advance modern, smart and sustainable agriculture,' he said in his speech for the launch of the LPNM Sarawak 2025 Customer Day and Project Assistance Presentation Ceremony here today.
His speech was read out by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Sarawak (M-FICORD), Sirai Daha.
Dr Rundi said that based on last year's data, the total pineapple cultivation area in Malaysia was 18,135 hectares, and it is not impossible for this figure to increase by 2030, with Sarawak targeting to expand its pineapple plantations to 20,000 hectares by then.
He said this achievement, however, would not be possible without the continuous efforts of all parties, with modern technology, digitalisation, and the modernisation of farming practices being key to ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of the pineapple industry.
'Not only in the domestic market but also internationally, and most importantly, is the strong cooperation between the state government and LPNM,' he said, adding that it is not impossible for Sarawak to emerge as the country's main pineapple producer.
At the event, the e-Pineapple system was also launched, making Sarawak the first state to pioneer its implementation — proving the state's readiness to face the challenges of digital transformation in the agri-food sector, in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy agenda.

Value Store Operator Eco-Shop Posts Higher Earnings, Revenue In FY2025

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd recorded a net profit of RM204.32 million for its financial year ended May 31, 2025 (FY2025), from RM177.28 million a year earlier. The Johor-based dollar-store chain stated that the improved net profit was achieved despite higher operating costs arising from its expanded store network and the implementation of minimum wage policies. Revenue for the year also strengthened to RM2.79 billion against RM2.40 billion, underpinned by the net addition of 74 new stores during the financial year. 'Same-store sales growth (SSSG) recorded a marginal decline of 0.4 per cent, reflecting normalisation in consumer spending at mature outlets, partly attributed to product availability challenges,' the group said in a Bursa Malaysia filing today. The number of sales transactions increased 21.6 per cent to 114.8 million in FY2025. For the fourth quarter, the retailer recorded a net profit of RM49.41 million against RM63.27 million year-on-year. Revenue for the quarter, however, rose to RM688.98 million against RM640.67 million a year earlier, primarily driven by the continued expansion of the group's store network, with the net addition of 22 new stores in the quarter versus 19 in the fourth quarter of 2024. The total store count increased to 371 stores in the fourth quarter of 2025 from 297 in the fourth quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, the company declared an interim single-tier dividend of 1.0 sen per ordinary share or approximately RM57.5 million in respect of FY2025, to be paid on Aug 26, 2025. The entitlement date for the dividend falls on Aug 12, 2025. According to the filing, the number of sales transactions increased 12.4 per cent to 28.9 million in the fourth quarter of FY2025.

MPOB expects palm oil exports to recover in second half of 2025

NEW DELHI: The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) expects palm oil exports to recover in the second half of this year due to stronger festival season demand in key markets. "The demand, particularly from India, is due to the need to replenish stock for the festive season, attractive palm oil pricing and lower import duty on crude vegetable oils,' MPOB director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir told Bernama. Ahmad Parveez was in New Delhi last week to speak at a conference organised by the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers' Association (IVPA). In the first half of this year, Malaysian exports of palm oil and palm-based products dipped 7.4 per cent to 11.39 million tonnes compared with the January-June period last year, according to MPOB figures. Palm oil exports were recorded at 6.95 million tonnes during the half-year period, representing a drop of 7.7 per cent over the corresponding period in 2024 as demand weakened in India, China, the European Union, Bangladesh and Egypt. Nonetheless, despite a drop in the overall palm oil exports in the first half of 2025, Malaysia saw a growth in volumes to the Philippines, Iran, Kenya and Nigeria. Ahmad Parveez said that although export tonnage had dropped, Malaysia's earnings from palm oil and palm products during the January-June 2025 period surged 9.3 per cent to RM53.43 billion compared with the same period last year. The value of palm oil exports was almost RM34 billion. Malaysian palm oil has gained in geographical reach in recent years. Malaysia's full-year palm oil exports by volume this year are projected to be 5.3 per cent lower than the 16.9 million tonnes recorded in 2024. On the Indian market, Ahmad Parveez said demand remains particularly strong in the food services, household, and food manufacturing sectors. However, there are certain challenges, and one of them is India's import tax. "A key concern is India's import policy, particularly the frequent adjustments to import duties. The recent hike in effective duties on crude palm oil to 27.5 per cent, and on refined palmolein to 35.75 per cent, has significantly narrowed palm oil's natural price advantage compared to soft oils such as soybean and sunflower," Ahmad Parveez said. "While we acknowledge India's policy objective to strengthen domestic oilseed production under the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm, such measures have made palm oil imports increasingly cost-sensitive and less predictable," he said. The price premium of palm oil, along with ample global soybean oil supplies, has led to a drop in palm oil's share in India's vegetable oil imports to 46 per cent this year from 59 per cent in 2023, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) chief executive officer Belvinder Sron said at the same New Delhi industry conference. However, Malaysia's share in Indian palm oil imports reached 35 per cent in the first half of this year compared with 30 per cent in 2023, Sron said in her presentation. - Bernama
