Body of man who fell into open drain after stepping on broken slab found
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 5 lakh compensation from the CM fund and directed action against negligent officials. An additional Rs 4 lakh was provided from the disaster management fund, taking the total aid to Rs 9 lakh. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar also initiated action against the errant officials.
According to family members, Suresh was swept away by the strong current of the drain which was overflowing after heavy rain, around 7am on Saturday.
The family alleged that despite complaints, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) started the rescue operation after three hours.
Later, teams from SDRF and Suez India launched a rescue mission with over 100 personnel, but it was a local resident, Buddha, who eventually found the body, residents claimed.
On the directives of the CM, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar suspended junior engineer Raman Kumar for failing to inspect the area despite complaints received through IGRS and the control room.
Assistant engineer Alok Kumar was also issued a show-cause notice. Cleaning contractor Ankit Kumar has been blacklisted and penalised. An FIR was also lodged against the vendor and the local BJP corporator.
The commissioner said the work of drain cleaning in the area was of poor quality. Residents alleged that the drain slab was broken for months, and no one paid attention despite repeated complaints by residents and the victim's family.
"No one helped us. We searched and found the body on our own. Who will look after my children now?" Suresh's wife, Renu, said.
She demanded Rs 50 lakh as compensation which was supported by relatives and neighbours. Locals staged protest and shouted slogans against the municipal corporation and officials.
Renu alleged that they had filed complaints twice about the broken drain slab, but no action was taken. "We had to get the drain outside our house repaired on our own," she said.
LMC launches drive to cover open manholes, drains
Lucknow: A day after a man died by falling into a drain in Thakurganj, LMC has launched a drive to cover all open drains and manholes. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar and senior officials inspected the site and ordered 24x7 monitoring through a control room. Mayor Sushma Kharkwal said negligence would not be tolerated and urged people to report open drains on toll-free number 1533.

Bank officer held for 27L fraud
Lucknow: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the UP Police on Monday arrested Chheda Lal Anuragi, former bank officer, accused of orchestrating Rs 27 lakh fraud by opening fake accounts in collusion with bank staff and others. He was arrested in Agra where he was posted as branch manager at Indian Bank, Holipura. EOW said that the case dates back to 2006, when Anuragi served as retail banking officer at the Allahabad Bank branch in Atarra, Banda. He along with other officials allegedly opened two fraudulent accounts using forged documents and IDs. Similar fake accounts were opened in Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Using these fake accounts, chequebooks were issued and account payee cheques were deposited at Allahabad Bank's Atarra branch. Courier stafffalsely cleared these cheques, allowing payment of large sums. Investigations revealed that the original accounts held only nominal balances (as little as Rs 1,000–2,000), yet multiple high-value cheques were cleared. The case was transferred to the EOW on Aug 20, 2015. Subsequent investigation found 11 individuals guilty — including six bank employees and five others. The five private accused have already been arrested. "Anuragi was apprehended on July 14, 2025, following a special arrest operation ordered by EOW director general Neera Rawat," said a senior EOW officer.

Burglary at two Army officers' residences in high security zone
Lucknow: Two senior Army officers fell prey to burglaries in MRA Vihar Govt Housing Colony, raising concerns over safety in high security zone. The thefts took place on July 11 while both officers were away on leave. Upon returning, they discovered forced entry into their houses-- House Nos. 15B and 14B-- and missing valuables, including jewellery and cash. Colonel Hari Kumar Gupta, posted at Base Hospital, Lucknow, was on leave from June 15 to July 14. On July 11, his domestic help called him to inform him about the theft. Gupta rushed back from Gorakhpur the next morning and found the door's latch removed and rooms ransacked. A gold necklace set and approximately Rs 70,000 in cash were reported stolen. He also discovered that the neighbouring house had been similarly broken into. Major Debashish Mohan Kapoor, residing next door at 14B, returned from leave on the same day after being informed by his aide about the broken lock. Kapoor found his cupboard broken and several items missing: two gold chains, six silver toe rings, a silver anklet and Rs 1,000 cash. "Both FIRs were filed on July 13 at Alambagh police station. S-I Dinesh Singh has been assigned to investigate both incidents," said SHO Alambagh Subhash Chandra. Police suspect a coordinated burglary and are examining CCTV footage and technical clues from the scene. Given the proximity of the homes and the similarity in modus operandi, officials believe a single group may be responsible.
