Shubman Gill Breaks World Record Of Scoring Most Runs In A Test By Visiting Batter
Last Updated: Gill scored 430 runs (1st and 2nd innings combined) for India in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Shubman Gill now holds the record of scoring the most runs in a Test match by a visiting batter. The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab broke former Australian captain and star batter Mark Taylor's record of 326 runs. During the 1998 Australia-Pakistan Test in Peshawar, Taylor amassed a total of 426 runs. He remained unbeaten on 334 in the first innings and scored 92 in the second. Gill, on the other hand, scored 269 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test against England and 161 runs in the second. Only Graham Gooch of England has scored more runs in a Test match than Gill. During the 1990 Lord's Test played between India and England, Gooch amassed a total of 456 runs against the Mohammad Azharuddin-led side. In that match, Gooch scored 333 runs in the first innings and 123 in the second. The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab is the fifth batter in the world after England's Graham Gooch, Australia's Mark Taylor, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, and the West Indies' Brian Lara to score 400 runs in a Test match. During his stay at the crease in the second innings, Gill faced 162 balls and hammered 13 fours and 8 sixes. He added 110 runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant (65) and 175 runs for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who has also crossed the fifty-run mark. Gill is the first batter in the world to score a double century and 150 runs in one Test match and overall the second batter after Allan Border of Australia to score at least 150 runs in both innings of a Test match. During the Australia-Pakistan Test match played in Lahore in 1980, Border remained unbeaten on 150 runs in the first innings and scored 153 in the second.
