Work begins on £155m South Lanarkshire wind farm set to power 45,000 homes
Work has officially begun on a multi-million pound wind farm in South Lanarkshire, marking a key milestone in Scotland's renewable energy ambitions.
The £155 million Mill Rig Wind Farm, brought forward by leading UK renewables developer OnPath Energy, will generate enough renewable energy to power approximately 45,000 homes annually once fully operational in 2026.
Construction activity on site, near Darvel, is now well underway, with essential infrastructure work – including access roads, substation foundations, and site preparation – progressing at pace.
The 33.4 MW onshore wind project will feature some of the UK's most advanced turbines, harnessing cutting-edge technology to maximise energy generation and efficiency.
Over the coming months, teams will prepare crane pads and lay the turbine foundations. The first turbine components are expected to arrive on-site in the Autumn 2025, with installation and commissioning scheduled for early 2026.
Alan Wells, project manager at OnPath Energy, said: 'Breaking ground on Mill Rig is a huge milestone for OnPath Energy and a major step forward in delivering this strategically important renewable energy project.
'The start of construction marks the culmination of extensive planning, environmental assessments, and collaboration with local stakeholders to ensure the project is developed responsibly and builds community value for local people and businesses to support a just transition to net zero that is fair and inclusive for everyone.
'Our team is now focused on progressing construction efficiently, with strict adherence to best environmental practices and health and safety standards.'
Mill Rig is set to provide long-term economic benefits to the local community and Scotland's renewable energy sector.
As part of the Hamilton-based firm's OnPath Together development approach throughout construction, the project is expected to directly support around 300 jobs, with many more generated indirectly through the wider supply chain.
OnPath Energy has committed to prioritising local contractors and businesses, with £91 million invested within 60km of the site.
Alan added: 'Beyond delivering clean, green electricity, Mill Rig Wind Farm represents a major opportunity to invest in local talent, create jobs, and provide long-term economic value.
'We are committed to maximising the benefits of our projects, from supporting local businesses during construction to reinvesting in communities through our OnPath Together approach to development.'
Over its lifetime Mill Rig Wind Farm will deliver a £5 million community fund supporting local groups, and environmental projects within a 10km radius of the site plus, South Lanarkshire Council is set to receive approximately £18 million in business rates.
Mill Rig Wind Farm is the latest in a series of landmark renewable energy projects delivered by OnPath Energy.
Locran Hayes, contracts manager at RJ McLeod said: 'We're very pleased to be awarded the contract to construct Mill Rig Wind Farm.
'This is our fourth project with the OnPath team who recognise the skills and experience of our staff and operatives, as well as our track record of using local resources and services. We look forward to jointly delivering this important energy asset.'
OnPath Energy recently completed the Kype Muir Extension Wind Farm (now owned by funds managed by Schroders Greencoat LLP), which became the first in the UK to feature turbines with 200-metre tip heights – a breakthrough in onshore wind technology.
With a growing portfolio, OnPath Energy has secured planning permission for 14 wind farms and currently operates 12 onshore wind farms across the UK, with a combined generation capacity of around 252 MW.

Shares in Glasgow's iomart fall 20% after dividend scrapped
However, the company underlined a strong performance by Atech Cloud, the Marlow-based business it acquired for £57m in November. Iomart said at the time that the acquisition, which increased its headcount to 650, would significantly strengthen its position as 'one of the UK's principal providers of secure cloud services across public, private, and hybrid environments'. A six-month contribution from Atech helped to deliver a 13% rise in revenue to £143.5m for iomart over the period. Net debt at iomart surged to £101.9m from £42.3m at the same stage last year, following cash outflow of around £57m associated with the Atech deal. Read more: Richard Last, executive chairman of iomart, said: "The year has been one of both challenge and transformation for iomart. The group's trading performance was mixed, with customer churn impacting revenue and profits. On the positive side we have seen good order bookings growth in the year, which gives the board confidence in achieving our medium-term growth strategy. "The acquisition of Atech during the year was a significant milestone, substantially enhancing the group's scale, credibility, and capabilities in public cloud and security. Since acquisition, Atech has delivered revenue growth and profitability in line with our expectations, reinforcing the value of this strategic move. "Our focus for FY26 will be to improve the operating efficiency of the group, address churn in our self-managed and private cloud customer base, increase sales momentum in high-growth service areas, including providing Atech with the support to flourish, and to reduce our level of debt. The board is committed to delivering disciplined execution, operational efficiency, and improved value for shareholders.' On the decision to suspend dividends, the company stated: "The board believes it is in the best interest of shareholders to forego the payment of a final dividend, with future dividends restored based on improved operating profitability and a reduced overall level of indebtedness." Iomart reported a statutory loss before tax of £53.2m, reflecting a £52.9m non-cash exceptional goodwill impairment charge relating to the iomart Cloud Services Cash Generating Unit. Iomar said in a statement: 'This reflects both the shift away from low growth, heritage product areas and the previously disclosed accelerated customer churn in certain areas of this CGU. 'This non-cash charge has no impact on the group's operational performance or cash flows but does result in a large statutory loss after tax of £55.1m in the year to 31 March 2025 (2024: £6.4m profit).' Shares closed down 22.8% or 6.5p, at 22p.

Hong Kong-based digital asset platform OSL Group completes $300 million equity financing
HONG KONG/SHANGHAI, July 25 (Reuters) - Hong Kong-based digital asset platform OSL Group ( opens new tab said on Friday it had completed $300 million of equity financing, the latest sign of feverish investor interest in cryptocurrencies. The deal, which the company said was the biggest publicly disclosed equity raise in Asia's digital asset space, comes days before Hong Kong's stablecoin bill takes effect on August 1, and could add fuel to a rally in shares related to virtual assets. OSL shares have surged 120% so far this year. Hong Kong's defacto central bank on Wednesday cautioned against growing frothiness of the market around stablecoins, saying the hype had led to "excessive exuberance". Proceeds from the share sale would be used to support global initiatives including stablecoin development, licensing efforts, and the build-out of a digital payment network, OSL said in a statement. "The funding will accelerate our global build-out — particularly in regulated stablecoin infrastructure and compliant payment rails," said Ivan Wong, chief financial officer of OSL Group. Since transforming last year into a company fully dedicated to digital assets, OSL has secured an exchange licence in Australia and completed acquisitions in Japan and Europe. OSL has also said it would step up investment in the so-called Real-World-Assets business, converting traditional assets into digital tokens. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to assets such as fiat currencies. Hong Kong is racing against the U.S. in setting up a licensing framework for stablecoin issuers.

Baking giant Bimbo vows to cut artificial colorings by end-2026
MEXICO CITY, July 24 (Reuters) - Grupo Bimbo ( opens new tab, one of the world's largest breadmakers, said on Thursday it would cut artificial colorings from all of its products by the end of next year, as consumers turn more health-conscious when shopping for staple foods. Shorter term, executives at the Mexico City-based company said Bimbo's entire bread bun and breakfast range would by the end of this year have a positive nutrition - or a so-called health star rating - of at least 3.5 stars, as it looks to simplify recipes and boost nutrition by 2030. Scientists have linked synthetic dyes such as Red 40 and Yellow 5 to behavioral challenges, allergies and respiratory issues in children and other vulnerable consumers, and some major regulators have ordered usage caps and label warnings. In parts of the U.S., some activists have pushed for bans on synthetic dyes particularly in food destined for school meals. Bimbo estimates it is the largest single supplier of baked goods worldwide, with a close to 4% global market share of a $641 billion industry. It sells thousands of well-known staple products worldwide such as sliced bread and packaged snacks. Last year, these brought in $22 billion in sales. Executives said they did not expect a major cost impact from cutting artificial colorings. "By the end of 2026, we will have removed artificial colors from all our portfolio and by 2030 we're going to ensure that 100% of our baked goods and snacks will be made with simple, natural recipes," Bimbo Chief Financial Officer Diego Gaxiola told analysts in a call. "We're seeing that for younger consumers functional benefits are clearly important. It's not a fad, it's a trend."
