Bupa has admitted to engaging in misleading or deceptive conduct and making false or misleading representations by advising customers they were not entitled to private health insurance benefits for their entire claim, when in fact this was not the case.
Bupa APAC CEO Nick Stone has issued an apology and acknowledged that it should 'never have happened.'
'Our priority has been to communicate and compensate our affected health insurance customers and providers, along with putting in place measures to help ensure this does not happen again,' he said in a statement.
Bupa has started compensating affected members, medical providers and hospitals, and has paid $14.3million to parties for more than 4,100 affected claims to date.

Australia has made progress in reducing socioeconomic inequalities in life expectancy but men living in disadvantaged areas are still dying almost seven years earlier, a new report from the Australian National University has found. The study's lead author and ANU demographer, Sergey Timonin, said the gaps in life expectancy between the most advantaged and disadvantaged areas stopped widening just before the Covid pandemic began and did not significantly worsen during the lockdown years. 'Inequalities in life expectancy increased for many decades before peaking in 2017-2018,' Timonin said. 'Since then, there has been a positive trend toward narrowing these disparities, particularly among men. Despite this, Australians living in the most disadvantaged areas in 2020-22 still had life expectancies that were 4.9 years (females) and 6.6 years (males) shorter than those living in the most affluent areas. 'It means that that approximately 10% of Australians living in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic areas live, on average, seven or five years less than the 10% who live in the most socioeconomically advanced areas,' Timonin said. 'So it decreased approximately half a year for males and 0.4 years for females, compared to the peak in 2017. The change is not that great, but the trend has changed.' The research found that the three major causes of death consistently contributing to life expectancy gaps were lung cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and heart disease. 'In addition to chronic diseases, external causes such as suicide, road traffic injuries, and substance-related deaths also played a major role in life expectancy differences, particularly among men.' The study compared life expectancy in Australian socioeconomically advantaged and disadvantaged areas with national averages in countries such as Japan, a global leader in longevity, and the US. 'Female life expectancy in all Australian areas by socioeconomic status sits between Japan and the US, while male life expectancy in Australia's five most advantaged areas, comprising around half the population, surpasses Japan's national average,' Timonin said. 'While this may be bad news for Americans, it is good news for Australians. Even in our most disadvantaged areas, life expectancy is higher than the US average for both men and women.' The ANU researchers argue that continued monitoring of health inequalities is crucial for improving population health and informing effective policy.

Expat busts major myth about public transport in Sydney: 'Took me years to figure this out'
An Irish expat has only just realised the true cost of public transport in Sydney after months of believing her journeys cost $1. Rebecca, a lawyer who moved to the city at the end of last year, has been using her bank card to tap on and off buses, trams and train, but until recently she had no idea she was being charged more than the initial pre-authorisation fee. The expat thought the $1 payment her bank card registered every time she tapped on was the sum total of each journey and had no idea a higher amount was taken at a later day. 'Guys help I've been living in Sydney for seven months and just realised public transport isn't just $1 every time I tap,' she said on TikTok. 'Is this common knowledge? Am I actually dumb?' Rebecca isn't the only one who made this mistake. Fellow Irish expat Isabel shared that she recently had the same realisation in her own separate video. 'Five months spent thinking my commute only cost $1 each time...,' she wrote. The Irish expect shared a screenshot of her monthly spending on transport, showing she has spent $313.39 in June as of Wednesday. Sydney residents agreed with the pair, sharing their thoughts on the pre-authorisation fee. 'I've been here for two years nearly and have just found out recently about it,' one said. 'Tell me you don't check your bank statements, without telling me you don't check them.' 'I never look to see how much it costs. Out of sight, out of mind,' another agreed. 'It's taken me years to figure that out. I don't take public transport much though,' a third said. 'No one tells you it's not $1. I thought it was $1. Why don't they advertise it or something,' another commented. However, one viewer was surprised Rebecca didn't check her bank statements regularly to keep an eye on unauthorised transactions. They wrote: 'Do you not check your bank statements or have the app notify you when money is taken out? I'm so nervous about fraud charges that I see every cent that leaves my account!' The Irish expat said she 'rarely' checked her banking app. NSW Transport confirmed the $1 charge is temporary. 'After you tap on, a pre-authorisation amount of $1 is held temporarily. This will appear as a pending transaction on your statement,' it reads online. 'As you travel throughout the day, fares accumulate, and the total cost will be processed at the end of the day, replacing the $1 pre-authorisation.' Opal fares and single trip tickets will rise by an average of 2.5 per cent from July 14. For adults, Monday to Thursday will have a cap of $19.30 while there will be a daily cap of $9.65 on Fridays, the weekend and public holidays. The daily cap for children will be $9.65, with weekends and public holidays have a cap of $4.80.

The King and Queen's most expensive royal trips revealed
The royal family significantly increased its foreign travel in the year leading up to March 2025, marking a notable uptick in engagements following a period overshadowed by the King and the Princess of Wales undergoing cancer treatment. This surge in activity saw both the frequency and scope of overseas visits expand. Official reports for 2024/25 reveal 43 separate journeys by members of the Royal Family where travel costs were at least £17,000, a substantial rise from the 27 trips recorded in the previous 12 months. The King himself undertook 13 of these engagements, an increase from eight in 2023/24. Among these, the most expensive expedition was an 11-day visit by the King and Queen to the Commonwealth Samoa in October 2024. This extensive tour, which also included engagements in Australia, incurred travel costs totalling £400,535. As King of Australia, half of the flight expenses for this major overseas trip were funded by the Australian government. Following their attendance at the Commonwealth leaders' summit, the King and Queen made a widely reported trip to a luxury wellness retreat in Bengaluru, India, which was paid for privately. The King was also involved in the second most expensive trip on the list, a three-day visit with the Queen to Northern Ireland in March 2025 (£80,139). The third most expensive trip was a visit by the Prince of Wales to Estonia in March 2025, the cost of which included two earlier journeys by staff for planning purposes, and which added up to £55,846 in total. Completing the top five are a two-day trip by the King on the royal train in February 2025 to Staffordshire, to visit the JCB factory in Rocester and the Tower Brewery in Burton upon Trent, which cost £44,822; and a two-day trip by the Duke of Edinburgh to Estonia in January 2025 to visit the Royal Dragoon Guards while on a military operation, which cost £39,791. Of the 13 trips involving the King that appear on the list, eight were undertaken with the Queen and five by himself. There are no solo visits by the Queen on the list. Aside from the royal visits to Samoa / Australia, Estonia, Poland and northern France, the only other journeys outside the UK to feature on the list are: A two-day trip by the Duchess of Edinburgh to Italy in May 2024 to attend military remembrance events (£32,380) A one-day visit by the Prince of Wales to northern France in June 2024 as part of the D-Day commemorations (£25,696) A two-day visit by the Princess Royal to the Netherlands in September 2024 for events commemorating the Second World War (£17,327) A nine-day visit to Nepal by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in February 2025 (£26,028) A three-day visit to Dresden by the Duke of Kent in February 2025 (£22,332) And a return flight by the Princess Royal from a meeting of the International Olympics Committee in Kalamata in Greece in March 2025 (£21,440). Aside from the 13 trips on the list that involved either the King or the King and the Queen, 11 were undertaken by the Princess Royal; five by the Duke of Edinburgh; four by the Prince of Wales; three by the Duchess of Edinburgh; three by both the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh; two by the Duke of Kent; one by the Duchess of Gloucester; and one by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
