Emma Raducanu eases into Wimbledon second round as 'dangerous' fellow Brit shows off her weapons

The US Open champion had to dig out vital points against 17-year-old Mimi Xu on No 1 Court
Emma Raducanu is safely through to the second round of Wimbledon after a reasonably comfortable first round display.
The former US Open champion was up against Mingge Xu in an all-British encounter on No 1 Court.

And she put the foot down to prove she was too strong for the 17-year-old, winning in straight sets to book her spot in the next round.

Mingge showed glimpses of her promise and hopes are high for the teenage, but it's Raducanu who will carry forward the UK's hopes in the women's tournament after her 6-3, 6-3 victory, despite not being at her best.
Now she will face a tough test against former champion Marketa Vondrousova, who won in 2023.
If she successfully negotiates that match, then former World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka could lie in wait.
"I'm super pleased to have come through that match," Raducanu told the BBC. "It's so difficult playing another brit first round.
"When the draw came out, I can't say that I was loving it. Mimi's a really dangerous player. She's so young and has some amazing weapons at her disposal.
"Sometimes it's really difficult in the moment with nerves and adrenaline to have an idea of what's going on but I think I had some really good patches and some moments when I lost my focus and Mimi was able to come back.

"I'm really happy with how I toughed it out in the really crucial games and won the important points."

Former British No.1 tennis player banned from Wimbledon grounds

Former British No.1 tennis player banned from Wimbledon grounds Christopher 'Buster' Mottram was Britain's leading male player in the late 1970s and early 80s, but has been barred from Wimbledon since 2023 following 'misdemeanours' Buster Mottram, pictured during his tennis career, has been banned by Wimbledon (Image: MSI ) A divisive former tennis star has reportedly been excluded from Wimbledon. Christopher Mottram, known widely as 'Buster', was Britain's leading male player in the late 1970s and early 80s as well as representing his country in the Davis Cup. However, he has been barred from SW19 since 2023, fellow former British tennis star Roger Taylor has revealed. ‌ Taylor made the claim in his recently-released book, The Man Who Saved Wimbledon, per the Daily Mail's Eden Confidential column. Now 70, Mottram was seen as a controversial figure. ‌ He once wrote a letter in support of then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher during her battles with the trade unions in the 80s, even signing it on behalf of the Davis Cup team, which left the tennis authorities fuming. Additionally, he faced allegations of racism due to his backing of Enoch Powell, a far-right politician notorious for his 'Rivers of Blood' speech about mass immigration in the late-60s. Taylor, 83, wrote: "His antics and beliefs saw him frozen out by the establishment. He never became a permanent member of the All England Club which, for player with his record, would usually be guaranteed. In 2023, following further misdemeanours, he was banned from the place altogether." Article continues below Mottram is said to be no longer welcome at SW19 (Image:) When approached for comment, a Wimbledon spokesperson said: "I'm afraid we don't comment on our membership." Mottram has been left feeling despondent by his expulsion, although Taylor attributed the ban primarily to his own conduct. He wrote: "Buster spent more time there than just about anyone else and it's been very sad to watch his decline and exclusion, even if much of it has been down to his own failings." ‌ In his heyday, Mottram soared to 15th in the world rankings in 1978 and 1983, with his most notable Wimbledon achievement being reaching the fourth round in 1982. He made it to the fourth round at both the French Open and the US Open as well. He was also a member of the British Davis Cup team that was runner-up to the United States in 1978. A young Mottram in action (Image: Getty ) ‌ Mottram abruptly hung up his racket in 1983, blaming the continuous "hassle" of participating in year-round tournaments. He later ventured into right-wing politics but found himself ejected from UKIP for fraternising with the British National Party (BNP) and its leader Nick Griffin. After attempting to broker a pact between UKIP and the BNP, Mottram was ejected from the party, then under Nigel Farage's leadership. Farage said at the time: "There are no circumstances, no possible situations, in which we would even consider doing any type of deal with the BNP whatsoever. "I'm simply amazed that the BNP thought we would even consider such a thing, given that we are a non-racist, non-sectarian party." Article continues below Griffin had entertained hopes of forming an agreement to prevent BNP and UKIP candidates from competing against one another in the forthcoming European elections.

Celtic branded 'nobodies outside of Glasgow' as Rangers fans toot European horn in fiery Hotline

The Old Firm tit-for-tat is in full swing this week. One caller lobbed a grenade into the Hotline by claiming that Celtic have been humiliated in Europe while Rangers have flown the flag for Scotland. That's sparked an explosive reaction on these pages - much to the amusement of the regular who lit the fuse. George Wilson, West Sussex sniggered: "I'm laughing now at the many hysterical reactions to my comments about Celtic in Europe, which was merely stating the truth and fact that Celtic are nobodies in Europe and in fact outside Scotland. "Most Rangers fans like myself will own up to our shortcomings in Scotland over the last few years and overall we are way short of where we want and need to be. "Celtic supporters on the other hand seem to think they are some sort of international super club when in fact results and history show they are nobodies outside the Glasgow gold fish bowl." Alan Flett backed up his fellow Bluenose: "The Celtic fans having a pop at George Wilson are missing the point. OK, we all know that you are playing in the CL, but you're not competing. "You only made it to the KO stages last season because the new format made it almost impossible not to. You lose every time you come up against a team of any substance, and you haven't won a two-legged tie for over 20 years. "At least Rangers can compete at EL level, and we are beating teams who are better than some of the CL sides who are beating Celtic. "Yes, both Man Utd and Spurs are poor, but surely no fair-minded football fan would claim that they are worse than Young Boys and Bratislava." Speaking tongue-in-cheek, Gary Stevenson quipped: "It's almost impossible to compare the recent achievements of both Rangers and Celtic in Europe. "Playing in different competitions makes it hard to assess and only if they had played against the same opposition could you compare. Oh, hold on a minute... Borussia Dortmund!" Back in the real world, Joe Rothwell's imminent arrival at Ibrox has gone down well with Robert Livingstone: "Finally, a good signing. Rothwell certainly ticks all the boxes. A big 6-footer who has loads of English league experience and should tighten a shaky defence in the place of Propper. Russell Martin looks to have got this one right, but still more good ones needed to mount a proper challenge." Across the city, Celtic remain in the market for a striker but Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton said: "I'm hoping I'm proved wrong, but I'm expecting Brendan Rodgers to bring in David Strelec for the £9million that his club are looking for. "We've already got our fingers burned with paying a similar amount for Idah, who the jury is still out with the majority of Celtic fans. For me, it's too risky and the answer is bringing in Bojan Miovski for a lesser fee and a striker who knows our league inside out." Jimmy Murray wrote: "Greg Taylor was what you'd expect in a Celtic player. A brilliant professional who put in a full 90-minute shift every time he pulled on the jersey. I for one am absolutely gutted he has gone and wish the best of luck to him." Former Rangers owner David Murray has made headlines with his new autobiography and Donald Dundas, Uddingston said: "As a lifelong Rangers fan, I am mortified by some of the snippets in my favourite newspaper from David Murray's book. Duped?! Completed due diligence?! "I'm sorry David, as much as I loved your time and success at the helm, I'm afraid you're letting yourself down with these revelations. I can see the book being discounted to a £1 at the he usual outlets by Xmas." Finally, the Club World Cup hasn't captured anyone's imagination. Sean McGarvey, Miami, Florida added: "Unlike many, I've followed it and all I can say is good luck with the World Cup. "Adverts in games, water breaks, weather delays etc. If I wanted to watch a four-hour game of football, I'd watch American football. If this is what we have to look forward to seeing in the future, then the baw's in the slates. "Even after Qatar, I think this might be the worst idea….until Saudis trump it. Think I might, for the first time in my life, sit this one out. I don't even recognise it."
