Action SA slams Emfuleni's service delivery failures
ActionSA in Sedibeng said that the recently cleaning campaign partnership between the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in South Africa (COGTA) in Gauteng and the ELM indicates that the municipality is not capable of service delivery.
Dubbed Operation Phakama Vaal, it was supported by the Gauteng provincial government, and its main focus is to bring back service delivery and confidence in the community. The Gauteng provincial government said that the operation also aimed, among others, to encourage communities to keep the environment clean.
The Gauteng provincial government said that the initiative followed the recent Provincial Integrated Service Delivery Programme visit that seeks to address service delivery issues, including crime, infrastructure maintenance, and waste management, amongst other things. The operation focused on Sebokeng, Vanderbijlpark, Evaton, and Vereeniging, mainly tackling illegal dumping, promoting recycling, and restoring neglected public space.
Bongani Dhlamini, ActionSA's Regional Chair, said, 'This is a clear indication that Emfuleni on its own is no longer capable of handling service delivery for the residents of Emfuleni, thus the (our) call for placing Emfuleni under administration and we will take it up with the Gauteng Provincial Legislature,' he said.
Meanwhile, the party launched branches for Wards 6 and 18 in preparation for the upcoming 2026 local government elections.

The ANC wants to remove highly regarded Tshwane city manager Johann Mettler, three years after his appointment. Gauteng MEC for Local Government Jacob Mamabolo has weighed in with a letter about Mettler's appointment, showing that threats by the city's governing coalition to get rid of Mettler are becoming more serious. The three issues now raised by the provincial leader – who has oversight powers over the metro – were not flagged at the time of the appointment. Mettler is regarded as one of South Africa's most qualified and technocratic city managers: he has an LLM from Lund University in Sweden, an LLB and BProc from the University of the Western Cape, and has worked in local government since 1995. He has served as an administrator brought in to stabilise dysfunctional municipalities and was city manager of the Drakenstein and Nelson Mandela Bay councils. 'Whatever legal pretext the ANC coalition devises, the point is that the party would prefer one of their own deployed cadres – not an independent professional – in the job of municipal manager,' said Cilliers Brink, the DA Tshwane caucus leader and former mayor. He said Mettler had come under attack in council several times. 'The most notable of these attacks happened when it became clear that the city would not drop the case against the Rooiwaal Five, city officials implicated in the irregular tender award to a consortium of ANC funder Edwin Sodi.' Sodi won the tender for repairs to the Rooiwaal Waste-Water Treatment Plant, which were botched and caused severe downstream water contamination, most notably affecting the Hammanskraal community. Brink has written to Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya of ActionSA about the growing attacks on the city manager. 'ActionSA's position is clear and consistent: we will not support the removal of any senior manager unless there is a clear, lawful and governance-based reason for doing so. [We] will not compromise the integrity of governance in Tshwane for the sake of political expediency. We remain committed to a principled, lawful and stable administration that serves the best interests of residents,' the party said. Mamabolo has now raised concerns – three years after the fact – about the interview panel for Mettler's appointment and his qualifications under the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA). Brink, who was mayor at the time of Mettler's appointment, said the panel that made the appointment complied with regulations for senior managers. Mettler had also completed the MFMA qualifications he needed. '…The legal implications of asking council to reverse an appointment at this stage remain uncertain and require careful consideration,' ActionSA said. The ANC holds 75 of 214 seats in the Tshwane council and governs with support from the EFF (23) and ActionSA (19), along with smaller parties. The DA has 69 seats. The attempt to axe Mettler could destabilise governance in South Africa's capital.

Senzo Mchunu refutes KZN top cop Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's claims
The Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu says he will never allow his integrity, that of the Ministry or the South African Police Service (SAPS) at large to be undermined by insinuations made without evidence or due processes from anyone. This comes after an explosive media briefing addressed by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Sunday, 6 July. Earlier on Sunday, The South African reported that during the media briefing on Sunday, Mkhwanazi revealed that the political killings task team has uncovered a syndicate including senior politicians, senior police officials, metro police, officials in correctional services, prosecutors, and other influential businesspeople that is controlled by a drug cartel in Gauteng and KZN. Mkhwanazi also accused the minister of police of political interference in investigations, as he reportedly ordered the task team to be disbanded and the withdrawal of 120 case dockets. In response to Mkhwanazi's allegations, ministry of police spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said they will be reviewing the provincial commissioner's statements and consider appropriate action. Mogotsi said all the statements made by Mkhwanazi in public require an urgent, thorough and transparent investigation, on a proper platform. 'The Minister of Police remains committed to upholding the rule of law, ensuring accountability within the SAPS, and serving the people of South Africa with integrity,' she said. In response to Mkhwanazi's allegations, various political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA, have written to the Speaker of Parliament to request an urgent debate. EFF calls for Senzo Mchunu's head over Mkhwanazi's allegations
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA have called for the immediate suspension of the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu following KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's startling allegations. Mkhwanazi held an explosive media briefing on Sunday morning, 6 July, about police operations in KwaZulu-Natal and the disbandment of the political killings task team, which was formed in May 2018. In April, Mkhwanazi told EWN that Mchunu was likely influenced in writing a letter to the national commissioner in December 2024, requesting that the KZN political killings task team be disbanded. 'This was confirmed not so long ago by NPA's National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, who highlighted the infiltration of the prosecuting authority, which made it impossible to prosecute cases effectively.
