Royals ace Cole Ragans to undergo testing on groin after leaving start vs Rockies with tightness
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals ace Cole Ragans will undergo testing on his left groin after the All-Star left-hander was forced to leave Thursday's start against the Colorado Rockies after just three innings and 62 pitches.
Ragans had allowed four runs on three hits — two of them homers — and two walks before Angel Zerpa replaced him for the fourth inning of a 7-3 victory over the Rockies. Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said Ragans had trouble getting loose before the game and his groin began to bother him as the innings went on.
'As he was sitting there between innings, between the third and fourth, it tightened up on him,' said Quatraro, who thinks some of Ragans' command problems during the opening game of a doubleheader were related to the groin issue.
'I did not talk to him yet, but I would assume, you know, if he's not comfortable pushing off, you're seeing him cut some stuff off, which makes sense, based on most of those misses,' Quatraro said. 'Just probably wasn't getting through it.'
Ragans went 11-9 with a 3.14 ERA and led the league in strikeouts per nine innings during a breakout season last year. He is 1-1 with a 4.40 ERA in six starts this season, including a dismal outing last week against the Tigers.
'Cole was not 100 percent," Royals catcher Salvador Perez said Thursday. 'I could tell from the bullpen he was not right.'
The Royals bullpen picked Ragans up, though, tossing six scoreless innings in relief. Zerpa and Steven Cruz tossed two apiece, Lucas Erceg cruised through the eighth and Carlos Estevez handled the ninth to earn his sixth save.
In other injury news, Quatraro said right-hander Alec Marsh would begin a new throwing progression Friday after he was shut down a few weeks ago with more soreness in his right shoulder. The Royals hope to have him back sometime in June.
Speedy outfielder Dairon Blanco also is on the mend after dealing with a right Achilles injury. He went through a full workout on Tuesday, and Quatraro said it's possible that Blanco could be headed on a rehab assignment soon.
'That was a huge step forward. He had a ton of volume out there,' Quatraro said. 'We've got to get through this weekend, but if everything goes smoothly, we'll get him out sometime next week.'

Police on high alert in France for PSG vs. Chelsea Club World Cup final in US
PARIS (AP) — Tens of thousands of police officers will be deployed in France on Sunday night as Paris Saint-Germain takes on Chelsea in the Club World Cup final thousands of miles away in the United States. French officials have warned that no fan misbehavior will be tolerated after violence in the country marred celebrations of PSG winning its first Champions League trophy in Germany. 'No gatherings will be tolerated on the Champs-Elysées,' Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told RMC media. 'A total of 11,500 police and gendarmes will be mobilized in Paris on Sunday, and 53,000 throughout France.' French police are faced with a double security challenge, with PSG's match at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey followed on July 14 by France's Bastille Day celebrations. 'Every year, there are troublemakers who want to have fun with violence, who break things, who want to loot. We're going to have to provide security for a huge number of events: fireworks displays, parties,' Retailleau said. Celebrations of PSG's first Champions League title were largely peaceful but degenerated into violence in some areas. A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a PSG street party after the final, the national police service said. Kudermetova and Mertens win women's doubles final at Wimbledon
LONDON (AP) — Veronika Kudermetova secured her first Grand Slam title by teaming up with Elise Mertens to win the women's doubles final at Wimbledon on Sunday, rallying to beat Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Centre Court. Kudermetova and Mertens were on opposite sides in the final in 2021 but were playing at Wimbledon together for the first time this year. They trailed 4-2 in the third set but won the last four games to seal the comeback. It is Mertens' fifth Grand Slam doubles title, and second at Wimbledon. In 2021, she teamed up with Hsieh to win a marathon final where they saved two match points against Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina. 'I lost that final and it was so painful,' Kudermetova said. 'Today I said to myself, I really want it. And it's mine now.' Hsieh has won the Wimbledon doubles title four times with three different partners.
