Disney World just announced a new attraction that will make fans feel like kids again

USA Today4 days ago
If you visited Disney's Hollywood Studios back in its Disney MGM Studios days, you may remember The Magic of Disney Animation.
The attraction opened with the park in 1989 and invited guests to witness Disney's animation process firsthand, peering into a working studio, where films like 'Lilo & Stitch' came to life.
It wasn't quite the same after Disney shuttered its Florida-based animation operations in the early 2000s, but the attraction evolved and continued to celebrate Disney Animation until 2015, when it was closed and replaced by Star Wars Launch Bay.
Now a decade later, Disney has announced a new Magic of Disney Animation is in the works for a new generation of guests. Here's what fans should know.
When is The Magic of Disney Animation opening?
The new Magic of Disney Animation will open at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2026.
Disney hasn't shared an exact date.
Where will The Magic of Disney Animation be located?
The attraction will be located in Animation Courtyard, which will be reimagined as The Walt Disney Studios.
It will be where Star Wars Launch Bay is now.
The Sorcerer's Hat is coming back
The Star Wars Launch Bay building will be transformed to look like the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, California, where Walt Disney Animation Studios is based. Like that building, it will be topped with a huge Sorcerer's Hat.
For years, a massive Sorcerer Mickey Hat served as the symbol of Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney-MGM Studios, and was a popular photo backdrop for guests.
This one won't be the same, but the nostalgia factor is notable for fans who've said goodbye to longtime staples like Muppet*Vision 3D, Tom Sawyer Island, and parts of DinoLand U.S.A this year. Many fans have already expressed their excitement on social media.
What to expect from The Magic of Disney Animation
"Our story in this newly reimagined space begins as the animators have temporarily stepped away... but the building is still buzzing with activity as the characters have come to life and they're ready to play!' Disney shared on its official Disney Parks Blog.
It's unclear how the experience will unfold, but Disney says the characters will be part of 'playful and interactive moments,' like in the Emmy-winning short film 'Once Upon a Studio' created for Disney's 100th anniversary.
There will also be a short film, drawing lessons (which the previous Magic of Disney Animation also offered), and for young guests, a Drawn to Wonderland playground inspired by Disney Legend Mary Blair's concept art for 'Alice in Wonderland.'
What else is coming?
The new Walt Disney Studios space will host a new Disney Jr. show, character greetings and trees offering shade to guests.
'And make sure to look around, too,' Disney's blog post said. 'You never know who you might see playing in the branches, soaking up the sun or digging in the grass.'
What's closing at Disney's Hollywood Studios?
Star Wars Launch Bay and the live show Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will permanently close this September. Their last day of operation will be Sept. 24.
The recently reimagined Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure will remain.

10 best Hulu original movies to watch this summer

Hulu's status over the course of the past decade has changed several times. The streaming service, which is now owned by Disney, still has original movie releases, but it has never competed for Oscars in quite the way that a service like Netflix does. As a result, Hulu original movies can be a little bit of everything, although many of them are the kind of mid-budget movies that have been disappearing from theaters. While all of them are definitely not good, we've pulled together a list of 10 excellent ones that are worth watching this summer. Palm Springs (2020) One of the great pandemic watches of 2020 was Palm Springs, a Groundhog Day-style story that followed two people attending a wedding who find themselves trapped living the same day over and over again. Recommended Videos While time loop stories are nothing new, Palm Springs manages to inject some fresh life into the genre by trapping two people in this purgatory together as they slowly fall in love and deal with personal demons that predate the time they've shared together. Anchored by great performances from Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, Palm Springs is still just as good today. You can watch Palm Springs on Hulu. Happiest Season (2020) A holiday romcom with some real bite, Happiest Season tells the story of two women in a committed relationship who visit one of their families for the holidays. When her partner learns that she is not out to her family, she's forced to pretend to be her friend through a deeply awkward weekend that leaves her questioning their entire relationship. Happiest Season is a fairly light comedy about bigotry, but it works because of Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis's committed central performances and because it's got some festive holiday zest to it. You can watch Happiest Season on Hulu. Summer of Soul (2021) One of the great documentaries of the past decade, Summer of Soul tells the story of the Harlem Cultural Festival, a music festival that did not receive the attention of Woodstock but occurred during the same summer. Thanks to archival footage of many of the performers, as well as contemporary interviews with experts and some of the performers themselves, the film is deeply emotional and a reminder of the wealth of Black history that often goes unexplored in mainstream culture. You can watch Summer of Soul on Hulu. Fresh (2022) Fresh is silly, to be sure, but it knows what it is and is pretty effective at creating a tense, thrilling atmosphere. The movie follows a young woman who is struggling to find any datable men until she comes across a charming man who, it turns out, wants to slowly carve her up and eat her. Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones are both excellent and utterly committed here, and the movie also has some pretty heavy-handed things to say about misogyny and what men really value in the women around them. You can watch Fresh on Hulu. Prey (2022) This prequel to the original Predator executed what everyone had basically always wanted from this franchise. It tells the story of a Native American girl living in the 18th century who stumbles upon a predator and has to figure out how to defeat it. Amber Midthunder delivers a hugely compelling central performance. In director Dan Trachtenberg's hands, Prey becomes a movie much more about one woman's survival and self-actualization than it is about the larger mythology of this universe, and it's all the better for it. You can watch Prey on Hulu. Rye Lane (2023) A hugely colorful and charming romantic comedy, Rye Lane is told over the course of a single day and follows two single people who meet in London in the wake of bad breakups. As they slowly form a connection, they have to work through their baggage and figure out whether they're really interested in pursuing a serious relationship. Filled with actual jokes and riveting banter, Rye Lane would be nothing without the natural chemistry between its stars, David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah. You can watch Rye Lane on Hulu. No One Will Save You (2023) A sci-fi movie with a high-minded premise, No One Will Save You is an almost entirely wordless film that follows a young woman who lives alone as she begins to suspect that aliens are invading her home. As she works to battle them off, we learn more about how she came to be so isolated. Anchored by the remarkable Kaitlyn Dever, who conveys so much without saying a word, No One Will Save You is more than just its interesting premise. It's a genuinely exciting sci-fi movie that, thankfully, demands that you actually look at the screen while you watch it. You can watch No One Will Save You on Hulu. Predator: Killer of Killers (2025) A sort of pseudo-sequel to Prey, but animated this time, Predator: Killer of Killers is an anthology story that follows three different characters from Earth who all took on predators over the course of history. A Viking, a samurai, and a World War II fighter pilot all get their turns taking on the unkillable hunters. After they emerge victorious, the warriors are taken to the Predator homeworld, where they are forced to compete to see who is the ultimate killer of killers. Featuring stylish animation, innovative action sequences, and a breakneck pace, Predator: Killer of Killers is one of the best entries in the franchise. You can watch Predator: Killer of Killers on Hulu. Minding the Gap (2018) One of the best documentaries on Hulu, Minding the Gap follows the story of three friends who bond over skateboarding as they grow and change over the course of years. In that time, we come to appreciate the economic hardships facing each of them and the way skateboarding becomes less of an escape as the realities of their lives start to close in around them. Minding the Gap features some impressive skateboarding footage, but what really makes the movie stick are all the moments where you see someone trying to escape from the circumstances they were born into, with mixed results. You can watch Minding the Gap on Hulu. Fire Island (2022) A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice, Fire Island offers a remarkable and humorous glimpse into the culture of gay travelers enjoying a summer vacation on the island. The film is vibrant and captures the complexity of gay culture. The romance at the movie's center is also deeply charming, anchored by writer and star Joel Kim Booster, who delivers a star-making turn at the center of this movie. Rarely has a retelling of Jane Austen felt as vibrant and modern as it does here. You can watch Fire Island on Hulu.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps' rockets to $118 million

Disney's 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' stormed the domestic box office, topping superhero competitor 'Superman' to finish No. 1 with $118 million. The reboot was a major comeback for the series, falling within range of analysts' expectations but short of a hopeful $130 million. 'Fantastic Four' is also the best-performing weekend for a Marvel film this year, easily surpassing 'Captain America: Brave New World' in February ($88.5 million) and 'Thunderbolts' in May ($74.3 million). 'This new phase for Marvel is truly important for the brand,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, adding that it 'doubles down on the 'Thunderbolts' success and is showing that audiences love going to superhero movies in the movie theater.' Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, called 'Fantastic Four' a 'zero-homework-required' release, because it stands separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's established storylines. 'That's exactly where their franchise needs to be right now, as they not only try to keep those die-hard fans but bring back some of the more casual watchers,' said Robbins. While some industry experts have said moviegoers may be experiencing 'superhero fatigue,' Daniel Loria, editorial director at BoxOffice Pro, said Marvel may be slowed by 'franchise fatigue.' Marvel Studios has released 37 movies since 'Iron Man' in 2008, with four 'Avengers' movies between 2012 and 2019 having combined to gross about $10 billion when adjusted for inflation. Perhaps adding to the Marvel fatigue was Disney releasing Marvel Cinematic Universe television series on its streaming service, which complicated the franchise, Dergarabedian said. It hasn't helped matters that since the pandemic, Marvel movies have failed to get off to a hot start, with 2024's 'Deadpool & Wolverine' ($211 million) and 2021's 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' ($260 million) being exceptions. 'So much of (the franchise) is readily available at home,' Loria said. 'I don't think 'Fantastic Four' plays into any of that. It's a fresh, new experience, and I think audiences are responding to that.' 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' should help lift the franchise after the box office disappointment of 20th Century Fox's 2015 'Fantastic Four,' which grossed just $76.3 million domestically during its entire run, adjusted for inflation. Finishing No. 2 at the domestic weekend box office was Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Superman,' which grossed nearly $25 million. 'Superman,' part of the revamped DC movie universe, has so far grossed $289.5 million since opening on July 11. Dergarabedian said that the success of this month's two superhero films shows that 'if that genre or category of film were to disappear, it'd be devastating for the industry.' Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN. Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth' came in third at the domestic box office, having grossed $13 million in its fourth week in theaters. It's grossed $301.51 million domestically so far. Robbins noted that there haven't been major examples of a DC and Marvel movie playing in theaters at the same time. He added that casual comic book fans who may normally pick one movie to see could make an exception to see both films in theaters. Loria cited a diverse slate of movies for continued moviegoing momentum. Aside from 'Superman' and 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' Paramount Pictures' comedy 'The Naked Gun,' which opens Friday, will open to offer 'a fresh, new genre.' This month's movie slate has lifted the box office 12.3% year-to-date compared to the same time last year, according to Comscore data. And the box office could still reach $4 billion this summer, Dergarabedian said, which would mark the second post-pandemic summer box office to reach that level. ''The Fantastic Four: First Steps' is going to fuel a very strong month of August. So what a great home stretch for the industry,' he said.

WWE legend expresses regret he was unable to speak to Hulk Hogan before his death

WWE Hall of Famer known as Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake expressed some regret that he had been unable to see Hulk Hogan before he passed away at the age of 71. Beefcake, whose real name is Ed Leslie, spoke to TMZ Sports on Saturday about his longtime friendship with Hogan. He said he had heard whispers that "The Hulkster" had not been doing so well, and he had thought about going to Hogan's Clearwater, Florida, home to visit him. "I was going to try to go to his house a couple of days ago. My wife said, 'You should just go over there.' And I was thinking, 'Oh, my God,' but if I go to the house and they say, 'No, you can't come in,' it would have crushed me. So I didn't, and now I wish maybe that I had tried to get in and tried to get to see him before he passed," he said. Beefcake was asked what he would have told Hogan if he had had one more chance to talk to him. "I love you brother, and we were truly friends to the end," he said. Beefcake said Hogan's friendship meant everything to him and that he had helped him break into the pro wrestling business. He recalled the great lengths that Hogan had gone to, to be there for him in his own time of need. Beefcake had been in a parasailing accident in July 1990, and Hogan had made the trip to see him. "I was in a horrible accident and not expected to live. And he left his family in California. His wife was about to have a baby, his son Nick, to fly to Florida to be there, because the doctor said they didn't think I was going to make it. And he flew there to be there for me. "And when they brought me out of a drug-induced coma, and he said to me, 'Don't even think about it. Brutus, you're going to live.' And I did. And he was there for me at the moment I needed the most." Beefcake and Hogan teamed together at the very early stages of their careers. They were known as The Boulder Brothers at the time. He was known as Brutus Beefcake when he first got started in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). The two also were in the main event match for World Championship Wrestling's (WCW) Starrcade in 1994. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019. Hogan died at a hospital on Thursday, an hour after he had had a cardiac event at his home.
