Tata Steel begins Port Talbot EAF project as UK backs £500-mn investment

Port Talbot in South Wales – Tata Steel's primary steelmaking site in the UK – is set for a new beginning as the company breaks ground on an electric arc furnace (EAF), signalling a shift towards low-carbon steel production.
To mark this milestone for Tata Steel and British steelmaking, Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran will be joined by UK government ministers at a groundbreaking event scheduled for later on Monday.
Chandrasekaran will be flanked by Tata Steel Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director T V Narendran, and Tata Steel UK Chief Executive Officer Rajesh Nair, as they officially break the ground with spades, launching the construction of the UK's largest low-carbon steelmaking facility and marking a shift away from traditional blast furnaces.
Government support and job impact
The development is part of a £1.25-billion transformation towards low-carbon steelmaking, supported by a £500-million investment from the UK government.
The transition secures 5,000 jobs across Tata Steel UK, even as the closure of heavy-end assets is expected to impact 2,500 positions.
Leadership emphasises sustainability and partnership
In a statement ahead of the ceremony, Chandrasekaran said: 'This is an important day for Tata Group, Tata Steel and for the UK. Today's groundbreaking marks not just the beginning of a new electric arc furnace, but a new era for sustainable manufacturing in Britain.'
'At Port Talbot, we are building the foundations of a cleaner, greener future, supporting jobs, driving innovation, and demonstrating our commitment to responsible industry leadership. This project is also part of Tata Group's wider investment in the UK, across steel, automotive, and technology among others, which reflects our deep and enduring partnership with this country,' he added.
UK government hails strategic shift in steelmaking
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said, 'This is our Industrial Strategy in action and is great news for Welsh steelmaking, backing this crucial Welsh industry, which will give certainty to local communities and thousands of local jobs for years to come.'
'This government is committed to a bright future for our steel industry, which is why we provided £500 million of funding to make this project possible,' he added.
Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said: 'The UK government acted decisively to ensure that steelmaking in Port Talbot will continue for generations to come, backing Tata Steel with £500 million to secure its future in the town, along with £80 million to support workers and the wider community.'
'Our Steel Strategy will also deliver £2.5 billion of investment to rebuild the UK industry, maintain jobs and drive growth,' Stevens added.
First Minister Eluned Morgan said: 'The start of the construction phase is good news for Port Talbot and neighbouring communities, and I'm especially pleased that Tata has committed to employing local contractors and local workers where it can.'
Mixed reactions as union calls day 'bittersweet'
Steelworkers' union Community described the development as a 'bittersweet' day. In a statement, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said: 'This bittersweet day is a consequence of the devastating closure of the blast furnaces, but importantly, a future for Port Talbot steelmaking is being secured. The workforce needs the electric arc furnace project to be both a success and a turning point, and we look forward to playing our part to get the new furnace up and running.'
Broader decarbonisation strategy and supply chain
As part of Tata Steel UK's broader decarbonisation strategy, the project will also include new ladle metallurgy facilities, infrastructure upgrades, and collaborations with technology providers such as Tenova, ABB, and Clecim.
The construction is being led by main contractor Robert McAlpine, supported by a strong regional supply chain that includes Darlow Lloyd & Sons, Mii, Skelton Thomas, Wernick Buildings, Andrew Scott Ltd, and Systems Group, the company said.

Blue Origin , the aerospace company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos , is preparing for its next milestone in commercial spaceflight. On August 3, 2025, the NS-34 mission will carry six civilians on a suborbital journey aboard the reusable New Shepard rocket. Among the crew is Arvi Singh Bahal , an Indian-origin investor and entrepreneur now based in the US, who will join five other international space tourists. The 11-minute flight will provide breathtaking views of Earth from more than 60 miles above sea level and several minutes of weightlessness, continuing Blue Origin's efforts to make space accessible to non-professional astronauts. Blue Origin's NS-34 includes Indian-origin Arvi Singh Bahal and crypto tycoon Justin Sun The NS-34 mission features a hand-picked crew representing a broad spectrum of nationalities and professions—from cryptocurrency and finance to science, journalism, and education. Arvi Singh Bahal: Born in India and now a US citizen, Bahal is a real estate investor and tech enthusiast who has funded several educational initiatives and space research projects. Known for promoting STEM education among underserved communities. Justin Sun: A prominent Chinese entrepreneur and crypto billionaire, Sun founded TRON, a blockchain-based decentralized platform. He also acquired BitTorrent in 2018 and has been vocal about integrating blockchain technology with space innovation. Sun previously secured a seat on a space mission with SpaceX but is now realizing his orbital dream with Blue Origin. Gokhan Erdem : Hailing from Turkey, Erdem is the CEO of a major logistics and infrastructure company. He has invested in renewable energy and AI applications in construction. His participation highlights the growing interest from industrial leaders in experiencing space firsthand and advocating for sustainable technological progress. Deborah Martorell : A celebrated meteorologist and science communicator from Puerto Rico, Martorell has spent decades educating the public about climate change, weather systems, and planetary science. Her role on NS-34 marks a symbolic journey for Caribbean representation in space and reflects the mission's emphasis on public engagement with science. Lionel Pitchford : A British-born philanthropist and former language teacher, Pitchford has lived in Spain for over 20 years. Known for his humanitarian work with refugees and his advocacy for global education, Lionel's selection aligns with Blue Origin's inclusion of socially impactful figures in its passenger lists. James 'J.D.' Russell : An American venture capitalist and aerospace startup founder, Russell launched Alpha Funds and later Alpha Aerospace, a company working on autonomous drone systems and satellite servicing tech. He brings technical insight to the journey and symbolizes the next wave of space-focused entrepreneurs. Together, this diverse group reflects a new era of spaceflight where civilian explorers from varied sectors and continents share the frontier. Blue Origin New Shepard rocket's launch date, location, and precise timing for Blue Origin's suborbital spaceflight The NS-34 launch is scheduled for Sunday, August 3, 2025, with liftoff expected at 7:30 a.m. Central Time (8:30 a.m. Eastern Time), that is 6:00 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST) on the same day. The flight will launch from Launch Site One, Blue Origin's private spaceport in West Texas, located about 140 miles east of El Paso and near the US–Mexico border. The secluded desert location is ideal for vertical launches and recoveries, and it has been the site for all previous New Shepard missions. Weather permitting, the countdown will proceed as planned, with final checks on vehicle systems and crew safety protocols completed in the hours leading up to liftoff. What the crew will experience during their 11-minute journey to the edge of space The six-member crew aboard New Shepard will embark on an unforgettable suborbital adventure that compresses the thrill and awe of space travel into just over 11 action-packed minutes. While brief, the mission is carefully designed to offer a complete spaceflight experience—from liftoff and microgravity to atmospheric re-entry and soft landing. After the countdown reaches zero, the New Shepard rocket will blast off vertically from Launch Site One, rapidly ascending into the sky and accelerating to more than three times the speed of sound (over 2,000 mph). Within two to three minutes, the spacecraft will have pierced through the lower atmosphere, its engines roaring beneath the passengers' feet as it climbs toward the Kármán line, located at an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles)—the internationally recognized boundary of space. Around this point, the booster stage will separate from the crew capsule. From here, the experience transforms from a rocket ride to pure serenity as the capsule coasts through the vacuum of space in a silent arc. Inside, gravity essentially disappears. As the capsule floats above Earth's atmosphere, the passengers will unstrap from their seats and float weightlessly, experiencing microgravity for approximately 3 to 4 minutes. This is the moment most space tourists describe as life-changing—when they drift freely within the cabin, twist midair, and gaze through the capsule's massive panoramic windows that provide breathtaking, wide-angle views of Earth's curved horizon, the deep blackness of space, and the sun shining unfiltered by the atmosphere. The interior of New Shepard's capsule is designed for comfort and visibility. It features: Six individual reclining seats, each with its own communication and safety system The largest windows flown in space, accounting for one-third of the capsule's surface area Cushioned walls and handholds to make floating safer and more enjoyable Cameras to capture every second of the experience from multiple angles After this brief but powerful encounter with space, the capsule will begin its fall back to Earth, entering the upper atmosphere at subsonic speeds. This portion of the flight is often referred to as a "stable freefall," meaning the capsule falls in a controlled orientation without tumbling. At around 5,000 feet, three large parachutes will deploy, dramatically slowing the capsule's descent. Just seconds before touchdown, retro-thrusters will fire to cushion the final impact, allowing for a gentle, upright landing on the desert floor of West Texas. Rescue crews and Blue Origin staff will be waiting nearby, ready to recover the capsule, assist the passengers, and celebrate their return. The entire journey—from ignition to touchdown—will take about 11 minutes, but for the six space travelers aboard, it will be an experience that lingers for a lifetime. This immersive trip not only gives passengers their first view of Earth from space but also instills a deeper appreciation for the fragility and beauty of our planet—an experience often referred to as the 'Overview Effect' by astronauts who have traveled before them. Where and how to watch the Blue Origin NS-34 mission live Blue Origin will livestream the full NS-34 mission on its official website, beginning approximately 30 minutes before liftoff. The broadcast will include live views of the launch pad, onboard footage from inside the capsule, and mission commentary. Space enthusiasts, students, and curious viewers worldwide can tune in to witness this next step in civilian space exploration. Previous Blue Origin launches have attracted millions of live viewers, and the NS-34 event is expected to do the same. Blue Origin's expanding space program and vision beyond Earth The NS-34 mission continues Blue Origin's ambitious journey in democratizing access to space. Since Jeff Bezos' own flight aboard New Shepard in July 2021, the company has flown over 70 passengers on 13 crewed flights. It has made spaceflight possible for scientists, educators, celebrities, and private citizens alike. Beyond New Shepard, Blue Origin is developing New Glenn, a much larger, orbital-class rocket aimed at competing with SpaceX's Starship. The 320-foot-tall vehicle completed its first test launch in January 2025 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and may fly again later this year. New Glenn is designed to support both NASA missions and commercial satellite deployments. As Blue Origin moves closer to routine space access, missions like NS-34 prove that the future of spaceflight lies not just in orbit, but in opening the experience to dreamers and doers from all corners of the Earth.

Dominance of Amazon and Microsoft in cloud harming competition, UK says

The dominant position of Amazon and Microsoft in cloud computing is harming competition, with their impact exacerbated by technical and commercial barriers to switching, an inquiry group from Britain's antitrust regulator said. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) group said on Thursday the regulator should investigate whether to designate the two with strategic market status (SMS) in cloud services, which would give it new powers to intervene. It noted, however, that the CMA has said it will not consider new SMS investigations, which are conducted by its Digital Markets Unit (DMU), until early next year. Microsoft was singled out in its final report for licensing practices that the panel said adversely impacted Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google. The group said in January that Microsoft was using its dominance in enterprise software, such as Windows Server and Microsoft 365, to limit competition by charging licensing fees when its services were used on rival platforms. Microsoft and AWS have 30-40% market shares in cloud services such as processing, storage and networking, it said. Google is the third main provider, but it has a smaller share of 5-10%. "Measures aimed at Microsoft and AWS would address market-wide concerns," the CMA group said. The cloud computing industry has been scrutinised by regulators on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, Microsoft clinched a 20-million-euro deal last year to settle a complaint about its licensing practices, averting an antitrust investigation and potential hefty fine. The company said the CMA group's report "misses the mark again, ignoring that the cloud market has never been so dynamic and competitive, with record investment, and rapid, AI-driven changes". "Its recommendations fail to cover Google, one of the fastest-growing cloud market participants," a spokesperson said. Amazon said "clear evidence of robust competition" had been disregarded. "The action proposed by the Inquiry Group is unwarranted and undermines the substantial investment and innovation that have already benefited hundreds of thousands of UK businesses," a spokesperson said. But it noted the group had recognised that action needed to be taken over Microsoft's licensing practices. Google said the conclusive finding that restrictive licensing harmed customers and competition was a "watershed moment". "Swift action from the DMU is essential to ensure British businesses pay a fair price and to unleash choice, innovation and economic growth in the UK," said Chris Lindsay, Google Cloud's vice president for customer engineering EMEA. The Open Cloud Coalition and the Coalition for Fair Software Licensing said the CMA should take action quickly. "Given the alarming anticompetitive behaviour it has identified, the current plan to start this process in early 2026 is nowhere near sufficient," said Nicky Stewart, senior advisor to the Open Cloud Coalition.

It's not just Apple that's upbeat on India. A dozen global chiefs of large companies such as Coca-Cola, Unilever , Reckitt Benckiser, PepsiCo, Nestle, Mondelez, Whirlpool, LG, Domino's, AO Smith and FedEx have renewed their bet on the country after a challenging phase. The CEOs were speaking on earnings calls for the last said new Apple retail stores—four of them—will open in India later this year, adding that most of the iPhones sold in the US were assembled in India in the last quarter amid uncertainty fuelled by US President Donald Trump's tariff talk. Apple currently has two stores in the country, in Mumbai and across companies said there is a visible revival of demand in India after months of slowing sales. They are tapping into this recovery with more investments, distribution, equipment and innovation. 'We've seen some really strong volume growth in India and China,' said Kris Licht, global chief executive officer of the British Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc, maker of Dettol soap and Lizol disinfectant cleaner. 'Of course, these economies may not be immune to shocks that could roll through the global economy. But we expect sustained volume growth here and we're scaling up large innovation.'India is a key growth market for global companies given that various large categories are still underserved. Companies said they are increasing their focus on India with the revival of demand visible after unseasonal rains and geopolitical tensions weighed down sales since came on top of a continued overall slowdown as inflation-hit consumers cut back on discretionary spending over the past two years. Research firm Numerator (formerly Kantar) said in a report last week that demand for groceries, and household and personal care slowed to 3.9% by volume year-on-year in the June quarter, impacted by unseasonal rains.'In the case of India, it's never going to be a straight line and indeed Q2 was not. But we are very bullish on India overall and optimistic about recovery,' said James Quincey, global chief executive of Coca-Cola. 'We've got a strong plan from a marketing and innovation point of view.… with some reenergised focus.'Coca-Cola's unit case volume declined 5% in the Asia-Pacific region in the quarter. It attributed this to a decline in India due to the early onset of the monsoon and geopolitical tensions 'after a strong start to the year', Quincey said. Rival PepsiCo had also reported a decline in its beverage business in India for the 12-week period ended June 14 on account of early rain, but the beverage and snacks maker's global chief executive Ramon Laguarta expressed confidence in India. 'We will adapt our price pack architecture to offer consumers more value and convenience,' he said. The summer months between March and July generally contribute over half of annual sales for soft drink Bhatia, partner, consumer products and retail sector, EY-Parthenon, said: 'Urban growth has been lagging largely because wage inflation was much lower over the last few years. But now, given the closing gap between wage inflation and overall inflation, we expect urban growth rates to hold steady.'Bhatia added that urban growth is expected to improve over the next four-six quarters and get back to 7-8%. 'While there are some consumption headwinds such as layoffs in the IT sector, at the same time, there is change in skill sets that are emerging and I think new jobs will come up,' he refrigerator and washing machine manufacturer Whirlpool Corp's chief financial officer James W Peters said sales in India are lagging initial expectations due to the geopolitical trouble and an unusually cool summer selling season in the second quarter. Whirlpool is in the midst of selling a majority stake in its Indian operations to 'large thirdparty investors'. The company expects this to close by the year end, the management for Dove soap maker Unilever, the past month has seen growth slowing. Apart from that, it's also dealt with the sudden exits of its global and India chiefs. Unilever's global new chief executive officer Fernando Fernandez said Thursday said it would invest disproportionately in two of its largest markets, the US and India, 'to ensure it gets benefits of the parent's scale, advantage and portfolio footprint'. Another category that's seeing green shoots is quick service restaurants. Despite the ongoing slowdown amid intensified competition, they still see India as a better performer than many global Pizza Inc said its growth in Asia last quarter was driven by India. Global chief financial officer Sandeep Reddy said it expects to see 'significant growth' in both India and China. 'I think Jubilant (which has franchisee rights for India) talked about their fiscal year 250 stores in India,' he the case of Apple, industry executives said the new stores are expected to be unveiled next month ahead of the festive season as the company launches new models of the iPhone and other devices. The four new stores are to open in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Canalys has estimated Indiamanufactured smartphones account for 44% of the total imported to the US in the June quarter, up from 13% in the year-ago period. Industry tracker Counterpoint Research said in a report this week that the Indian smartphone market's wholesale value rose 18% year-on-year in the April-June period, reaching its highest-ever quarterly value. It said the iPhone 16 emerged as the most-shipped device in the period, highlighting strong consumer demand.
