One wounded, attacker killed in Jerusalem stabbing: Israeli police

Al Arabiya17-05-2025
The perpetrator of a stabbing attack that left a police officer wounded was shot and killed in annexed east Jerusalem on Friday, Israeli police said.
Israel's first responders, the Magen David Adom, said they had 'treated at the scene and evacuated' the 25-year-old officer to hospital.
'A short time ago, a police officer was stabbed in the Old City of Jerusalem,' a police statement said Friday night, adding the attacker was shot by officers at the scene.
In an update, the force said the officer had 'noticed the suspect and deemed him suspicious. At a certain point, the terrorist charged at the officer and stabbed him in the back with the knife in his possession.'
Another officer, along with a nearby border police officer, 'quickly responded and neutralized the terrorist. He was pronounced dead at the scene.'
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
The Magen David Adom said the wounded officer had been 'fully conscious,' adding his 'condition is moderate, and he is suffering from injuries to his upper body.'
The first responders said the attack took place by the Chain Gate, which provides access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
The site is Islam's third-holiest and a symbol of Palestinian national identity.
Known to Jews as the Temple Mount, it is also Judaism's holiest place, revered as the site of the second temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
Israel has occupied east Jerusalem and its Old City since 1967.

Iran says 27 inmates remain at large after an Israeli airstrike targeted Evin prison

Iran said Tuesday 27 inmates were still at large after an Israeli airstrike last month targeted Evin prison in the north of the capital, Tehran, local media reported. The airstrikes were part of Israel's 12-day bombardment of the Islamic Republic that killed about 1,100 people, while 28 were left dead in Israel in Iranian retaliatory strikes. Judiciary's news website, Mizanonline, quoted spokesman Asghar Jahangir as saying 75 prisoners had escaped following the strike, of which 48 were either recaptured or voluntarily returned. He said authorities will detain the others if they don't hand themselves over. Jahangir said the escapees were prisoners doing time for minor offenses. Iranian officials said the Israeli strike killed 71 people , but local media reported earlier in July that 80 were left dead at the time, including prison staff, soldiers, inmates and visiting family members. Authorities also said five inmates died. It's unclear why Israel targeted the prison. The Israeli Defense Ministry had said that 50 aircraft dropped 100 munitions on military targets 'based on high-quality and accurate intelligence from the Intelligence Branch.' The New York-based Center for Human Rights had criticized Israel for striking the prison, seen as a symbol of repression of any opposition, saying it violated the principle of distinction between civilian and military targets.

Russian police raid popular online media site

Russia's online media site Baza said police raided its office and its editor-in-chief's flat on Tuesday, as investigators launched a probe into media leaks from law enforcement. Baza ('Base') specializes in criminal news, has more than 1.5 million subscribers on Telegram, and is known to have good sources within law enforcement agencies. 'Police officers raided Baza offices,' the outlet wrote on Telegram, adding that they 'also visited the apartment of Baza editor-in-chief Gleb Trifonov, who is currently unreachable.' Russia's Investigative Committee published a post on Telegram saying it had 'initiated a criminal case on abuse of authority by police officers.' It said that raids were conducted in Moscow and in several other regions, without specifying if these were related to the Baza probe. Police members are suspected of leaking classified information that later appeared 'on one of the Telegram channels,' the investigators said. Moscow has escalated its decade-long crackdown on independent media amid its military offensive on Ukraine by passing sweeping censorship laws, effectively banning any criticism of the military.

Houthis claim missile attack targeting Israel's Ben Gurion Airport

Yemen's Houthi militant group said on Tuesday it had launched a ballistic missile at Israel's Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. The Houthis targeted Ben Gurion International Airport 'using a 'Palestine 2' hypersonic ballistic missile,' according to military spokesman Yarya Saree, who had hours earlier claimed a similar attack. The Israeli military said it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen following the activation of air raid sirens in multiple regions across the country. The launch from Yemen follows an Israeli military attack on Houthi targets in Yemen's Hodeidah port on Monday in its latest assault on the Iran-backed militants, who have been striking ships bound for Israel and launching missiles against it.
