Trichy: Across central and southern Tamil Nadu, people came together to mark Eid-al-Adha (Bakrid) with prayer, kindness, and a sense of community. From early morning, Muslims across Trichy and Madurai gathered to offer prayers, share meals, and help those in need — reflecting the spirit of sacrifice, gratitude, and togetherness that the festival stands for.
More than 300 people assembled at the Eidgah grounds in Cantonment and Uzhavar Sandhai in Thennur to offer prayers around 7 am. Common prayers were also held at several mosques in areas such as Pallakarai and E. Pudur. Draped in a mosaic of hijabs — florals, pastels, deep tones — women stood shoulder to shoulder, offering heartfelt duas. From young girls mimicking elders to elderly women whispering quiet prayers, the scenes captured the emotional depth and spirit of Eid.
As part of the festival, Qurbani, the sacred sacrifice of a goat, was performed. After the sacrifice, a portion of the meat is traditionally donated to the poor and needy. Families also invited friends and relatives to their homes to celebrate the occasion.
The festival was marked by the exchange of sweets and delicacies, especially biryani, with neighbours and loved ones. "It's a tradition every year that our friend invites us for biryani at his place during the festival," said Sairam from Karumandapam. As Eid is a public holiday, Trichy hotels experienced a surge in demand for biryani, particularly through online food delivery platforms.

Muharram 2025 Date: When Is Ashura, July 6 Or July 7? Will Schools And Banks Remain Closed?

Last Updated: Muharram 2025: Ashura is observed on the 10th day of Muharram and holds deep importance for Muslims around the world. Muharram 2025 Date: Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, began on June 27, 2025, following the moon sighting on June 26 in India, confirmed by the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee. It is considered the second holiest month in Islam after Ramadan and is a time to remember Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, and mourn his martyrdom. Shia Muslims observe this month by mourning his martyrdom through processions, poetry recitations, and acts of self-flagellation. Sunni Muslims mark the occasion by fasting, praying, and giving to charity. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6. However, the exact date of Ashura is still subject to moon sighting and has not been officially confirmed. When Is Ashura And Why Is It Important? Ashura is observed on the 10th day of Muharram and holds deep importance for Muslims around the world. According to Islamic Relief, the day marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala. It also commemorates the day Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel were saved by Allah from Pharaoh and his army. Many Muslims fast on the 9th of Muharram as a preparation for Ashura, and if they miss fasting on the 9th, they can also fast on the 11th of Muharram. In contrast, Shia Muslims see Ashura as a solemn day of mourning. They commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam, who was killed along with his family and followers in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE by the forces of the Umayyad ruler Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Will Schools And Banks Remain Closed? On the day of Muharram, all government offices, banks, post offices, schools, and many private businesses will remain closed across various states and Union Territories. States with large Muslim populations, like West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, are expected to issue specific updates closer to the date. In addition, special observances and events are expected in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Parents are advised to check local school notices for confirmation. Additionally, trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be suspended on Muharram. Reportedly, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also announced a bank holiday on July 7 in several cities, including Agartala, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram. Gujarat: Single girls not allowed; college student denied flat for rent as she is unmarried, 'If you're Patel…'

A Reddit user shared how his sister, a college student in Gujarat, faced housing discrimination in Gandhinagar. She rented a 3BHK flat with two friends, paid a broker and moved her things. The broker assured them there would be no issue renting as unmarried girls. But, before they could sign the rent agreement, a neighbour complained to the builder. The man demanded that the flat should not be rented to 'single girls'. Although the landlord had no problem, the builder refused to let them stay. When the girl tried to speak to the neighbour and explain, he rudely disconnected the call and blocked her. Now, they must bear extra moving costs and search for a new place just before college starts. 'This is not just disappointing, it's discriminatory,' the Redditor posted. 'Why should young adults, be it students or working, be denied a place to live after everything is finalised just because of outdated societal biases?' Several Reddit users shared their experiences with housing discrimination, especially targeting bachelors and single tenants in India. 'And then Gujaratis say, 'We are the most inclusive',' came a sarcastic remark. The original poster clarified, 'One of the reasons was also because they are not Gujrati. Also a few of my friends who were Gujrati but not Patel also told me how Patels dominate the scene. Like if you're Patel then its like bhai bhai. Otherwise, you will be discriminated against.' One user from Patna was almost evicted by his landlord because his girlfriend visited, which was deemed 'inappropriate'. Others echoed this frustration, questioning why landlords impose such outdated moral standards on paying tenants. Some users have pointed out that inviting friends or partners should be normal when one is renting legally. One comment compared being a bachelor in India to being a second-class citizen. 'In India, people worry more about what is happening in their neighbour's house. They don't spare families how will they spare bachelors,' wrote one user while blaming 'moral policing'. According to another user, Muslims also face severe bias, mentioning even actor Saif Ali Khan being denied property. However, one user countered, 'Muslims still get apartments in muslim locality. Bachelors are not gonna get in neither Hindu or muslim area.'

Muharram 2025: When are schools, colleges and offices shut - July 6 or 7?

After Ramadan, Muharram is one of the most sacred months in Islam and it marks the beginning of the lunar calendar. Being the first month in the Islamic calendar, Muharram is considered the second-holiest month in the Hijri calendar. Muharram is followed by the lunar months of Safar, Rabi-al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada ath-Thaniyah, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Zu al-Qadah (or Dhul Qadah) and Zu al-Hijjah (or Zil Hijjah/Dhul Hijjah). On 10 June 2025, Muharram began for the Muslims globally, and as per details, the 10th day of Muharram is observed as Ashura. This year, the Ashura falls on Sunday, 6 July. According to the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee, as quoted by the Hindustan Times, the crescent Moon was sighted in India on 26 June. So, the first day of Muharram-Ul-Haram began on 27 June and with Ashura falling on Sunday, all public and private sector banks and offices will remain closed on this day. Though this is not confirmed as of yet, states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and West Bengal may announce an official holiday if Muharram is observed on 7 July. This would be done depending on religious and administrative coordination. Parents and students are advised to take updates from the schools, as the decision would be taken by them only after the moon is sighted. Also called Al Hijri or the Arabic New Year, the Islamic New Year starts on the first day of Muharram. The 10th day — Ashura — is observed with mourning by many Muslims in memory of the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussain Ibn Ali, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The battle battle holds immense religious and political significance in Islamic history. For both Sunni and Shia Muslims, Muharram has historical importance. The battle took place during the caliphate of Yazid I. Imam Hussein ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, refused to pledge allegiance due to Yazid's unjust rule. En route to Kufa, Hussein and his small group were intercepted at Karbala. On Ashura, vastly outnumbered, they were denied water and brutally killed, with Imam Hussein martyred for standing up for justice and Islamic values. With Muharram being the first month of the Islamic year, it is considered a sacred time of prayer and reflection. During this time, warfare is forbidden. The month also marks mourning for Imam Hussein's martyrdom, symbolising justice, sacrifice, and resistance against oppression—core values upheld by Muslims during this spiritually significant period.
