The cable has now come ashore at Port Said on the Mediterranean […] Telecom Egypt, the countrys integrated telecom operator and a subsea cables provider, together with SubCom, the global supplier of subsea data systems, has announced the completion of two critical landings of the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system in Egypt. The cable has now come ashore at Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and at Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea. Telecom Egypt facilitated the connection between the two coastal landing points by ensuring diverse and resilient terrestrial crossing routes were in place. With this, the SEA-ME-WE-6 subsea cable has completed its landing activities in Egypt. SEA-ME-WE-6 is the sixth edition of the SEA-ME-WE cable system family. The system connects Singapore (Tuas) to France (Marseille), crossing Egypts territory terrestrially. SubCom serves as the contractor responsible for building the subsea cable system. Upon completion, the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable system will establish a strategic connection between Africa, Asia and Europe through its 17 landing points, significantly enhancing global network infrastructure. Spanning a distance of 21,700 km, the systems consortium comprises 16 major subsea cable providers, including Telecom Egypt, alongside BEYON B.S.C (Bahrain), Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC, Bharti Airtel Ltd. (India), China United Network Communications Group Company Limited, Dhiraagu (Maldives), Djibouti Telecom, Microsoft (United States), Mobily (Saudi Arabia), Orange (France), PCCW Global , Singtel (Singapore), Sri Lanka Telecom, Telekom Malaysia, Telin (Indonesia) and Trans World Associates (Pakistan). Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Egypt, commented: 'We are thrilled to announce the successful landings of the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable system in Port Said and Ras Ghareb, marking another significant milestone in our journey to expand Telecom Egypts global reach and strengthen our subsea infrastructure. These two landings enable the connection between the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments of the cable via two diversified unique trans-Egypt terrestrial crossing routes. 'Over the years, the Eurasia route between Southeast Asia and Europe has proven its importance and effectiveness in carrying critical telecommunication traffic. Thus, we keep developing new routes to connect Singapore and Egypt, adding layers of diversity, enhanced marine paths and much-needed capacity. These strategic landings underscore our commitment to enabling countries across the region and beyond to realize their digital ambitions by investing in building a robust, resilient, and future-ready network to serve the global subsea community.' David Coughlan, President and CEO of SubCom, said: 'Our congratulations to Telecom Egypt and its consortium partners on the landings of SEA-ME-WE-6 in Port Said and Ras Ghareb, which are another major step towards the complete deployment of this expansive subsea cable system. From engineering to route design, and manufacturing to installation, SubCom has played a vital role in making SEA-ME-WE-6 a reality for its operators and their customers. Our team looks forward to the next set of milestones associated with this impressive project.'

Indonesia offers to cut duties on US goods, buy $500mln of wheat in tariff talks
Indonesia has offered to cut duties on key imports from the United States to "near zero" and to buy $500 million worth of U.S. wheat as part of its tariff talks with Washington, its lead negotiator and a wheat industry association said on Friday. Chief economics minister Airlangga Hartarto, who is Indonesia's lead negotiator, also confirmed that state carrier Garuda Indonesia would buy more Boeing planes as part of a $34 billion pact with U.S. partners due to be signed next week. Indonesia, which ran a goods trade surplus of $17.9 billion with the United States in 2024 according to the U.S. Trade Representative, is facing a 32% tariff in U.S. markets and has proposed increasing U.S. imports to facilitate trade talks between the two sides. Airlangga said the Indonesian government has offered to cut tariffs on key American exports, including agricultural products, to near-zero from between 0% and 5% at present. "It will be near zero (tariffs for U.S. main exports), but it will depend as well on how much the tariffs we get from the U.S.," Airlangga said. Garuda's CEO has said it is in discussions with U.S. Boeing to buy up to 75 units of aircraft. Garuda group did not respond to requests for comment on Friday. The wheat purchases are also part of next week's pact with U.S. partners. The chairman of Indonesia's wheat flour mills association, Franciscus Welirang, said its "members will purchase two million tons in total through tenders with a competitive price." "The point is all of the members will buy U.S. wheat," Welirang, who is also a director at Indofood, told Reuters. The U.S. counterparts in the wheat deal include Cargill , Bunge Global SA, Pacificor, Archer-Daniels-Midland, Columbia Grain International, and United Grain Corporation, Welirang added. U.S. exports to Indonesia include soybeans, petroleum gases and aircraft, Indonesian government data showed. When asked whether the trade talks include military deals, Airlangga said they were "not part of the negotiation". Susiwijono Moegiarso, a senior official with Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, told Reuters that in return, Jakarta has asked the United States for preferential tariffs on its main exports, including electronics, textiles and footwear. "We want them to lower the tariffs (for those goods) as low as possible," he said. Indonesia has also offered the United States opportunities to invest in critical minerals projects, including in the country's abundant resources of copper, nickel and bauxite. Singapore monetary authority penalises 9 banks, institutions for 2023 money laundering case
SINGAPORE - The Monetary Authority of Singapore penalised six banks and three other financial institutions a total of S$27.45 million ($21.5 million) on Friday in relation to the country's biggest ever money laundering scandal in 2023. The case involved more than S$3 billion ($2.2 billion) in illicit assets seized after 10 foreigners were busted in a series of simultaneous raids in August 2023. The total penalty is just shy of the S$29.1 million in financial penalties meted out to eight banks in a case involving Malaysia's 1MDB in 2017. The banks involved - Credit Suisse, UOB, UBS , Citibank, Julius Baer, and LGT Bank - were each penalised between S$1 million and S$5.8 million. Brokerage firm UOB Kay Hian, asset management firm Blue Ocean Invest and trust and fund services company Trident Trust Company Singapore were also penalised S$2.85 million, S$2.4 million and S$1.8 million respectively. The penalties mark the conclusion of MAS's enforcement actions against financial institutions. The 10 convicted money launderers were sentenced to jail terms of between 13 and 17 months in the nation's largest case of its kind. They were deported and barred from re-entering Singapore after completing their sentences. The criminals held money gained from overseas scams and online gambling operations in bank accounts in Singapore, and converted some of their cash into real estate, cars, handbags and jewellery. MAS said it has identified shortcomings in the financial institutions' customer risk assessments, their tracing of the sources of customers' wealth as well as their ability to monitor and follow up on suspicious transactions. "The financial institutions have embarked on remediation of the deficiencies and MAS will monitor their progress closely," it said. Four people were also issued prohibition orders preventing them from carrying out MAS-regulated activities. In response to media queries, UOB said that it has implemented prompt remedial actions over the past two years and committed significant investments to enhance its internal risk management standards and capabilities further. UBS, which agreed to take over Credit Suisse in March 2023, said that it acknowledged the findings and has cooperated fully with authorities to resolve the issue. Blue Ocean Invest said that the company has fully cooperated with the authorities and has implemented measures to enhance internal policies and procedures. A Trident Trust Company spokesperson also said it has cooperated with MAS's inspection and implemented a remediation plan to address breaches. Citibank, In August last year, Singapore charged two ex-bankers from Citi and Julius Baer for forging loan and tax documents for the money launderers. Singapore has also sought to make it easier for law enforcement to prosecute money laundering offences in the city-state. In June 2024, the government identified Singapore's banking sector as posing the highest money laundering risk in the city-state.
