A 16-year-old boy killed a child and injured two other people during an attack at a school in southern Brazil, authorities said.
The attack - which took place at the Maria Nascimento Giacomazzi school in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul - involved two children, an eight-year-old girl and nine-year-old boy, as well as a 34-year-old teacher who tried to intervene in the assault.
The male child did not survive his injuries, but the female child and teacher were in stable condition, police said.
Law enforcement did not confirm the weapon used in the attack, but Estacao Mayor Geverson Zimmermann told reporters the victims suffered stab wounds.
He added that the suspected attacker was known to teachers at the school and had been undergoing "psychological treatment."
Zimmermann said security at the school had been reinforced recently, with fences added and increased personnel, after a recent increase in attacks at educational centers.
In April 2023, four children between the ages of four and seven were murdered with an axe at a daycare center in Bluemenau, in the southern state of Santa Catarina.
Two months later, two teenagers ages 16 and 17 died when a man opened fire at a school in the southern Brazilian state of Parana.
The worst attack at an educational institution in Brazil took place in 2011, when 12 children died after a man opened fire at a kindergarten in Realengo, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, before he took his own life.

Barcelona announce new number for Lamine Yamal as contract is signed
Barcelona have announced that Lamine Yamal will be their new number 10, as well as confirming a contract renewal in the process. The Blaugrana have locked in their premier talent until 2031, on a six-year deal with the Blaugrana. The Blaugrana announced that Lamine Yamal would be their new number 10 via a video, with a mural also painted in his neighbourhood of Rocafonda in Mataro, a town close to Barcelona. Lamine Yamal inherits the number from Ansu Fati, who himself succeeded Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho. Lamine Yamal has eyes on victory this season Speaking to the Barcelona club media after the renewal, which will remarkably keep him at the club until he is just 23, he described it as 'a dream'. 'It's a dream since I was young, and I'm very happy, with all of my family here. It's a dream.' 'The club is my life. I've been here since I was seven years old, it's my home. To get to the first team from La Masia is a dream, now I'm achieving that dream, and I have to keep working.' In terms of his goals, the recently turned 18-year-old had his mind firmly on victory. 'To win, always to win, to enjoy myself and to continue growing. But above all to win.' '[To the fans, my message is that] I'm really looking forward to playing at the new stadium, we'll enjoy ourselves a lot, and we will win, no doubt.' Image via FC Barcelona Lamine Yamal's new contract His new deal will fend off any interest from other giants. The previous season, Paris Saint-Germain had enquired about the then 16-year-old, with figures of around €200m being floated for the teenage wizard. He has a €1b release clause, and is set to become one of the best-earners at Barcelona, with a base wage of €8m per annum. Those wages will be supplemented by bonuses and are likely to ascend with time too. Contract renewals on the horizon It is unlikely to be his last contract renewal before 2031 though. Already Lamine Yamal is being spoken about in the same terms as Lionel Messi, who received almost constant renewals, with wage rises coming every two years for the Argentine. Should Lamine Yamal's progress continue, agent Jorge Mendes will no doubt be renegotiating on a regular basis with the Blaugrana.

Brazil's debt outlook worsens as Treasury projects sharp rise through Lula's term
By Marcela Ayres BRASILIA (Reuters) -The Brazil Treasury's outlook for the country's gross public debt has worsened, with a forecast rise by 10.6 percentage points during President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's current term, 0.6 point higher than its previous estimate in December. In its latest fiscal projections report released on Wednesday, the Treasury forecast the gross debt-to-GDP ratio - a key solvency indicator - to reach 82.3% by 2026, the final year of Lula's leftist administration, up from 71.7% when he took office. If confirmed, it would be the indicator's second-worst deterioration under a presidential term, according to available data from the central bank, behind only 2015-2018, after Brazil faced a historic recession, fiscal crisis and presidential impeachment. For this year, the debt ratio is expected to rise 2.5 points to 79.0% of GDP. According to the Treasury, gross debt is projected to peak at 84.3% of GDP in 2028, a significant increase from the projected peak of 81.8% in 2027 seen just seven months ago. The upward revision reflects the incorporation of higher assumptions for interest rates, exchange rate and inflation, the Treasury said. Latin America's largest economy already holds a high gross debt burden compared with its emerging market peers, with the debt burden growing as borrowing costs rise. Nearly half of Brazil's debt stock is directly linked to the benchmark interest rate, the Selic, whose increases immediately raise debt servicing costs. Since September, the central bank has hiked rates by 450 basis points to a near two-decade high of 15% in a bid to rein in inflation, which has persistently run above the 3% target, with markets remaining skeptical about inflation convergence amid surging public spending under Lula. Sangoma and Quicklert Announce Strategic Partnership to Help Schools Comply with Alyssa's Law and Enhance Campus Safety
MARKHAM, Ontario & CARMEL, Ind., July 16, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sangoma Technologies Corporation (TSX: STC; Nasdaq: SANG) ("Sangoma"), a trusted industry leader uniquely offering businesses a choice of on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid Communications as a Service solutions, and Quicklert, a pioneer in AI-powered communications, emergency notification and security technology emergency communication and safety platforms, are proud to announce a strategic go-to-market partnership to enhance safety and communications across the education sector, and expanding into other industries such as healthcare, government, hospitality, and retail. This partnership is strategically aligned with Sangoma's commitment to delivering solutions that address the unique needs of vertical markets. Starting with the education sector, Sangoma and Quicklert are enabling schools to meet critical safety mandates such as Alyssa's Law, which requires public elementary and secondary school buildings to be equipped with silent panic alarms that directly notify law enforcement in case of emergencies. This partnership between Sangoma and Quicklert ensures schools are fully equipped with integrated voice, video, and emergency response technologies—unified under one platform—so they can act quickly when every second matters. "We are committed to helping schools build safe, smart campuses where students and educators feel secure," said Charles Salameh, CEO of Sangoma. "By partnering with Quicklert, we're combining best-in-class communications with proactive emergency alerting. Together, we can help schools meet legal safety requirements while reducing operational complexity and cost." The joint solution enables school districts to unify their Public Address (PA) systems, bells, intercoms, clocks, video surveillance, panic buttons, front office consoles, access control, IP communications, and emergency alerting into a single unified experience powered by Sangoma and Quicklert. Several school districts have already experienced the impact of the Sangoma and Quicklert solution: Dowling Catholic High School (Iowa), with Quicklert's platform and devices modernized its entire campus by replacing outdated PA, intercom, clock and bell systems with video intercoms, Live video broadcast and AI-based video surveillance, one-touch emergency help functions and local 911 alerts—connected through Sangoma's communication solution. Great Hearts Schools of Texas needed to conform to Texas 911 laws, providing location information to first responders and internal resources. In order to do this, they would have required a DID line to every single classroom to provide this location information. After months of struggling with other solutions, they adopted Quicklert to provide instant, silent alerts off 911 calls - with location information - across 14 different campuses throughout Texas, all integrated with Sangoma's UCaaS Solution (Switchvox). Thanks to the Sangoma integration, they were able to install and run the system in under an hour. "Our mission has always been to deliver a single, intelligent platform that makes schools safer and communications simpler. Partnering with Sangoma will help us to achieve that mission on a global scale," said Alok Jain, CEO & Founder of Quicklert.
