‘Nothing much the govt can do': Centre tells SC on Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen
Appearing before a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani, the highest law officer of the Centre, submitted, 'There is nothing much the government can do! Looking at the sensitivity of Yemen, the country is not diplomatically recognised. There is a point till which the Government of India can go, and we have reached that.'
The Attorney General (AG) said that the Union government did not want to complicate the situation by going public and was taking 'utmost possible efforts' to rescue the Indian national from the gallows.
He added that a request was also forwarded to Yemeni prosecution authorities to suspend the execution of the sentence, but it yielded no positive results.
'We got an informal communication that execution would be put in abeyance, but we do not know if it will work out,' AG Venkataramani said.
The Justice Nath-led Bench was dealing with a plea filed by 'Save Nimisha Priya Action Council' seeking directions to the Union Ministry of External Affairs to use diplomatic channels to stall Nimisha Priya's execution.
The plea, referring to Sharia law, stated that the death penalty could be negotiated with the payment of 'diya (blood money)' to the victim's family.
Indian national Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to death for the murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mehd, has been in prison for the last three years. According to media reports, she is tentatively set to be executed on Wednesday, following the approval of the Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi.
Expressing its inability to pass an order to prevent execution in a foreign nation, the Supreme Court has posted the matter for the next hearing on July 18 and asked the Centre to file a fresh status report on the date fixed.
Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to 'intervene with the authorities concerned' to save Nimisha Priya's life.
The mother of Priya, Prema Kumari (57), has been tirelessly campaigning to secure a waiver of the death penalty. She has also travelled to Sanaa to negotiate the payment of blood money to the victim's family. Her efforts have been supported by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a group of NRI social workers based in Yemen.

Declare Lodhi-era 'Gumti of Shaikh Ali' protected monument: Supreme Court to Delhi government
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) directed the Delhi government to issue a fresh notification to declare the Lodhi-era monument "Gumti of Shaikh Ali" a protected monument under law. The dispute over the monument came to limelight when the top court directed the Defence Colony resident welfare association to vacate its structures and pay ₹40 lakh to the archaeology department of the Delhi government as compensation for occupying the historical place since the 1960s. A bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah was hearing a plea filed by Defence Colony resident Rajeev Suri, who sought to have the Gumti declared a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958 (AMASR Act). The plea was filed in the top court after the Delhi High Court dismissed his plea in 2019. The top court has been regularly passing directions to ensure the removal of encroachments, illegal occupation, and beautification of the monument and its surrounding area. On Wednesday (July 16, 2025), the bench examined a Delhi government notification and said it was not 'happily worded'. 'Let the notification (to declare the monument as a protected one under the law) be re-issued by the Delhi government,' the bench said. Protected monuments under the AMASR Act benefit from legal protection, conservation efforts, and restrictions on activities around them to ensure their preservation for future generations. Such monuments are safeguarded against damage, destruction, and unauthorized construction or excavation in their vicinity. The bench asked the authorities to demolish the illegal structures inside the monument area. The bench also asked the court commissioner to inspect the area and apprise the bench about the work undertaken in pursuance of the directions issued. It asked the authorities, including the archaeology department, to make and execute plans to beautify and preserve the monument and its surrounding areas. The bench previously directed the MCD and others to remove all encroachments around "Gumti of Shaikh Ali". It also ordered the MCD and DJB to vacate and hand over their office spaces to the Land and Development Office. The bench subsequently reprimanded the MCD for continuing to operate an office near the monument and granted 48 hours to it to clear the site of 'lock, stock, and barrel'.

NCERT Class 8 book calls Babur 'ruthless', Akbar's rule 'brutal, tolerant'
In the latest edition of NCERT's Class 8 Social Science textbook, Babur is described as a 'ruthless conqueror', Akbar's rule is said to combine 'brutality and tolerance', and Aurangzeb is labelled a 'military ruler' who re-imposed taxes on non-Muslims. The revised text aims to encourage students to think critically about the complexities of India's medieval history, including its grandeurs and violence, news agency PTI reported. Titled 'Exploring Society: India and Beyond', the book is part of NCERT's updated curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. It shifts the entire timeline of topics like the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, the Marathas, and the colonial period to Class 8. These subjects were previously taught in Class 7, PTI reported. At the start of the book is a section titled 'Note on Some Darker Periods in History', which explains the inclusion of sensitive historical content. It urges students to view violent past events — such as wars and invasions — with context and objectivity, stating, 'No one should be held responsible today for events of the past.' The chapter 'Reshaping India's Political Map' covers Indian history from the 13th to the 17th century, including the Delhi Sultanate, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Mughal Empire, and various forms of resistance. Babur is described as 'brutal and ruthless, slaughtering entire populations', while Aurangzeb is noted for temple and gurdwara destruction and for reviving the jiziya tax. Akbar's reign, though praised for religious tolerance, is also marked by harsh events like the killing of 30,000 civilians during the Chittorgarh siege. The book also reinterprets jiziya tax as a source of social humiliation and financial pressure, encouraging conversion to Islam. In earlier editions, the tax was explained more neutrally, PTI reported. While the Mughal and Sultanate sections portray a grim period in history, the textbook also celebrates resistance movements and resilient leaders. It includes stories of the Marathas, Ahoms, Rajputs, and Sikhs. Leaders like Shivaji, Tarabai, and Ahilyabai Holkar are described as visionary figures. Shivaji is hailed as a strategic leader who upheld Hindu values while respecting other faiths. Michel Danino, head of NCERT's Social Science curriculum group, denied any intent to vilify Mughals. Union Minister of State BL Verma supported the content, saying, 'The next generation should learn about what all happened. We should accept the truth.' Mughals, Sultanate dropped from NCERT textbooks The new Class 7 NCERT Social Science textbook has completely removed references to the Mughals and the Delhi Sultanate. Instead, it now features chapters on ancient Indian dynasties such as the Magadha, Mauryas, Shungas, and Satavahanas, along with themes like sacred geography and the Maha Kumbh. Government initiatives like Make in India and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' have also been included. Designed as per the National Education Policy and NCFSE 2023, the book aims to reflect Indian traditions and knowledge systems. Earlier, during syllabus rationalisation in 2022-23, NCERT had already reduced Mughal-related content significantly.
