Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jiachim Gunsakam officiated the event in commemoration of the 2015 earthquake.
Advertisement Dr Joachim, who is also Kundasang Assemblyman, described the event as thrilling and off-road motor expedition. 'The event served as a powerful tribute to the victims of the devastating earthquake a decade ago,' he added. Organised in collaboration with the Ranau District Office, Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark and the Mesilou Volunteer Club (Mevoc), the event featured three running categories: a 6km school category, 12km veteran and open. The enthusiastic participation spanned all ages, from schoolchildren to adults, showcasing the community's resilience and spirit of remembrance.
Advertisement Joachim expressed his gratitude to all involved in making the event a success, including Ranau District Officer Tinus Manggam, Sabah Parks' Assistant Director Justinus Guntabid and Mevoc President Samsul Sinun. Dr Joachim highlighted the event's dual purpose: honouring the earthquake victims and fostering community spirit. Meanwhile, Sabah Parks Director Dr Maklarin Lakim emphasised the annual remembrance activities held since June 5, 2016, including rescue simulations and safety improvements in mountainous areas. He said this year's event expanded beyond the race, incorporating a comprehensive earthquake safety briefing at the Kundasang Cultural Stage, free health checks, a Rahmah sale, an ecotourism exhibition organised by Mevoc, MAH, Meta and Kopsodik; a Kopstar Bhd farmers' market and a lucky draw with prizes including washing machines, bicycles, electrical appliances and hampers. The event successfully combined physical activity with educational initiatives and community engagement, creating a meaningful and memorable commemoration. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Early action fire prevention program launched in Tanjung Aru Baru

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Dr. Ritchie (left) watches as Tanjung Aru Baru residents learn to use fire extinguishers with Fire and Rescue Department supervision. KOTA KINABALU: A community-led initiative, the Early Action Fire Prevention and Fire Extinguisher Distribution Program, was launched in Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru to reduce fire risks in the area. Organised by Dr. Ritchie Jay Cheng, Committee Member of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah for the Tanjung Aru constituency, in collaboration with the JKKK Tanjung Aru Baru and the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department, the program places fire extinguishers at strategic points around the village and provides residents and volunteer firefighters with hands-on training. The effort comes as the village faces heightened fire risks during the prolonged hot spell. Since 2021, at least 79 houses in Kampung Tanjung Aru have been destroyed by fires. 'I believe early awareness and community cooperation are key to preventing fire tragedies and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents,' Dr. Ritchie said at the launch today. Authorities hope the program's proactive approach will help prevent further losses in the fire-prone settlement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? NCR poverty line at P20,000

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Philstar Text Size: Children sorting through garbage at a slum along the shoreline of Baseco Beach in Manila. MANILA: Filipino families say they now need at least P12,000 monthly to stay out of poverty, with those in Metro Manila placing the threshold even higher at P20,000, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed. Threshold, or the minimum monthly budget that families say they need for home expenses not to consider themselves poor, rose for the first time this year to P12,000, up from P10,000 last quarter. The increase reflects the persistent rise in food, transport and utility costs. Despite this adjustment, SWS noted that poverty thresholds have remained sluggish over time, suggesting that families have been lowering their standards and tightening their belts just to cope with the economic strain. The nationwide survey, conducted from June 25 to 29, also found that 49pc of Filipino families still consider themselves poor, slightly lower than the 50pc recorded in April, but still equivalent to around 13.7 million households. Broken down by region, Mindanao had the highest proportion of families rating themselves as poor at 69pc, an 8-point jump from April. The Visayas followed at 60pc, then Balance Luzon at 38pc, and Metro Manila at 36pc. The number of families who said they were 'not poor' fell in most areas except in the Visayas, where it rose from 24pc to 28pc. It declined to 57pc in Metro Manila (from 60pc) and to 21pc in Mindanao (from 29pc), while remaining steady in Balance Luzon at 52pc. Food poverty also remains widespread. The June survey found 41pc of families considered themselves food-poor, the same level as in April. Mindanao again led with the highest incidence at 60pc, followed by the Visayas (44pc), Balance Luzon (34pc) and Metro Manila (31pc). The percentage of families who considered themselves not food-poor slightly declined to 49pc, while those on the food-poverty borderline rose to 10%, up from 7pc. To keep up with essential living expenses, the average Filipino family now spends: P3,000 monthly for rent P2,000 for transportation to work or school P800 for internet connection P300 for mobile phone load Families in Metro Manila reported the highest monthly internet cost at P1,000 and phone load at P420, while those in Mindanao had the lowest, spending only P350 and P200, respectively. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
