England must tap into the old lump-it-long, bulldog spirit to slay Spain in the Euro 2025 final, writes IAN HERBERT
There was a brief moment of confusion on the eve of the Lionesses' Euros semi-final against Italy when Sarina Wiegman was asked if she had 'fallen in love' with England and, not entirely understanding why she was being asked, did not come straight out with the most fulsome answer. 'Yes…' she replied, rather falteringly and without elaboration. Wiegman later said it had been a comprehension problem. It can be this way with her. English language and colloquialisms — 'console your team' and 'let the cat out of the bag' — have flummoxed her over the past few years. The question was extremely relevant given the way 'Englishness', in an old-fashioned 1980s football sense, has been the team's watchword here, and referenced by a2 number of the players of how England survived a bumpy road to reach Sunday's final against Spain. Chloe Kelly arrived to speak on Tuesday as the semi-final's player of the match and declared: 'I'm proud to be English.' The theme resurfaced when Keira Walsh was asked about the never-say-die resilience which rescued the team against Sweden in the last eight, then Italy, 30 seconds from time. 'It's a part of being English,' she said. 'What we speak about as a team is that English resilience and we pride ourselves on it.' The FA have gone to great lengths to create a different definition of Englishness in the past 10 years. There is the fabled 'England DNA', dreamt up at St George's Park, about progressive, technical football through all the age groups and, under Gareth Southgate, a more broad-minded, less narrow view of nationhood. But the Lionesses in these past three weeks have reverted to what men's football would call the bulldog spirit: a fighting, never-say-die mentality. 'Do or die' has been the only way, as seen in the dramatic last-eight and semi-final comebacks Some of this fighting spirit has been a necessary product of England's failure to get anywhere near the technical levels they found in the 2022 tournament. Finalists they might be, but they have not played well in progressing the ball up the pitch. 'Do or die' has been the only way. To watch back the two goals England scored in their comeback win against Spain in the 2022 quarter-final is to be reminded of how diminished in technical brio and confidence they seem to have become. But there has also been a profitable reversion to the old England. When her team was being torn apart by France in the opening game, Wiegman told Walsh, the midfield technician, to play longer balls. Against the Dutch, who England rightly expected would press them, Walsh went vertical again in what was the team's best display here. 'It helped us playing longer,' Walsh said. 'It plays to our forwards' strengths. If the way to win is playing one straight pass that's what we're going to do.' Against the weaker Welsh, England played through the midfield. The numbers bear out this reversion to what was once an admired and feared brand of English football. The percentage of England passes sent long has increased from 10.6 per cent at the 2023 World Cup, where they were beaten by Spain in the final, to 13.2 here, Stats Perform data shows. Their number of successful passes which are long is 201 (9.1 per cent) compared with 5.8 per cent at the World Cup and 7.5 per cent at the 2022 Euros. Heading into a final against the best passing team in the world, the principles of scrapping and lumping it seem a good way to win and find sweet recompense for the one-sided 2023 World Cup final. Become engaged in a midfield battle with Patri Guijarro, Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas and it could be a long night. Beautiful though their tiki-taka aesthetic was in the semi-final against Germany, Spain struggled to create scoring chances. A long ball attack on Spain down England's left would put Lauren Hemp up against right back Ona Batlle. Hemp has had the better of that battle during Manchester derbies, when Batlle played for United and Hemp, now at Barcelona, was with City. The key is getting Hemp in behind Batlle to find crosses which can target the 34-year-old Spanish captain Irene Paredes, whose lack of pace can be exploited. England's equaliser against Spain three years ago demonstrated the value of going aerial in this way. A gorgeous left-footed cross by Hemp saw Alessia Russo beat Parades in the air, leaving her flat on the ground as Ella Toone pounced on the dropping ball to score. England won 2-1. There were similarities between that Toone goal and the equaliser against Italy: a cross from even deeper on the right and the ball dropping to Michelle Agyemang to score. England get lots of bodies in the box and have some of the best headers of the ball in this tournament. The potential for this plan to deliver the early goal screams out for 19-year-old Agyemang, the prodigy, to start, though she almost certainly will not. Wiegman bristled when asked on Tuesday if Agyemang, who appeared from the bench in both knock-out games here and changed the course of them, was forcing her to consider her as a starter. 'She's not forcing me,' Wiegman said. 'She's grateful for minutes and been ready for it.' A vital contributor to a more direct approach will be Lucy Bronze — a huge presence in the past month. She got forward down the right for the back-post header against the Swedes. Her decisive penalty in that game confirmed her as the fearless epitome of this resilient England. 'I don't think we've ever negated tactics or anything else that comes with the game with the term 'proper England', Bronze said. 'But we don't want to ever forget we are England — proper England — and if push comes to shove, we can win in any means possible.' Georgia Stanway, another of the pillars of the team, feels the same. 'We've spoken about wanting to be proper England,' she said. 'We want to go back to what we're good at, a traditional style of football in terms of tough tackles, getting back down to our roots.' It has been a rollercoaster ride for this team. Perhaps the most improbable journey to a final. But the chaos of these past weeks has armed them with a psychological edge: a knowledge they are never beaten.

From delays to 'sub-par' performances with barely any singing - insiders reveal what's really going on with Justin Timberlake's world tour
Justin Timberlake 's world tour has been mired in controversy since his DWAI arrest in the Hamptons, where he made headlines when he told the officer, 'This is going to ruin the tour.' Since his much-publicized brush with the law in Sag Harbor, Timberlake's tour has been plagued with a slew of issues, including wardrobe malfunctions, low ticket sales, last-minute cancelations, feuds with his staff, and now, accusations of 'lazy' performances. Earlier in July, an explosive video surfaced of Timberlake, 44, completely losing it on his stage crew in the middle of his set at England's Lytham Festival. The viral clip showed the pop star trying to keep his cool after sound issues disrupted his performance of Cry Me a River. Timberlake seemingly had a meltdown, and launched into a furious tirade before storming away from his stunned team. But that's not the end of his touring woes. Now, the pop superstar is facing backlash from his fans for his tour stops in Romania and Ireland as they accuse him of a 'lazy' lip sync and demand that he's canceled for wasting his fans money. Daily Mail can exclusively reveal the drama behind his controversial concerts... and why his wife Jessica Biel is pleading with him to give up touring amid the brutal backlash. One insider told the Daily Mail that the SexyBack singer is 'in a rut' amid his flailing tour and desperately 'needs to do something new.' After he played Romania, a viral TikTok received 460,000 likes after a fan who paid 'a lot of money' to see him called him 'an absolute disappointment.' The Social Network star was late getting onstage, and then apparently only sang about five words of each song, according to concert-goers. He also wore glasses and a hat, so the audience couldn't see him, leading many to walk out in anger. 'You can't be singing two songs and then taking a break,' the content creator said, calling his behavior 'rude' and 'disrespectful,' before asking him to 'rethink' the concept behind his tour. The 'lackluster' performance was so embarrassing that multiple fans demanded a refund. In Dublin, his performance was much the same, as showcased by videos of Timberlake dropping the mic and simply walking around the stage lazily, without doing the dance moves he's known for. The same insider divulged that Timberlake 'wants to create new music and to do something he hasn't done yet' but feels stuck singing the same old songs he's been performing for decades, leaving him unmotivated. While there have been murmurs that he would reunite with his boy band NSYNC, it has yet to come to fruition. The reunion rumors reached a fever pitch as their former competitors the Backstreet Boys reunited at the Las Vegas Sphere as part of a historic residency. In fact, fans online begged Timberlake to rejoin his former boy band, joking that if he wanted to sing so little during his recent tour dates, he should at least have the others join him onstage. 'It's embarrassing how he's been basically doing karaoke,' the insider agreed. 'He knows that he's lost his mojo and he really wants it back.' A separate source weighed in on the state of his marriage, and how the tour has been leading to issues with his actress wife. The couple share two children, Silas, 10, and Phineas, four. 'Jessica thinks Justin has aged years since he started The Forget Tomorrow World Tour last April,' the insider claimed. While the tour is set to end on July 30, with stops left in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, Biel, 43, has seen 'how it has taken its toll on him, not just physically but emotionally.' Timberlake's devoted wife has stood by him amid multiple high-profile controversies, including in 2019, when he was caught holding hands with actress Alisha Wainwright during a night out in New Orleans. Now, Biel is worried that he's 'taken on way too much,' with the insider adding that 'he's no longer a twentysomething who can fly around the world doing concert after concert.' While Timberlake previously reigned supreme in the pop world, he's been met with lackluster sales and even worse reviews throughout the tour. Some locations have even dropped tickets to embarrassingly low prices while he's also performed to half full venues. It hasn't helped Timberlake's case that he's been forced to cancel a number of concerts with short notice, leaving fans fuming after they spent money and in some cases even traveled to the shows before getting the news that he wasn't taking the stage. In February, the Cry Me a River singer canceled the final show on his U.S. tour at Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Arena Thursday, claiming he was sick. The shock announcement came only four months after he canceled his October 23 concert at the same venue amid a bout with laryngitis and bronchitis. It's not just his fans that are upset. The insider spilled that one reason Timberlake has been upset is because 'ticket sales haven't been as buoyant as he'd hoped.' 'He's become short tempered both on and off stage,' the source divulged.

Collapse of fashion label The Vampire's Wife investigated
The fallout from the closure of a cult fashion brand worn by royalty and celebrities remains unresolved as investigations continue into events leading to its collapse. The Vampire's Wife was launched by Susie Bick, the former supermodel and wife of the musician Nick Cave. The brand's Falconetti dress was worn by the Princess of Wales for her official portrait alongside Prince William, completed by Jamie Coreth in 2022. Other customers included the actors Jennifer Aniston and Rachel Weisz, the model Kate Moss, and singers Florence Welch and Kylie Minogue. Harry Styles, the singer, and Brad Pitt, the actor, have the label's custom-made tote bags. The company went into administration in July last year after receiving a tax bill from HM Revenue & Customs, which was owed more than £700,000. The administrator's accounts showed that although the company had £852,000 in a bank account, its total estimated financial deficiency was £1.18 has already settled an outstanding bill from a financing company recorded as being owed £600,000 after it called in his personal guarantee. The winding up of a company normally ends within 12 months, but the administrators have been given more time after saying they are investigating the brand's affairs prior to its collapse. The administrators stated in their most recent report: 'Initial assessment of the company's records suggested that there could be a matter that might lead to recoveries for the insolvent estate and thus further investigations were considered necessary.' Bick, 58, launched the label in 2014 and named it after an unfinished novel written by her Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats Electronics, made a significant investment in the company in 2019. Bick's son, Arthur, died aged 15 in a fall from a cliff near Brighton after taking LSD in 2015. Cave's album, Ghosteen, was written in the aftermath. Bick announced the closure of the fashion label in an Instagram post in May last year, writing: 'I wish to thank my extended family at The Vampire's Wife who helped me create such beautiful things.' Cave, 67, later wrote on social media: 'The Vampire's Wife was not just a clothing company, it was a pure and necessary articulation of the grief that Susie felt in the wake of the death of our son, Arthur. 'The Vampire's Wife was Susie's Ghosteen … Susie's dresses were an attempt to give her grief form by throwing fabric over an invisible boy, as an act of love, an act of mercy, and an act of contrition… 'The clothes Susie created were objects of devotion, sacred things that will live on regardless of the brand's fortunes.'
