Sailor rescued from drifting yacht off Waterford coast during strong winds
Ballycotton RNLI launched just before 2pm on Tuesday following a call for assistance from the skipper of a 14-metre yacht, which had encountered difficulties due to strong onshore winds around one and a half miles from Ram Head.
The station's all-weather Trent class lifeboat, The Austin Lidbury, was launched and navigated through Force 5 winds, a two-metre swell, and poor visibility to reach the yacht's location, approximately 12 miles from Ballycotton.
The lifeboat arrived on scene at 2.25pm and the crew quickly established a tow line.
With wind and tide in their favour, the lifeboat brought the yacht safely back to Ballycotton Harbour by 4.30pm.
'It was very fresh out there, but thanks to the quick actions of the sailor, we were able to prevent the situation from deteriorating near the shore,' Ballycotton RNLI Coxswain Eolan Walsh said.
'We would remind everyone to follow appropriate water safety advice for their activity and to always carry a means of raising the alarm in case of emergency.'
He was joined on the callout by volunteer crew members Eolan Breathnach, Mike Kenneally, Mike Hallahan, and Adrian Erangey.

Arsenal in advanced talks to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP
Arsenal are in advanced talks with Sporting CP over a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres. A deal for the 27-year-old striker is not done as discussions continue over the transfer fee — but the situation is progressing towards a conclusion. Personal terms are in place on a proposed five-year contract, the Sweden international having prioritised a move to Arsenal for some time. Advertisement Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is pushing to have the situation brought to a swift conclusion ahead of his squad's return to pre-season training. Gyokeres is one of Europe's most in-demand players after scoring 54 goals in 52 games in 2024-25 as Sporting won the Portuguese league and cup double. The Athletic reported on March 30 that Arsenal were developing a strong interest in Gyokeres, who had been admired for some time by their newly-appointed sporting director Andrea Berta. Last month, Sporting president Frederico Varandas insisted the club had yet to receive any offers for the striker and said his side will not succumb to 'blackmail and insults' as speculation over the future of the Sweden international continues. Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 matches. Gyokeres moved to English football in 2017-18 when joining Brighton & Hove Albion, but made just eight appearances for the south-coast club and scored one goal. After loan spells at St. Pauli and Swansea City, he then joined Coventry, initially on loan, for whom he scored 43 goals across two and a half seasons before his move to Portugal. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko has also been tracked by Arsenal for some time as they seek to add a forward to Mikel Arteta's squad. Sesko, 22, signed a new contract with Leipzig last summer but the Bundesliga club's failure to reach the Champions League has increased the possibility of a summer sale. That new contract removed a €65m release clause but was signed with a mutual understanding that when the right project arrived, Sesko would be allowed to leave for a fair price. Arsenal were without a recognised No 9 for the bulk of the second half of the 2024-25 season after serious injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in January and February respectively. Midfielder Mikel Merino often deputised as a striker in their absence. Arsenal have completed the signing of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea and Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Analysis by data writer Thom Harris There's quite an obvious appeal to Gyokeres when flicking through the numbers; his 68 league goals since joining Sporting two summers ago is well over double that of any other player in Portugal throughout that time, a brutal finisher, able to generate freakish power on either side. Advertisement But there's more to the Swede than just lasered shots and penalty-box poaching — Gyokeres is a prodigious runner, direct, explosive, and with the physical capacity to repeat those movements at high intensity. As we can see from his SkillCorner run profile below — comparing his off-ball work to strikers across Europe's top seven leagues — he's often targeting the space in-behind, or pulling wide to run the channels, happy to take a defender out wide before powering inside and getting his shot away. The Premier League, of course, is a different proposition, and while Gyokeres clearly has the physical capabilities to battle it out with the strongest of centre-backs, he may not be afforded quite as much space to attack for a side such as Arsenal, often pass-heavy and patient in their build-up. He also isn't prolific in the air, without a single headed goal in league football last season. But the Swede is a handful, a guaranteed goalscorer, a relentless runner, and a ruthless No.9 who can turn half-chances into goals. If Premier League teams thought they had figured out Arteta's Arsenal, this signing adds a new dimension.

Arsenal sign £50m-plus Martín Zubimendi after seeing off Real Madrid interest
Arsenal have confirmed the arrival of Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad on a five-year contract. The Spain international, who turned down Liverpool last summer, was heavily linked with Real Madrid in recent weeks despite being understood in March to have a pre-agreement to join Arsenal. With Mikel Arteta having made the 26-year-old his primary midfield target as Arsenal attempt to bridge the gap after three successive runners-up finishes in the Premier League, Zubimendi's signing represents a major boost after the departures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey at the end of their contacts last week. Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault – allegations he denies – three days after leaving. Arsenal are believed to have been searching for midfield replacements since last summer, with Zubimendi emerging as their preferred option thanks to his impressive displays for Real Sociedad and Spain. Their attempts to sign him last summer alongside Mikel Merino – who left Real Sociedad for about £32m – are understood to have been rejected because the Spanish side did not want to lose both players in the same transfer window. Arsenal were able to secure a pre-agreement in March after continuing talks. The fee is believed to be slightly more than his release clause of £51m after they fought off late interest from Madrid, whose new manager, Xabi Alonso, coached Zubimendi for Real Sociedad's B side. 'Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me,' Zubimendi told Arsenal's website. 'It's a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come.' Brentford's Christian Nørgaard is also expected to complete his move to Arsenal after the clubs agreed a deal worth up to £15m, and Arsenal are understood to have discussed personal terms with Chelsea's Noni Madueke and are weighing up whether to bid for the England international. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Arteta said of Zubimendi: 'Martín is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us. The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.'

Arsenal sign Spain midfielder Zubimendi from Real Sociedad
July 6 (Reuters) - Arsenal have signed defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad on a long-term contract, the Premier League club said on Sunday as the club reinforced a key position weakened by departures last month. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reports said the 26-year-old had a 60 million euros ($70.67 million) release clause at Sociedad where he had a contract until 2027. Zubimendi is Arsenal's second recruit in the close-season after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen a squad that can get over the line in the title race after finishing runners-up in the last three Premier League seasons. "This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are," Zubimendi said in a statement. "I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come." Zubimendi's arrival is a welcome reinforcement for Arsenal in midfield after Jorginho and Thomas Partey left at the end of their contracts last month. Renowned for his mobility, his deep-lying playmaking skills as well as his defensive nous, Zubimendi will give Arsenal's midfield a measure of steel while also controlling the tempo in the role of a number six. His arrival would potentially allow Declan Rice, Arsenal's player of the season, to play in an advanced role alongside skipper Martin Odegaard. With Spain, Zubimendi won the European Championship in 2024, coming on for the injured Rodri in the final to help secure the trophy, while he also scored in the Nations League final earlier this month when they lost to Portugal on penalties. Getting Zubimendi on board early would also give Arteta time to work with him in pre-season ahead of a tough opening spell in the Premier League next season. Arsenal play Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United in their first six games of the campaign. ($1 = 0.8490 euros)
