Targeted subsidy helps prevent RM40mil diesel loss to smuggling
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said enforcement data has shown a steady decline in such cases since the mechanism was introduced.
In 2023, 992 cases were reported with seizures amounting to RM18.04 million. This dropped to 655 cases in 2024, involving RM17.14 million in seized fuel.
Between Jan 1 and July 8 this year, 261 cases were recorded, with seizures valued at RM5.24 million.
He said diesel is a scheduled controlled item under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and is subject to strict regulation.
"Various measures have been implemented by the ministry to combat smuggling and misappropriation.
"These include strengthening governance, maintaining continuous oversight of the sale and distribution of subsidised controlled items, and conducting joint enforcement operations with other agencies at the border, such as the police, the Customs Department, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and Road Transport Department.
"The government's targeted diesel subsidy mechanism has proven effective in addressing issues of misappropriation and smuggling, as evidenced by the declining number of recorded cases," he said.

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is investigating a viral video showing a luxury vehicle bearing a Singaporean registration number plate refuelling with RON95 petrol at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri. Its director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, said an investigation was underway following the widespread sharing of the image on social media since yesterday. "We are aware of the image showing a foreign-registered vehicle, believed to belong to a Singaporean national, refuelling with RON95 petrol at a petrol station in Johor Baru. "A thorough investigation is being conducted to identify the location of the station involved and determine whether there has been a breach of existing regulations," she said when contacted today. Earlier, a photo went viral on social media showing the owner of a luxury vehicle with a Singaporean number plate allegedly filling a large plastic bottle with RON95 at a petrol station in Iskandar Puteri. The vehicle owner was also allegedly seen refuelling the vehicle with RON95 before proceeding to fill the same petrol into the plastic bottle. Lilis Saslinda said the ban on the sale of RON95 petrol to foreign-registered vehicles remains in force. Any breach may result in stern action under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. "If the investigation confirms any offence, appropriate action will be taken against the parties involved, including the petrol station operator if found to be negligent or complicit," she said. Lilis Saslinda reminded all petrol station operators to strictly adhere to government directives and guidelines regarding the sale of subsidised fuel. Those who may have witnessed any violations involving the sale of RON95 petrol to foreign vehicles may assist Johor authorities in further investigations.

Centralised price system to boost transparency

PENAMPANG: The Government will develop a centralised Price and Supply Repository System to monitor price trends and prevent manipulative practices in the market, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali. He said the system, to be introduced under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will provide a transparent data platform to detect abnormal price movements and support enforcement action against profiteering and cartel-like behaviour. 'This is a proactive step toward ensuring fairer market practices and greater price transparency across the supply chain, especially for essential goods,' he told reporters after officiating the Seminar Kenegaraan Malaysia Madani: Rancakkan Madani Sabah at ITTC Penampang. According to Armizan, the repository system will consolidate real-time information on pricing, supply volumes, and distribution to assist both consumers and regulators in making informed decisions. 'Through this system, enforcement agencies will be able to act more swiftly and decisively using data-driven evidence. It's a game-changer in combating unethical manipulation and protecting consumer interests,' he said. He added that the system will be developed through inter-ministerial cooperation and partnerships with industry players, including suppliers, retailers, and logistics operators. 13MP: Ministry to develop price and supply repository system
PENAMPANG: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will develop a Price and Supply Repository System during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Its minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, said the system would enable the government to monitor prices and supply comprehensively from producers and wholesalers to retailers and consumers. "With this supply and pricing data chain, the government can monitor more effectively and detect manipulation by middlemen who inflate prices. "The ministry will collaborate with various ministries, including the Economy Ministry and the Finance Ministry," he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Madani Nationhood Seminar organised by Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) here today. Armizan said the system will not only strengthen the food supply chain but also help detect exactly where price hikes or manipulation occur within the distribution process. At the same time, a study on the factors behind price differences in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan was launched this year. A separate Price Stability Committee has been established for each state. He said that the committee, co-chaired by himself and Sabah Community Development and People's Well-being Minister, Datuk James Ratib, will evaluate five key items in Sabah, including chicken prices. Armizan also said a preliminary report had already been presented by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for Sabah and Labuan, while Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is conducting the study for Sarawak. "UMS has proposed five essential items that can be addressed in the short term to solve the issue. "We will examine their initial findings before proceeding to the second phase of the study," he said. – Bernama
