Prison inmates' spirit shines at Cherlapally as annual sports and cultural meet ends on a high note
Organised by the Telangana Department of Prisons & Correctional Services, the event brought together prisoners from Cherlapally, Chanchalguda, the Hyderabad Prison Range and Warangal Prison Range, grouped into four platoons of 55 members each. The meet, running from May 9 to 11, blended athleticism with artistry and aimed to provide inmates with a structured platform for reinvention and reintegration.
The closing ceremony was headlined by Minister for IT, Industries, and Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu with legislators Patnam Mahender Reddy and Bandari Laxma Reddy, and corporator Bonthu Sridevi in attendance.
In his address, the Minister commended prison authorities for transforming jails into 'centres of reform and rehabilitation' and applauded Director General of Prisons Soumya Mishra for spearheading initiatives that focus on the welfare and reform of inmates. He noted that while many prisoners were there due to unfortunate turns in life, they are now actively working towards becoming better citizens.
A key highlight of the Minister's speech was the praise lavished on products made by prison industries, ranging from soaps to steel furniture, that he claimed could rival multinational brands in quality. The Karimnagar Fuel Outlet run by inmates also earned a special mention for its honesty and high sales figures.
Participants trained for two months ahead of the event, with special diets rich in protein to keep them fighting fit.
Events included cricket, volleyball, kabaddi, athletics, chess, carrom and badminton, alongside cultural programmes such as singing, dancing, skits, mimicry, musical performance and visual arts.
The Central Prison at Cherlapally dominated the scoreboard, bagging six golds and three silvers to clinch the overall championship. Central Prison, Hyderabad, followed with four golds and one silver. Cherlapally also took home the 'Best Team in Parade' title.
Ms.Mishra, in her closing remarks, thanked prison staff, participants and guests, and reiterated the department's commitment to reform-based prison management.

The former officer has been directed to appear for questioning at the SIT office in Vijayawada on Friday. Investigators intend to question Dr Bhargava regarding specific government orders, administrative clearances, and his alleged role in enabling preferential treatment for certain private liquor syndicates. It is suspected that the previous regime fostered a monopoly in the liquor business, leading to artificial price inflation, restricted brand access, and suspected kickbacks involving bureaucrats and political figures. The SIT's probe has reportedly uncovered that Dr Bhargava, despite being a senior bureaucrat, may have overlooked widespread irregularities and the unchecked influence of Raj Kesireddy (A-1), the primary accused in the scam, who is believed to have effectively controlled the Excise Department. Allegations also include that distilleries without valid licences were granted supply contracts without proper objections from Dr Bhargava. Furthermore, the SIT is investigating the unauthorised appointment of a woman named Anusha to the MIS (Management Information System) division, who allegedly relayed daily liquor sales data to facilitate kickback collection, with questions raised about why Dr Bhargava did not intervene despite being aware of the misuse. This is not the first instance of high-ranking officials coming under the SIT's scrutiny in this multi-crore scam, which reportedly involved kickbacks amounting to nearly Rs 3,500 crore siphoned off over five years. The investigation, which has already seen the questioning of former excise staff and senior officials, is expected to widen further as more layers of the alleged scam unravel.

Last Updated: At a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, MPs urged the government to enhance financial and digital literacy campaigns in smaller towns and villages Amid growing concerns over rising cyber fraud —particularly in rural parts of the country—the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to examine the situation. Officials from key ministries, including Finance, Electronics & IT, Telecommunications, and regulatory agencies like TRAI and CERT-In, briefed the panel on the current landscape and preventive measures in place. The meeting follows a major CBI-led probe that uncovered 8.5 lakh suspicious bank accounts across 743 branches, triggering nationwide raids and the arrest of 10 individuals last week. The incident raised fresh concerns about the scale and reach of cybercrime. However, government officials presenting before the committee maintained that cyber fraud was on the decline. Officials from the Department of Financial Services (DFS), under the Ministry of Finance, claimed that only 9 paisa is lost to fraud in every Rs 10,000 of digital transactions—figures they described as indicative of a low fraud rate. This assessment did not sit well with several MPs, who questioned whether these statistics reflected the ground realities, especially in rural areas. 'Most rural users are digitally and financially illiterate. Meanwhile, in urban areas, even those who are well-educated often fall victim to scams," one MP said. 'We cannot generalise based on a few case studies or averages." Lawmakers cutting across party lines urged the government to enhance financial and digital literacy campaigns in smaller towns and villages. They highlighted the widespread use of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) systems for schemes targeting farmers, women, and low-income households, pointing out that these schemes often reach beneficiaries who lack the digital know-how to detect or report fraud. 'More than 70% of India's population lives in rural India. DBT and Jan Dhan are excellent initiatives, but they need to be supported by proper awareness and redressal mechanisms," National Democratic Alliance (NDA) member Krishna Prasad from the TDP stressed, say sources. Another MP from the opposition added, 'While digital coverage under government schemes is nearly 100%, awareness levels remain dismally low. How do we expect people to protect themselves?" In response, officials said efforts were underway to enhance cybersecurity infrastructure. These included additional firewalls, better grievance redressal systems, and interagency coordination. Some members raised deeper questions about systemic vulnerabilities. 'If all precautions are being taken, how do cases like Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi still happen?" an opposition MP asked, pointing to high-profile financial crimes that have dented public trust. 'Despite the government calling the kind of frauds happening as small, for a rural area, even a few paisa lost is money lost. We have seen such episodes and the ripple effect they can have, even on TV shows and OTT. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the common man's interest and every penny that they are entrusting the bank with," a member is said to have stated during the meeting. The two-day discussion titled 'Cyber Crime—Ramifications, Protection and Prevention" is being chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal. Thursday's session will include presentations from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and National Investigation Agency (NIA), among others. Members are expected to ask questions on various aspects of international fraud in cyberspace and what the government is doing to protect the common man, especially with the risk of this money being used for anti-national activities. Sigachi chemical factory explosion toll mounts to 36
SANGAREDDY: A day after the catastrophic explosion at the Sigachi chemical factory in Sangareddy district, the death toll rose to 36, with 13 bodies identified as of Tuesday night. Grief-stricken families continued to camp outside hospitals and mortuaries, clinging to fading hopes as 16 people remain missing, and several bodies were charred beyond recognition. The atmosphere is sombre, pierced only by the wails of loved ones desperate for answers. For many waiting near the factory gates, no compensation can fill the void left by those feared lost forever. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy visited the site on Tuesday, offering words of solace to the bereaved families. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore to the kin of each deceased worker. Visibly angered, the chief minister directed that the factory's managing director be made to meet either the Industries minister or the Health minister. He asserted that responsibility would be fixed and stern action taken against those found guilty. Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu, who accompanied the CM, expressed outrage at the absence of company management even 24 hours after the tragedy. 'The entire state administration is here to support the grieving families, but not a single senior official from the company has shown up. This will not be taken lightly,' he warned. Though rescue operations are nearly complete, officials have recovered only mangled body parts, making identification difficult. According to one official, removing the debris has become a Herculean task, and identification could take several more days.
