Farewell, Jose Riveiro: Five former Orlando Pirates coaches who ended up in North Africa
Outgoing Orlando Pirates' coach Jose Riveiro has been tight-lipped on his next move, citing confidentiality as the main reason for not opening up at the moment.
However, rumours have been rife that he's put pen to paper on a two-year deal with African and Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly.
And so, should that eventually be the case, he'll join a list of coaches who jumped the Sea Robbers' ship and landed in north Africa at some point.
That's why below, we go down memory lane and look at five coaches who had impressive stints at Pirates before ending up in North Africa...
Fadlu Davids (August 2021 - June 2022)
Davids was appointed as the co-coach of Pirates alongside Mandla Ncikazi when Josef Zinnbaber left the club.
The duo huffed and puffed at the helm, reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final in which they lost to Morocco based side RS Berkane in Nigeria.
That loss and sixth place finish resulted in Davids leaving the club to reunite with Zinnbauer, at Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia, and then in Morocco at Raja Casablanca, as an assistant.
Davids succeeded at Raja, winning the Botola Pro 1 League after an 'invincible' season and the Throne Cup, before he joined Simba as the head coach this season.
Josef Zinnbauer (December 2019 - July 2021)
Zinnabuer spent one-and-a-half seasons at Pirates, guiding the team to the MTN8 crown, back-to-back third-place finishes in the Premiership.
After leaving Pirates, he landed at Moscow in 2023 where he worked alongside Davids who was his assistant.
But it was last season at Raja in which the pair flourished. Zinnbauer is currently on the books of Algeria based side JS Kabylie after leaving Al-Wehda at the end of last year.
Rulani Mokwena (August 2017 - December 2019)
Mokwena realised a childhood dream when he joined Pirates as Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic's assistant, having his paternal bloodline made a name for themselves at the club.
His two seasons, alongside Sredojevic, could only yield-back-to-back second place finishes in the league before Mokwena drowned as an interim coach late in 2019.
He eventually left Pirates during the breakthrough of Covid-19 in 2020, resurfacing at Mamelodi Sundowns in which he won trophies as an assistant, co-coach and head coach.
After being sacked by the club late last year, Mokwena joined Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca this season. But he's already been released due to inconsistency.
Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic (July 2017 - August 2019)
After Pirates disappointingly finished outside the Top 8 in 2017, Pirates recalled Sredojevic for his second spell at the club following his first stint in 2006 - 2007.
The Serbia born coach arrived at the club promising to wake up a sleeping giant as he was firstly a staunch Pirates supporter before a coach.
But his second spell didn't bear immediate effect as he could only lead the team to second place finishes, alongside Mokwena who had strong family ties with the ties.
Sredojevic, though, left after just one game into his third season, joining Egyptian giants Zamalek. But that was short-lived. He is currently club-less.
Ruud Krol (June 2008 - June 2011)
Krol spent three seasons at Pirates, winning a treble in his third and last campaign - the MTN8, Premiership, Nedbank Cup.
His departure caught many by surprise given all that he had achieved. But he wasn't without suitors, landing jobs in north Africa at CS Sfaxien, the Tunisia national team, Esperance, Raja, and Club Africain.

Orlando Pirates legend's words to Sipho Mbule
Much-loved for his technical touch and passing range, Orlando Pirates have taken a clear risk with the signing of Sipho Mbule. The 27-year-old from Bethlehem, Free State, was available on a free transfer after Mamelodi Sundowns opted against a contract renewal on his expired deal. According to reports, Mbule lost his place at Sundowns after he had reported for training under the influence of alcohol. Khanye: Kaizer Chiefs signed the wrong player Sipho Mbule during his loan spell at Sekhukhune United from Mamelodi Sundowns. Image: Sowetan 'MasterChef needs to understand that he is not at Pirates because they pity him, he is here because of his unmatched talent,' the former Orlando Pirates midfielder told Kick Off . Why Orlando Pirates gave the job to Ouaddou 'Our chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, is a parent and a father figure; he has always provided players with a platform to perform. 'Mbule is not the first player to receive such an opportunity from the chairman. I had my share of mischief as well. Before me, there were other troublesome players like Metroblitz (Mandla Sithole) and Tso (Ernest Makhanya), and more. 'So what Sipho must realize is that he is not the first special case to join Pirates. With Dr. Khoza, he not only has a father figure but also a man who understands the challenges faced by young black boys. ORLANDO PIRATES WEIGHT AND HISTORY 'I asked Sipho Mbule what he would like to be remembered for by the club's spiritual owners. I am genuinely excited about Mbule's signing,' Moloi continued. 'This is the first time I am revealing this, but I feel I should share it. Before the friendly game against Arsenal, Pirates played a match where I arrived at camp at 2 a.m. with a teammate, whose name I won't mention, and we were not in good condition. 'I told Sipho yesterday, 'Forget what people are saying about you. They know the talent you possess, and your discipline will improve.' I encouraged him to focus on making the spiritual owners proud,' the former Orlando Pirates midfielder added. 'When I first met him yesterday, he seemed reserved, but after our conversation, he was smiling and laughing. Instead of saying to him, 'Man, stay away from the bottle!', I helped him understand that he was at home at Pirates. 'After that, I had a chance to escape the pressures of South African football. Few people know that I was heading in Sipho Mbule's direction, but thanks to the role the chairman played in my life, I managed to bounce back and help Pirates win the league title in 1994,' Moloi concluded. Why Orlando Pirates gave the job to Ouaddou
Orlando Pirates supporters have finally met the club's new tactician. Abdeslam Ouaddou has replaced Jose Riviero as the head coach. The 46-year-old Moroccan made his name in Mzansi while coaching Marumo Gallants late last season. He saved the club's top-flight status in 12 games. What were the exact reasons for making him Riveiro's successor? Pictures spotted: New African midfielder at Orlando Pirates Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza briefs the media. Image: @officialpsl/X According to this report, Ouaddou fully understands the way Orlando Pirates want to play football. 'The perspective that I heard was the fact that he knows how Pirates want to play you know, first and foremost,' a source told Soccer Laduma . Pictures spotted: New Orlando Pirates superstar 'Orlando Pirates always when they look at the CVs, they go for someone who's willing to play their style of play. 'And again Pirates play CAF Champions League, in the Champions League you cannot sit on the bench if you don't have a CAF A Licence and coach Ouaddou has got a UEFA Pro Licence. 'So it's much easier. That's one of the things that gave him an upper hand when it comes other coaches, especially comparing locally,' the insider added. He has Toure qualities, says Haskins of Orlando Pirates' Mbule transfer
The mercurial Sipho Mbule signed on with Orlando Pirates as a free transfer earlier this month. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Arguably the most high-profile signing of the current transfer window ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season is that of Sipho Mbule by Orlando Pirates. The highly rated midfielder joins the Buccaneers on a free transfer, having been released by Mamelodi Sundowns following a troubled loan spell at Sekhukhune United. Often described as a ball genius, a superstar, a master, Mbule has yet to fully live up to those lofty labels, largely due to off-field misdemeanours that have limited his time on the pitch. That a player such as Teboho Mokoena has gone on to become a continental star — despite having once been considered the lesser talent when the pair were at SuperSport United — underscores Mbule's failure to fulfil his potential. Now that he has joined Pirates, many believe he may finally turn a corner, with the club renowned for managing so-called "bad boys" and helping them get back on track. Orlando Pirates is pleased to welcome Sipho Mbule to the Club. ⚫⚪🔴⭐#OrlandoPirates #OnceAlways — Orlando Pirates (@orlandopirates) June 24, 2025 Video Player is loading. 'I think this is a match made in heaven,' the former Jomo Cosmos midfielder told Independent Media. 'I think he'll fit into the Pirates set-up like a hand in a glove. We could see the best of Sipho Mbule this coming season. This is his time to shine. It's really up to him — the ball is in his court.' Haskins says this with confidence, knowing that Pirates can provide the right environment for Mbule to flourish. 'The management at Pirates understands how to handle the South African footballer and the challenges that come with it. With their experience, the chairman (Irvin Khoza) and his sons know how to navigate such situations, and I'm sure they would not have taken this decision lightly. 'They would have put down a clear plan on how to take care of Sipho Mbule. They know the challenges he comes with, and they won't be surprised by anything.' Haskins, who also played for the now-defunct Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits, believes Mbule is one of the finest players the country has produced in years — and says it has pained him to see such talent underutilised. 'I told him, 'you're cheating us. You've not given us your very best.' "He is a complete player — a very rare gem. Most players are either good going forward but can't defend, or vice versa. But he's the complete package. 'He can go both ways — he can defend, and he's superb offensively. He's deceptively quick and hard to push off the ball. He's intelligent and uses space well. And he can score goals — oh yes, he definitely knows how to score.
