Hasty school launch under scrutiny
The government is moving at full speed to prepare for the launch of President Prabowo Subianto 's flagship education initiative, Sekolah Rakyat (community school), which aims to provide free boarding school education to underprivileged children from elementary to secondary levels.
With the programme scheduled to open in July, just months after its announcement, the focus has been on renovating state-owned buildings as well as recruiting teachers and support staff to meet the tight timeline.
However, as the Public Works Ministry scrambles to retrofit dozens of facilities and the Social Affairs Ministry accelerates staffing efforts, critics warn that the programme's foundation remains shaky, with key questions about planning, quality and inclusivity left unanswered. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf says the new schools for the programme will provide facilities on a par with top-tier institutions without tests on academic performance or IQ, which often restrict access to quality education.
'The only requirement to enter a Sekolah Rakyat is that the children come from poor families and have a willingness to learn,' Saifullah said on Wednesday on the ministry's website.
But many are skeptical that the government's timeline allows for the delivery of meaningful quality education or a thorough assessment of students' needs.
The Public Works Ministry began 65 renovation projects in early May, followed by another 35 scheduled projects, which aim to convert buildings managed by the Social Affairs Ministry or the local government into school facilities.
But the renovation drive sparked a public backlash last week after it displaced visually impaired students from a century-old special needs school to make way for the programme.
The school is located in a rehabilitation centre run by the Social Affairs Ministry in Bandung, West Java, part of which is being converted into a community school.
In response to the criticism, the government has pledged to return the students to the former school once renovations are complete.
Meanwhile, an online recruitment has been launched to select principals from a pool of 160.
The new programme would use a three-stage curriculum framework geared toward developing the unique talents of students.
The first stage begins in June, when students arrive, and is designed to evaluate their physical fitness and health, as well as academic abilities.
The second stage begins when the school year starts in July, with all students following the national curriculum.
The third stage runs concurrently with a special curriculum for evening classes which focuses on character development, religious and civic values, digital literacy and essential life skills. — The Jakarta Post/ANN

According to the report he received, the current capacity generated at the facility stands at 15 gigawatts. However, to achieve full energy independence, Indonesia will need around 100 gigawatts. "This means we need to multiply projects like this, and I believe our nation is capable of doing so,' Prabowo stated. The electric vehicle battery industry project is a collaboration between the state-owned mining company ANTAM, the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and a consortium of CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL). The project covers upstream to downstream processing and consists of six sub-projects, five of which are located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, and one in Karawang. As part of the National Strategic Projects (PSN), the project investment totals US$5.9 billion and covers an area of 3,023 hectares. Indonesia begins $5.9 bn EV battery project despite environment fears
JAKARTA: Indonesia broke ground Sunday on a $5.9 billion megaproject for EV battery production backed by Chinese giant CATL, despite NGOs raising concerns over a lack of environmental guarantees. Indonesia is the world's largest nickel producer and it is trying to capitalise on its vast reserves, with a 2020 export ban spurring a domestic industrial boom of the key metal used in EV batteries and stainless steel. The EV battery project will include a $4.7 billion investment on the eastern island of Halmahera and a $1.2 billion investment in West Java, energy minister Bahlil Lahadalia said in a speech alongside President Prabowo Subianto. 'According to my calculation, it won't take long, in probably between five to six years we will be able to reach energy self-sufficiency,' Prabowo said at a groundbreaking ceremony in Karawang, West Java. Bahlil said the Halmahera complex will focus on mining, smelting and production of cathodes which are a key component in rechargeable batteries. The West Java complex will focus on battery cell production, the minister said. The two politicians did not say when the megaproject was slated to be operational, but Indonesian officials have said a CATL plant in Halmahera would open in March next year. Alongside CATL, the Halmahera complex is backed by China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Indonesia's state-owned Antam. Climate Rights International (CRI) and Greenpeace Indonesia this week issued a call for greater assurances from Jakarta that measures were in place to protect the surrounding environment at the bigger complex in eastern Halmahera. Environmental group Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam) said in a statement Saturday that Jakarta was 'chasing vague economic growth while consciously ignoring the people's scream' to end damage to the environment and residents' livelihoods. Halmahera, a once-pristine island in the Maluku archipelago, has seen environmental damage increase as operations have grown at a large industrial park that hosts the world's largest nickel mine. A CRI report this month warned the Indonesian government was allowing environmental damage to go unchecked around the Weda Bay mine and the industrial park that hosts it. An AFP report last month detailed how the home of the nomadic Hongana Manyawa tribe was being eaten away by mining operations there.

Malaysia, Indonesia back Palestinian statehood, condemn Israeli aggression
JAKARTA, June 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto share a common aspiration to see peace achieved, not only between Israel and Iran, but across the entire Middle East. Expressing relief over the recent temporary ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Anwar nevertheless stressed that Malaysia and Indonesia strongly condemn Israel's continued atrocities, which have resulted in genocide in Gaza, Palestine. He emphasised that Malaysia has consistently voiced strong opposition to Israel's aggression and violations against Iran, while firmly supporting Iran's right to defend its sovereignty and dignity. 'But importantly, as President Prabowo did mention, we share a common desire for peace - not just between Iran and Israel, but across the entire Middle East,' said Anwar, expressing hope that Palestine will one day become an independent and sovereign state.
