Two men from Hyderabad were duped of over ₹15 lakh in separate cyber fraud cases.
In the first case, a 24-year-old man from Musheerabad lost ₹13.42 lakh in an online betting investment scam after being contacted by a woman posing as a representative of a platform called, Sapphire Betting Casino. The fraudster, identifying herself as Aarya, reached out to the victim via WhatsApp on July 8, enticing him with promises of high returns.
Over a series of calls, video demonstrations and messages shared through Instagram, she built the illusion of a legitimate investment opportunity.
Under continuous psychological manipulation and pressure, the victim began by transferring ₹10,000 through UPI, but continued investing as he was shown fake profit updates. The total amount lost across multiple transactions eventually reached ₹13,42,778. Realising he was duped, the victim approached the cybercrime wing of the Hyderabad police.
In a separate incident, a 34-year-old resident of Secunderabad was defrauded of ₹1.72 lakh after he downloaded a malicious apk file sent to him via WhatsApp. The file, rta challan.apk, appeared to be a legitimate app to check traffic challans. After installing it and entering personal details, the victim's phone was compromised. On July 18, he noticed unauthorised debits from his HDFC bank account and discovered that his mobile had been remotely accessed, with all calls diverted to an unknown number.
Though he managed to disable the call forwarding and secure his device, ₹1,72,625 had already been withdrawn by the time he regained control. The matter was reported to the national cybercrime helpline.
Investigations in both the cases are under way.

Our goal is to cut daily travel time of commuters: Top cop

Belagavi: The volume of fines collected from traffic violators is not a measure of our efficiency. For me, reducing public travel time is the real priority, said Bhushan Borase, commissioner of Belagavi City police. Speaking at a media interaction organised by Belagavi Print Media Association at Vartha Bhavan on Wednesday, Borase said it's traffic regulation and not revenue collection that is his focus. Since taking charge a month ago, he redirected 90% of traffic police from fine collection duties to enforcement and traffic management. "The govt hasn't given us any targets for fine collection. If we can save 10 minutes daily of a citizen's travel time, that's significant, and that's our goal," he added. Borase also highlighted changes brought to the fine collection process for the convenience of the public. "Now, violators receive a message on WhatsApp followed by a formal notice. Earlier, they had to visit police stations to pay fines. Now, they can pay at Belagavi One centres," he said. Infra and traffic flow The commissioner cited potholes as a major cause of traffic slowdown in Belagavi. "The city has roads maintained by the NHAI, PWD, BCC, and Cantonment Board. We have written to all relevant authorities to urgently address the issue and are awaiting responses," Borase stated. He also revealed that nearly 4,000 trucks move in and out of the city daily. To decongest the roads, police have now fixed specific timings for truck movement, especially during peak hours. Borase said the city is collaborating with the Bengaluru police consultancy service to conduct a comprehensive traffic survey for short, medium, and long-term planning. "We are also consulting bus, truck, and auto drivers before implementing any new measures," the commissioner noted. Meanwhile, the officer urged people to share their suggestions and feedback on: "The department is focusing on increasing the number of paid parking areas across the city." Narcotics crackdown Addressing the growing concern of drug abuse in Belagavi, Borase admitted that the efforts so far are inadequate. "What we are doing is not even 1%. When both buyer and seller are in agreement, it becomes difficult to trace. If we raid one place, they shift to another. Today, transactions happen via the darknet and e-commerce sites. There is a long way to go," he said.

Fake App, Fake Profit: Pilot Loses Rs 3.16 Crore In Share Market Investment Fraud

Mumbai: A 56-year-old pilot was allegedly cheated of Rs 3.16 crore by cyber fraudsters under the guise of offering attractive returns in share trading, Mumbai Police said on Wednesday. The scam unfolded after the pilot watched videos on share market investments on a YouTube channel he had subscribed to. "After watching the videos in May, the pilot received a call from a woman on WhatsApp. She introduced herself as an assistant mentor and claimed to be working with SMC Global Securities," a police official said. The pilot was then added to a WhatsApp group and started receiving investment tips. After some days, the woman asked him to download the SMC Global Securities app. He subsequently invested in shares as per the tips. He deposited over Rs 3.16 crore in various bank accounts shared by the woman until July 11, the police official said. The pilot's wife had downloaded the app and found that her investment generated Rs 6.73 crore profit, while the profit in her husband's account showed Rs 15.82 crore. On July 11, the pilot, who works with Air India, contacted the company as he wanted to withdraw the money. The call was attended by an 'official' of the securities company who asked him to deposit an additional 10 per cent. The pilot realised that he was being taken for a ride and lodged a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and approached West Region Cyber Police Station on July 19, the official said. Police registered a case against unidentified cyber fraudsters under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Varanasi: A 57-year-old medical practitioner in Varanasi fell victim to extortion after seeking the services of a gay individual through an app, resulting in financial loss of Rs 8 lakh. Police said that the doctor checked into a hotel on July 20 and contacted a man via an app, inviting him to the room. The man arrived with beer and other items. After consuming beer, the doctor removed his clothes and requested the accused to do the same. However, he clicked nude photos and videos of the doctor. He tried to thrash the doctor and told him that homosexual practice at his age in the holy city was not fair. The accused threatened the doctor that he would send his photos to his acquaintances and relatives if he did not transfer money to his bank account. In the span of two days, the accused transferred Rs 8 lakh to the account of the accused. Later, the doctor filed an FIR in this connection.
