Court declares fashion designer Jovian Mandagie bankrupt after failing to repay RM5.3m verbal loan to construction firm
The Star reported that the court granted the bankruptcy order after Cekap Air Sdn Bhd filed a creditor's petition over Jovian's failure to settle RM5,284,340.66, including interest, for a loan given in 2022.
'Jovian did file several applications to stay and strike out the bankruptcy notice and petition that was filed against him but they were dismissed by the court,' said the company's lawyer, Siti Nur Athirazatti Rohizad.
Cekap Air claimed the loan was extended verbally on February 25, 2022, based on a personal acquaintance between its director Yong Zhen Wei and Jovian, with the expectation that it would be repaid within 12 months.
'Furthermore, there was no reason for the plaintiff (Cekap Air) to doubt the defendant (Jovian) as the latter had several other businesses and was the [then] son-in-law of the former prime minister,' the company said in its statement of claim.
Jovian was married to Nina Ismail Sabri, daughter of former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, on December 11, 2013, but the couple divorced in 2024.
The company alleged that Jovian failed, refused, or neglected to repay the loan, resulting in financial losses and unjust enrichment.
A summary judgment was issued by the High Court on April 2, 2024, ordering Jovian to repay the amount, but he did not comply.
The bankruptcy petition followed Jovian's failure to honour the court's judgment, according to court documents.
His appeal against the summary judgment is scheduled to be heard at the Court of Appeal on September 15.

(AKPS pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) detained two enforcement officers at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Bahru last night. The agency said the two men were suspected of being involved in the 'flying passport' activity. 'The arrests followed a surveillance operation that began at 3pm on the same day targeting the team on duty. 'At around 9pm, we made the second arrest after our compliance unit detected a data error clearance action involving a problematic visitor entry, carried out using the ID of a supervisor stationed in the motorcycle zone. 'A search at the vehicle zone counter led to the discovery of RM2,800 in cash and two mobile phones in the officer's possession,' it said The unit also found 11 passports belonging to Chinese nationals, and three Indonesian passports hidden inside a black bag above the ceiling of a different counter. 'Two more mobile phones were found and seized by our officers after a search at the motorcycle zone supervisor counter, where an on-duty supervisor was present,' it said. RM1.9t in IPOs: Bursa Malaysia tops SE Asia's capital market surge in H1 2025, says CEO
KAMPAR, July 26 — Bursa Malaysia has maintained its lead position in initial public offering (IPO) activities in South-east Asia, recording a market value exceeding RM1.9 trillion in the first half of 2025. Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed said this achievement reflects the strength of the country's capital market and also the business community's confidence in Bursa Malaysia as a partner for long-term growth. 'Retail investors' participation remains strong and continues to be a major contributor to the country's equity market. The average daily trading value (ADV) of retail investors remains stable at about RM450 million, in line with pre-Covid-19 levels, as of the middle of this year,' he said in his speech at the 2025 Perak Stock Carnival at Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR) here today. Fad'l added that there are more than 113,000, or eight per cent of active retail investors in Perak, out of a total of 1.4 million in Malaysia, with nearly 6,000 new Central Depository System (CDS) accounts opened as of the middle of this year. He said Perak's potential for further growth in the capital market is very high with its 2.5 million population. 'However, despite these impressive figures, our priority is to build retail investors who are knowledgeable, responsible and confident about their investments,' he said. Bursa Malaysia also emphasised the need to raise awareness about the growing issue of investment fraud, with the police reporting more than 2,000 cases in the first quarter of this year, he said. The exchange is intensifying financial literacy programmes such as Sens-Ability, and providing various educational materials for new and experienced investors as a preventive measure, he said. 'Bursa Malaysia also introduced investment products like BR Capital, Bursa Gold Dinar, and MyBursa to cater to various investor segments. 'We encourage everyone present to leverage the knowledge-sharing sessions and opportunities provided throughout this carnival to make informed and wise investment decisions,' he added. The carnival, held for the first time in Perak, is part of a series of programmes that started in 2022, after previous events in Pahang, Terengganu and Perlis to strengthen investment literacy among the public. Perak's Tourism, Industry, Investment, and Corridor Development committee chairman Loh Sze Yee and UTAR research and commercialisation division vice-president Prof Dr Zuraidah Abd Manaf were also present at the event. — Bernama
