Andy Roddick backs Wimbledon contender to become 'one of the best players ever'

Andy Roddick has predicted the line-up of the Wimbledon final and backed Jannik Sinner to become 'one of the best players of all time'. World number one Sinner was two sets down in his fourth-round match with Grigor Dimitrov when the Bulgarian was forced to retire through injury. Sinner, 23, was widely praised for the way he reacted to Dimitrov's heartbreaking injury blow, immediately checking on his opponent and then helping him pack his tennis back and leave the court. The three-time Grand Slam champion looked on course for a disappointing defeat as he failed to produce his best form on Centre Court while also struggling with an elbow injury. But a fortuitous bye to the quarters means Sinner is just three wins away from his maiden Wimbledon title and the Italian faces American Ben Shelton next. Sinner's unconvincing performance against Dimitrov would have raised Shelton's hopes of reaching a third Grand Slam semi-final but Roddick is still backing the world number one to progress. 'Even with Dimitrov exposing Sinner a little bit in that match it's still going to be tough for Shelton,' he said on his podcast Served. 'Two weeks ago I would have given Ben no chance, now he's got a puncher's chance. 'I can't say he's going to beat Jannik in three out of five sets in a Grand Slam yet. There's a lot of positives for Ben, I still think Sinner gets through but I've been so impressed the progress of Ben. 'Hopefully that injury to Sinner is just a bruise, it's clearly not a tear because he was still serving 130mph. 'I'm going with Sinner, I've been super pumped with Ben but I'm not going to let two bad sets erase a guy who's going to be one of the best of all time. Quarter-finals Taylor Fritz v Karen Khachanov Cameron Norrie v Carlos Alcaraz Jannik Sinner v Ben Shelton Flavio Cobolli v Novak Djokovic Semi-finals Taylor Fritz v Carlos Alcaraz Jannik Sinner v Novak Djokovic Final Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic 'He hasn't been serving great and is still missing some shots but he's still Sinner, the number one player in the world.' Elsewhere on the men's side of the draw, three-time Wimbledon finalist Roddick expects two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to end British star Cameron Norrie's run. Former US Open champion Roddick in fact expects Alcaraz to go all the way and beat Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. 'I'm going with Novak in that quarter-final,' Roddick said ahead of the 38-year-old's quarter-final against Flavio Cobolli. 'I've still got Novak reaching the final. 'Taylor Fritz has looked really professional too. The guy plays a lot of tennis and his thing of playing a week before a slam is strange for a top player. 'I like him over Karen Khachanov. We often overlook Khachanov and he's been playing well, but I'm still backing Fritz. More Trending 'Props to Cam Norrie, he just knows how to get wins and knows the game. He's got a really high tennis IQ but I'm going to take Carlos Alcaraz there. 'I'm predicting Carlos vs Fritz semi on that side and I like Carlos just because he's Carlos, it's nothing against Taylor. 'The variety of Carlos can get Fritz moving and that's not his expertise. The variety could cause him some stress and there's no one on the planet right now that's capable of more variety than Alcaraz. 'I'm predicting a Carlos-Novak final – which I said at the start of the tournament actually – and I still have Alcaraz winning this tennis tournament.' Tennis pro Jannik Sinner's controversial doping ban and famous ex girlfriend

Jannik Sinner is the top seed at Wimbledon and one of the favourites to win the tournament, but he was previously suspended from the sport after failing two drug tests Tennis star Jannik Sinner may be among the favourites to win Wimbledon, but he nearly missed out on playing in the tournament after a doping suspension earlier this year. The Italian world number one failed two drug tests in 2024, leading to a suspension from all tennis competitions between February 9 and May 4, 2025, following a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Sinner, 23, tested positive twice for clostebol - a banned anabolic steroid known to promote muscle growth. ‌ WADA accepted Sinner's explanation that the positive tests were the result of accidental contamination. According to the findings, his physiotherapist had treated a cut on Sinner's finger using a spray that unknowingly contained clostebol. ‌ While WADA concluded that Sinner had no intent to cheat, they held him accountable for his team's negligence, which led to his suspension. The case sparked controversy across the tennis world. Several players expressed concerns that Sinner may have received preferential treatment due to his high profile and access to elite legal representation - advantages not typically available to lower-ranked athletes. ‌ The initial announcement of the positive tests came in August 2024, when an independent tribunal revealed that Sinner had failed two drug tests during March 2024. While the tribunal also accepted his explanation of accidental contamination, they found Sinner bore 'no fault or negligence' and did not impose a ban at that time. Instead, the tribunal ordered that Sinner forfeit ranking points and prize money earned at the Indian Wells tournament that March. This prompted WADA to intervene and appeal the initial decision, resulting in Sinner receiving a three-month suspension following a negotiated agreement. However, WADA's ruling remained controversial, as Sinner was permitted to return in time to compete at the 2025 French Open. ‌ "It just seems a little bit too convenient"' former British number one Tim Henman said in February. "Having just won the [2025] Australian Open, to miss three months of the Tour and therefore to be eligible to play at Roland-Garros, the timing couldn't have been any better for Sinner, but I still think it leaves a pretty sour taste for the sport. "When you're dealing with drugs in sport it very much has to be black and white, it's binary, it's positive or negative, you're banned or you're not banned. "When you start reading words like settlement or agreement, it feels like there's been a negotiation and I don't think that will sit well with the player cohort and the fans of the sport." ‌ Away from the tennis court, attention has increasingly focused on Sinner's personal life, particularly his romantic relationships. Reports indicate that last month, while preparing for the Italian Open in Monte Carlo, Sinner was accompanied by Russian model Lara Leito. Italian publication Chi magazine published photos of the 23-year-old tennis star with the 31-year-old model at the Monte Carlo Country Club. ‌ Leito previously dated Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody for six years and has also been linked romantically to French actor Olivier Martinez. According to sources, Sinner and Leito were seen sharing a kiss and an embrace after she watched his training session from the sidelines. It comes Sinner's breakup with fellow tennis player Anastasia Kalinskaya in November, ending a seven-month relationship. Last month, Sinner confirmed he is currently single. 'There's a lot of attention,' he said in May. 'Also, off the court, I was surprised to see some pictures, but nothing serious. I'm not in a relationship!'
