Wiring appeared to plunge over 32% in early trade on Friday, July 18, showing sharply lower prices in investor demat accounts. But the steep drop was not a market rout, it was a technical adjustment following the companies' 1:2

s that took effect today, with stock prices recalibrating accordingly and no impact on the overall value of shareholder holdings.

Samvardhana Motherson shares began trading ex-bonus on Friday following the company's 1:2 bonus issue, its 11th such issue in the last three decades. For example, an investor holding 200 shares will be allotted 100
bonus shares
, increasing the total number of shares held to 300, with the per-share price adjusting proportionately.
On Thursday, July 17, the Samvardhana Motherson stock had closed at Rs 153.85 on the BSE. On Friday morning, it opened at Rs 104.65, a decline of around 32% on paper, reflecting the bonus adjustment. The stock was trading 0.3% higher by mid-morning.
This marks the 10th bonus issuance by Samvardhana Motherson since November 2000.

First bonus since demerger for Motherson Sumi Wiring
Motherson Sumi Wiring, the demerged entity of Samvardhana Motherson, also implemented a 1:2 bonus issue, its first since listing. The record date was also July 18.
Shares of Motherson Sumi Wiring closed at Rs 64.40 on Thursday and opened at Rs 43.70 on Friday, implying a 32% decline on paper, again, a direct outcome of the bonus adjustment. The stock was up 2.5% in early trade.
The bonus ratio entitles shareholders to one bonus share for every two shares held. For instance, an investor with 100 shares will receive 50 bonus shares, increasing their total holdings to 150.
No change in investment value
Although the per-share price appears to have dropped significantly on paper, investors have not lost any value. The total worth of their holdings remains unchanged as the number of shares increases to offset the reduced price.
For example, a shareholder holding 300 shares of Motherson Sumi Wiring at Rs 60 apiece, a total value of Rs 18,000, will now hold 450 shares priced at approximately Rs 40 each, maintaining the same overall investment value.

Credit card growth slows in June 2025, new additions drop at top banks

In signs that asset quality worries are yet to recede for India's credit card industry, some of the country's largest issuers saw significant drops in their new card additions in June 2025, data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed. The overall industry growth slipped into negative territory for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Kotak Mahindra Bank also saw a sharp drop of 286,000 cards, while RBL Bank lost over 47,000 cards and Axis Bank saw a decline of around 6,000. Live Events "We keep monitoring our portfolio and we believe that the quality of the book that we have built is quite stable. In case there are early signs of stress, we take proactive actions," Sandeep Batra, executive director at ICICI Bank, had said during the lender's post Q1 earnings media call. ICICI Bank had seen negative growth of over 31,000 credit cards in May as well. RBL Bank also has seen a consistent drop in its new card addition since it stopped sourcing from Bajaj Finance in November last year. "We have been consciously growing this (credit card) portfolio slower," said Jaideep Iyer, head of strategy at RBL Bank. "It's important that we continue to put a high threshold for new origination of cards both from asset quality as well as cross-sell standpoint to ensure that this becomes a meaningful customer acquisition tool for the bank rather than only a credit card acquisition tool." Analysts say banks are scouting for top quality customers to arrest future delinquency issues which is limiting growth. "Banks are cautiously growing their book and targeting only high quality customers, hence we are seeing a slowdown," said said Ashutosh Mishra, head, institutional equities research at Ashika Stock Brokin. "There is a RBI rule which directs banks to deactivate cards that have remained unused for 365 days or more, the period of declassify such cards has started again." In terms of banks that reported an increase in card base, HDFC Bank added 212,000 cards and SBI Cards 83,000 cards. The pace of additions slowed compared to previous months. They had added 274,000 cards and 126,000 cards, respectively, in May. Federal Bank and IDFC First Bank have been consistently adding new cards. In June, Federal Bank added more than 92,000 cards while IDFC First Bank added more than 70,000 cards. Total net new card issuance fell by 235 last month as total credit card base remained flat at 111.1 million. Lenders had added over 76,000 net new credit cards in May 2025 and 51,000 net new cards in June 2024.

First families of biz face higher tax on share sale profits

Indian promoters and several family offices using limited liability partnerships (LLPs) to own shares of companies, other securities, and invest in private equity and venture capital funds are in for a nasty surprise lurking in the new income tax (I-T) Bill. Such LLPs, which have emerged as a convenient investment vehicle over last decade, will have to shell out more tax on their profits from sale of securities if the new Bill is enacted in its present form. The tax rate on profits from sale of shares or other investments could rise from 12.5%—the existing tax applicable for long-term capital gains—to 18.5% for these investment entities. AMT is aimed at collecting taxes from non-corporate taxpayers like individuals, Hindu undivided families (HUFs), and LLPs who claim significant deductions to lower their tax outgo. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sleep Apnea Ruined My Life – Then I Found This Simple Trick Health Insight Undo Under the present tax regulations, if specified deductions claimed by an LLP—say, offering 30% tax on regular income like interest and rent and 12.5% tax on capital gains—lower its effective tax below 18.5%, then some of the claims are readjusted to recover a basic tax of 18.5% on its earnings. However, an LLP which claims no such deductions and functions as a pure holding entity with long-term capital gains as its only source of earnings, is not affected by AMT even though it pays only 12.5% tax. Also, individuals and HUFs earning less than `20 lakh are spared from AMT. Live Events Things could dramatically change in the coming days. An LLP, according to the new Bill, would be hit by AMT irrespective of whether it claims any deductions and how much it earns. Thus, many LLPs acting as pure investment outfits of the family or the promoter group and paying atax of 12.5% or maybe a little more, will have to shell out 18.5% of the money they make from sale of any investment. Sensing the impact it could have on influential groups, tax professionals are awaiting the final stand that lawmakers take and the extent to which the suggestions of a select committee are factored in before the Bill becomes an Act. According to Bhavin Shah, partner, PwC India, 'The select committee has acknowledged the potential unintended consequences that may arise if AMT is made applicable to non-corporate assessees who have not claimed specified exemptions. Suitable clarifications should be incorporated in this regard to provide certainty and reduce litigation on this unintended change in legal position especially for partnerships and LLPs.' Like LLPs, partnership firms would also be impacted by the proposed application of AMT. But LLPs offer greater flexibility. Governed by the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008, LLPs let the partners run the business without risking their personal assets from the LLPs' debts and obligations. 'The imposition of AMT under the proposed I-T Bill 2025 on partnership firms and LLPs that haven't claimed specific deductions will have a direct financial consequence in contrast with the present I-T Act, 1961. By increasing their tax liability by 6%, it could put these entities at a clear disadvantage. Such a move could undermine the attractiveness of firms and LLPs for startups and family offices in India, which may not align with the ongoing efforts to develop India as a prominent financial hub,' said Ashish Karundia, founder of the CA firm Ashish Karundia & Co. LLPs were brought under the purview of the AMT in the Finance Act, 2011. Like minimum alternative tax (MAT)—which is applicable for corporates and was reintroduced in 1996—is calculated after certain additions and deductions to the regular taxable income. It is widely believed that once the implications of the new Bill sink in, the suggestion to bring all kinds of LLPs under the AMT net could trigger active lobbying by Corporate India as large shareholders and ultra-HNIs would try to resist the change.

Paytm swings to ₹123 cr Q1 profit, aided by AI-led cost efficiency; rejigs board

Advertisement One97 Communications, Paytm's parent company, on Tuesday reported a net profit of ₹123 crore in the April-June quarter of FY26 (Q1FY26), buoyed by artificial intelligence-led improvements in its cost structure. This sharp turnaround comes after a ₹539.8 crore loss in the three months through March, driven mainly by a one-time exceptional expense of ₹492 crore from accelerated ESOP cost and an additional ₹30 crore in other impairments. Excluding these exceptional items, the adjusted loss had stood at ₹23 crore in Q4FY25. The Noida-based company's first-quarter results, announced in an exchange filing after market hours, mark a significant recovery from an ₹840 crore net loss in the June quarter of the previous fiscal year. Advertisement Shares of the company settled 3.4% higher at ₹1,052.60 apiece on the BSE on Tuesday. The company also reported a positive Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) of ₹72 crore in the quarter. 'This is the first quarter where we've reported pure Ebitda, without adjusting for ESOP costs. Going forward, we'll remove the ESOP line entirely, and report pure employee expenses,' Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm founder and chief executive officer, said during an earnings call on Tuesday. Consolidated revenue from operations in Q1FY26 rose 28% year-on-year to ₹1,918 crore, helped by an increase in merchant subscription and growth in financial services revenue, the company added. Meanwhile, sequentially, the revenue remained almost flat. Advertisement 'Merchant payments, across both small and large online and offline enterprises, will remain a key focus, and we expect a lot of innovation in that area,' said Madhur Deora, president and group chief financial officer. 'While wallet and BNPL (buy now, pay later) are not immediate quarterly priorities, we are actively working on them. We will continue to grow our merchant lending business, while personal loan growth will depend on a broader recovery in the market.' Rahul Jain, director at Dolat Capital, noted that while Paytm has mentioned about focus on these products, no timelines were provided for some new product initiatives. 'Growth for now will be led by merchant payments and merchant loans.' The company also announced a rejig of its board. Deora will step down from the board after the upcoming AGM but will continue in his role as the company's finance head. Advertisement 'Operating responsibilities are far more important for now, especially with our future growth line items, they're all geared towards consistent profitability from the same core businesses, international expansion,' said Sharma. He added that Deora's focus will, hence, shift towards active business decisions and growth opportunities. The board also appointed Urvashi Sahai, currently Paytm's General Counsel, as a Whole-time Director for a five-year term starting 22 July. Independent Director Bimal Julka also resigned, citing a desire to focus on interests in emerging technologies and ease of doing business. Forward looking plans Overall, analysts believe the company has shown recovery across financial metrics. Dolat Capital's Jain said, 'The results were better on all fronts, with strong profitability driven by steady growth, efficient cost management, and improved execution.' Advertisement Paytm earns most of its revenue from payments, financial, and marketing services. Payment services revenue (including other operating revenue) rose 23% YoY to ₹1,110 crore. Net payment revenue increased 38% YoY to ₹529 crore due to a rise in payment processing margin and device additions, the company said. For incremental revenue, while the company had expressed optimism in the last quarter about monetising its UPI services if the government re-introduced the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR), that potential revenue lever for the payments business now appears to be off the table. In June, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that no MDR will be levied on transactions via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), putting to rest earlier industry speculation that large merchants might soon be subject to the charge again. Advertisement This policy clarity may impact Paytm's plans to drive incremental revenue through UPI monetisation. 'We will see what happens as and when we get informed. We are not basing our business on some distant hope of the future. We are committed to continue to drive profitable business even without it,' said Sharma. In October last year, National Payments Corporation of India had allowed Paytm to onboard users on its UPI platform through partner banks, after the RBI barred Paytm Payments Bank from onboarding new customers due to compliance concerns. Revenue from financial services rose to ₹561 crore, up 3% quarter-on-quarter from ₹545 crore. This revenue also doubled year on year from ₹280 crore, led by merchant loan disbursements and improved collections from the default loss guarantee (DLG) portfolio. However, a shift to non-DLG disbursements by its largest lending partner is expected to slow sequential revenue growth even as disbursements rise. Advertisement Under DLG, Paytm gives a guarantee to its lending partners for a portion of the loans it facilitates in case of a default. The overall financial services customer count increased slightly in the quarter to 560,000. 'There is no significant recovery in terms of personal loans, the mix of merchant and personal loans remains the same as of last quarter,' said Deora.
