Late-night mission to Anvar's house puts Mamkootathil in a spot
Discomfitingly for the Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] campaign in Nilambur alleged that Mr. Mamkootathil had fallen to his knees in supplication in front of Mr. Anvar at the behest of his 'mentor' and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, and the UDF was panicky about the AITMC leader's independent electoral foray. The CPI(M) disseminated viral videos of Mr. Mamkootathil glad-handling Mr. Anvar.
Mr. Anvar, a twice-elected Left Democratic Front-backed (LDF) Independent legislator from Nilambur, had lobbied for a position in the United Democratic Front (UDF) since his bitter exit from the ruling front, consequent to his resignation as Nilambur MLA. and political re-emergence as the AITMC's State coordinator.
Mr. Mamkootathil's 'self-styled mission' to Mr. Anvar came on the day when the UDF proclaimed it was loath to accommodate Mr. Anvar in the alliance until the latter agreed to withdraw his public scepticism about the winnability of Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath in Nilambur.
The UDF also appeared chary of Mr. Anvar's alleged bid to dictate the candidate selection process by suggesting the name of another local leader from the Christian settler-farmer community, a significant electoral bloc in the constituency, instead.
'A disservice'
Mr. Satheesan disavowed Mr. Mamkootathil's overture to Mr. Anvar. He said Mr. Mamkootathil had done the party and the UDF a disservice. Neither the Congress nor the UDF had tasked him to play an emissary's role. 'He went on his own volition, and I have castigated him for the unsanctioned act,' he said.
Mr. Mamkootathil said he had called on Mr. Anvar to persuade the latter not to lose focus on dismantling 'Pinarayism,' a UDF euphemism for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's governance.
His response
Mr. Mamkootathil dismissed accusations that he had left a UDF campaign meeting for the impromptu late-night embassy without informing party colleagues and in an alleged act of political one-upmanship. 'I accept the Congress's decision that I had erred,' he said.
Mr. Anvar said he had told Mr. Mamkootathil that Mr. Satheesan was the sole obstacle to his UDF entry and alleged that the Leader of the Opposition was in cahoots with Mr. Vijayan to deny the AITMC political space in Kerala.

He also said that PM Modi has established an independent Union Ministry of Cooperation with the goal of extending cooperation to every village, poor person, and farmer. He said that today, cooperation plays an active role in 98 per cent of rural areas, and the next 100 years will belong to cooperation. Shah said that cooperatives contribute approximately 20 per cent to the country's procurement of paddy and wheat, while 35 per cent of fertilizers and 30 per cent of sugar production is done through cooperatives. Over 20 per cent of fair price shops are also run through cooperatives. He added that 31 crore people are connected to cooperation through 8.5 lakh cooperative bodies. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot questioned the Home Minister over the alleged delay in Udaipur's Kanhaiya Lal case, pointing out that his government caught the culprits within four hours but the case is still pending even after three years. 'When will the family of the late Mr Kanhaiya Lal get justice? I want to ask Amit Shah ji, you have come to Rajasthan, you are welcome, but at least in today's meetings, give an answer to the people of the state, why hasn't this incident resulted in punishment for those people yet, why hasn't there been punishment till now? It's possible that if the Rajasthan government had handled it — if the SOG or the ATS had handled it — it's possible that by now they would have been punished with life imprisonment or the death penalty, something would have happened, but punishment would have been ensured, it was such a big case.'

Rahul Gandhi to inaugurate second death anniversary of Oommen Chandy
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi will inaugurate a public meeting marking the second death anniversary of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy here on Friday. Making the occasion an opportunity to mobilise its cadres ahead of the upcoming crucial elections, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has organised elaborate arrangements at Puthuppally, where the event is being held. KPCC president Sunny Joseph will preside over the event. During his visit, Mr. Gandhi will pay his respects at the tomb of the late Congress leader at St. George Orthodox Church at Puthuppally. He will also hand over the keys of 11 houses built by the Oommen Chandy Foundation to the beneficiaries and also launch the KPCC's charitable initiative in memory of Oommen Chandy, titled 'Smrithi Tharangam.' The Meenadom Sports Turf, a sports arena being developed as part of an anti-drug campaign, too will be inaugurated during the event. The organisers said a huge venue having a seating capacity of 10,000 people had been set up to accommodate the attendees. Meanwhile, the Manna Charitable Trust, headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, will also organise various programmes and charity activities during July and August as part of Oommen Chandy's second death anniversary. According to Chandy's daughter and managing trustee of the trust, Mariya Oommen, free medical camps will be organised in all 14 districts as part of the initiatives. The visit of Mr. Gandhi to Kottayam is anticipated to significantly energise the party's rank and file ahead of the local body elections later this year and the Assembly elections next year.

Rahul Gandhi to inaugurate memorial meeting for Oommen Chandy
Kottayam (Kerala), Jul 17 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will formally inaugurate a memorial meeting marking the second death anniversary of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in his hometown, Puthuppally, near here on Friday, party leaders said. The event, organised by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), will begin at 10 am and is expected to draw thousands of supporters, local leaders, and family members, they said. Rahul, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will begin the day by laying flowers at Chandy's grave at St George Church, Puthuppally. Following the ceremony, he will formally inaugurate the memorial gathering, the party said. As part of the programme, Rahul will also hand over the keys to 12 newly built houses for the poor, constructed by the Oommen Chandy Foundation, and launch a new charitable initiative named 'Smrititharangam'. The project continues Chandy's earlier initiative, which provided hearing aids to hundreds of children during his tenure as chief minister. The KPCC said the memorial event is intended to honour Chandy's life of service and compassion. After the event in Puthuppally, Rahul Gandhi is expected to travel to Thiruvananthapuram to meet senior Congress leader A K Antony, before returning to Delhi. The KPCC has also called for memorial activities across Kerala, including charitable drives by local Congress units in Chandy's memory.
