Search for missing cockfighters begins at lake in murder probe
Search teams arrived at a lake south of the capital Manila to look for dozens of cockfighters allegedly murdered by rogue police, the Justice Department said.
Fifteen police officers are under investigation over a spate of mysterious disappearances in 2022 in the cockfighting industry.
The case went back into the public eye last month with the televised appearance of a witness claiming to know where bodies had been submerged in Lake Taal.
Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla has since said that he has 'multiple witnesses' who can identify the location of the missing in the lake, which spans more than 230sqm.
'The purpose of (yesterday's mission) is to ... identify the area covered by the search, see initial water conditions and to measure the depth of covered area,' the department said in a statement.
The Philippine Coast Guard will participate in the preliminary assessment alongside police.
National Police Chief Nicolas Torre this week said authorities needed to act swiftly.
'The typhoon season is coming in,' he told journalists on Tuesday.
'We are moving fast to at least try to locate the bodies. We know that it is very, very challenging.'
Remulla said he had requested technical assistance from Japan including help with mapping the lake bed, parts of which are as deep as 172m.
The Japanese embassy in Manila said it had received the request without providing further details.
But Torre believes the Philippines had the necessary equipment on hand to begin the search.

Japanese tourist arrested for driving naked through Hat Yai streets
KOTA BARU: Barely two months after 10 Malaysian tourists were fined in Hat Yai, Thailand, for illegal street racing and traffic violations, another foreigner was fined yesterday for driving naked in the popular tourist destination. The 56-year-old Japanese male tourist was apprehended after driving naked through the streets of Hat Yai about 5.30pm (Thai time). In a Facebook posting, Hat Yai Tourist Police chief Superintendent Sakdanan Kamsai said the man was arrested in a joint operation between Hat Yai Tourist Police and local police. "Several video clips and images of a man driving nude in public areas across the city drew widespread public outrage and condemnation on social media. "Following this, our investigators managed to locate the suspect. He was later identified as a 56-year-old Japanese national," he said. Upon questioning, he said the suspect admitted to being the person seen in the viral footage. Police subsequently charged him under Section 388 of the Thai Criminal Code for committing indecent acts in public, which includes exposing oneself or performing lewd behaviour in public places. He was issued a maximum fine of 5,000 baht (RM655). The tourist was then taken to the Hat Yai police station for further action. The officers also issued a stern warning, stating that such behaviour is illegal, inappropriate, and tarnishes Thailand's tourism image while offending local cultural sensitivities. The suspect acknowledged his wrongdoing and issued an apology for his actions. On May 17, 10 Malaysian tourists were fined in Hat Yai for illegal street racing and traffic violations. They were caught obstructing traffic and causing excessive noise near the Greenway Night Market. The group, aged between 21 and 25, were also cited for illegal vehicle modifications and incomplete vehicle equipment. In addition to the fines, they were required to issue a public apology.

The National Police Commission dismissed Senior Deputy Inspector-General Nilantha Jayawardena, then head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), for disregarding prior warnings of an impending attack by Islamic extremists. Court records show that Jayawardena had been alerted to a possible terror strike 17 days before the coordinated suicide attacks on April 21, 2019, which targeted three hotels and three churches. More than 500 people were also wounded in the bombings. Jayawardena had been found guilty on all seven counts of negligence and dereliction of duty by a disciplinary inquiry led by a retired judge, the police commission said in a statement late on Saturday (July 19). 'Considering the gravity of the charges, the commission decided to give him the maximum punishment,' the statement said. However, he was placed on compulsory leave a year ago, pending a disciplinary hearing, after repeated judicial orders to take action against him. A top-level investigation initiated shortly after the attack found that then President Maithripala Sirisena and four of his senior officials, including Jayawardena, should face criminal prosecution for their lapses. In accordance with Supreme Court orders issued in January 2023 following a civil case, they have paid just over one million dollars in damages to the victims. The 2019 bombings were blamed on a local extremist group that pledged allegiance to ISIS. KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat has today urged Putrajaya to offer a RM10 million reward for credible information leading to the return of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low. He said Low's return is important so that he can be tried and punished accordingly in court like former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. 'If this RM10 million reward can lead to the return of a central figure who has long vanished from public view, it would be a worthy investment in justice. 'It would also send a clear message to the world that Malaysia does not compromise when it comes to combating large-scale corruption,' he said in a statement here. Chua said the amount of the proposed reward is only a fraction of the over RM29 billion in 1MDB assets already recovered by Malaysian authorities. He pointed out that similar reward mechanisms are used by nations like the United States, India and China to apprehend terrorists, or criminals involved in cross-border financial crimes such as money laundering and corruption. 'We must not forget that Jho Low is not just a suspect – he is the symbol of a compromised system, manipulated institutions, and stolen national wealth. 'How can justice truly be served if the man holding the key to the entire scandal remains at large, living a life of luxury abroad?' the Selayang PKR chief asked.
