Cardiff City players put through gruelling tests on day one of pre-season as stars report for duty

Wales Online5 days ago

The Brian Barry-Murphy era begins proper today, with Cardiff City's players having reported to pre-season duties at the club's Vale of Glamorgan training HQ.
Today marks exactly a week since the Irishman was appointed as the man to take charge of the Bluebirds, tasked with the responsibility of getting the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking following the disappointment of relegation last year. And now he will get a chance to run his eyes over the players he has at his disposal.
Among the gathering cohort at the Vale are academy kids pushing for first-team places this year, players who have returned from loan spells away and many of those who were part of the relegation campaign last year, too. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community
It will be an unfamiliar feeling in many ways, this pre-season, as it will be the first time in a decade and a half Joe Ralls will not be part of summer training. It was announced at the weekend that, following conversations with Barry-Murphy, the 31-year-old would leave and seek pastures new.
Ralls joins the mass exodus, which includes the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Andy Rinomhota, Yakou Meite, Dimitrios Goutas, Jamilu Collins and Anwar El Ghazi, out the door, with this summer suddenly feeling like a reset and fresh start for the club.
Among those pictured at the club were returning loan players Kion Etete (Bolton), Ryan Wintle (Millwall) and Joel Colwill (Exeter City), while academy graduates Ronan Kpakio, Dylan Lawlor, Tanatswa Nyakuhwa and Cian Ashford were all present.
"The squad has been split into two groups on the opening day, to allow time for the necessary testing to take place with medical and performance coaches," the club said of the structure of the day. Here's some of the best pictures from day one. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Dan O'Reilly relishing chance to lead by example at Partick Thistle

Stuart Bannigan, Brian Graham and David Mitchell had over 700 appearances between them in red-and-yellow, and all three have departed Firhill this summer. It leaves 30-year-old O'Reilly as one of the seasoned veterans in the dressing room, and the centre-half is aware that there is more responsibility resting on his shoulders this term. Rather than shying away from it, though, it is a role the Irishman is relishing. "Sometimes I forget I'm one of the older boys now,' he said. 'There's no secret, we've lost Brian, Banzo and Mitch. That's a lot of experience and it's important other players step up. "We have to drive the standards. There's going to be a blend of youth and experience in the team. It's important the young boys have players around them that set the standards. "We definitely need to step up and I do see myself as one of those experienced heads. I try and lead by example on and off the pitch and hopefully that seeps into the younger guys. "There's going to be times when we're under pressure because of results and the likes of myself and Lee [Ashcroft] have to show the way." Ashcroft, in particular, will be expected to lead by example. The defender was yesterday named as the Jags' new skipper following Graham's move to Falkirk, while Bannigan - who had been at the club for 14 years - upped sticks and signed for Ayr United. (Image: GordonTerris/Herald&Times) "Lee is a great choice,' O'Reilly said. 'I think he is a model professional and a leader. "I've loved playing with him and you know what you're going to get from him all of the time. He drives standards and he's a great captain to have at the club. "Obviously Brian was captain before and it is an important responsibility. Lee will take that on board. "We have a nice balance playing together. We communicate well and I think we're similar in some ways but different in others. "In terms of the spine of the team, I think we work well together. You need to always fight for shirt." Bannigan's exit has understandably felt a little surreal for everyone connected to the club. A modern-day Thistle legend who was seen as part of the furniture at Firhill, there is an entire generation of Jags supporters who have never seen a Thistle team without the midfielder on the books. O'Reilly admits that turning up to training - Thistle's players returned for pre-season last week - has been a little strange without Bannigan's presence. "It's tough, especially when someone has been there for such a long time,' he explained. "He knows no different than Thistle. So it's probably as strange for us as it is for him. "That's football though. You just have to get on with it. He was great for us last year, but him leaving presents opportunities to other players here. "I'm excited to see other people stepping up and I've already seen people taking on other roles in the squad." O'Reilly may well find himself taking on a new role this term. Thistle are in need of a vice-captain, after all, and as an experienced and reliable head, it would come as little surprise if the centre-back was given the nod. "Maybe! We'll see what happens,' O'Reilly grinned when the proposition was put to him. 'If it did happen, I'd be delighted. But I do try and lead all the time anyway. "It would mean a lot to get the armband on. There might be times when Lee is unavailable through injury or suspension and if the chance comes, I would love it."

Cardiff City star being eyed by 12 Championship clubs as European interest emerges

Cardiff City star being eyed by 12 Championship clubs as European interest emerges Cardiff City are facing a big turnover of players this summer Alex Robertson of Cardiff City (Image: Cardiff) Reports claim up to 12 Championship clubs are keeping tabs on Cardiff City's Alex Robertson this summer. The midfielder signed for the Bluebirds last year but his first season in south Wales unfortunately ended in relegation. Brian Barry-Murphy is the man now at the helm at Cardiff City Stadium and Robertson will know his new boss well, having worked with him during their respective times at Manchester City. ‌ Robertson has been putting in extra training in his native Australia, training with new Portsmouth signing Adrian Segecic. He was filmed on Joner Football's YouTube channel doing some drills. ‌ When asked by the host of the channel about his stint at Cardiff, Robertson said: "Good, really good." Robertson's future could be the subject of speculation though, with The News in Portsmouth stating that the former City starlet will have talks with Barry-Murphy this coming week. The News report that a dozen second-tier outfits are keen on the midfielder, with one of the three relegated sides from the Premier League included in that list. Former club Pompey are said to be in the mix, with European and MLS interest also cited. Article continues below Robertson still has three years left on his Cardiff contract. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. Barry-Murphy is set to revamp the Bluebirds squad in the coming weeks, with the new man hoping to put his stamp on things after arriving from Leicester City. Michael Reindorf has already left for Newport County on loan, while Roko Simic is also edging towards the exit door in the Welsh capital. ‌ "My belief is the smaller the squad, within reason, the more it aligns to having a culture of improvement and players having a strong opportunity to play," Barry-Murphy said when asked about the summer window. "It allows the younger players the opportunity to grow and play. If we have too many players and they don't play then it's a contradiction to the way I see it. "So have a strong squad from the players who are here, then complement it with the players coming through from the academy and the younger ones. Article continues below "Then, adding quality then means we can be specific on what it looks like to have an elite team in this division." Players will be heading to the exit door next week. All nine out-of-contract stars will be leaving for good, while the two loan players they had last season, Will Alves and Sivert Mannsverk, have returned to their parent clubs. Four will return to the fold from their respective loan stints away - Eli King (Stevenage), Joel Colwill (Exeter City), Ryan Wintle (Millwall) and Ryotaro Tsunoda (KV Kortrijk).
