The Gareth Bale Cardiff City takeover situation amid reports of official offer
Multiple reports have emerged that Cardiff have received takeover bids from a Gareth Bale-led consortium

It has been two weeks since a story emerged which revealed a Gareth Bale-led consortium were interested in taking over Cardiff City.
Understandably, it's a story which gripped the Bluebirds fan base. One of Cardiff's most decorated sons and the capital city club. It then ramped up when Bale spoke publicly to confirm his interest during a press opportunity at the UK premiere of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. "We are interested in getting Cardiff," Bale told Sky Sports.

Bale added: "We are trying to engage with Cardiff and more news will come out on that in the future but hopefully we can get something done."

Bale was right, more news did emerge. This week news reports of a bid being officially lodged were reported, adding fuel to the takeover talk. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community
The Times claimed that the Bale-led consortium had tabled a £40m bid, while Sky Sports today suggested it was a £20m offer.
Cardiff sources have confirmed there has been interest from Bale's group, as there has been from many others —there are other interested and well-funded parties— and there has been a letter of intent.

However multiple sources have now also insisted no official proposal has yet been put forward and while the interest is real, it is not as advanced as other reports might suggest. That being said, the consortium are unlikely to go away anytime soon.
Indeed the huge differential in figures adds another confusing layer to all of this. And despite repeated approaches from WalesOnline, sources close to the consortium have declined to comment nor confirm whether a bid has officially been tabled.
While talks have taken place, that is relatively normal as far as Cardiff are concerned. Cardiff as a club and a place is a hugely-attractive proposition for would-be buyers, of course, with a first-class infrastructure, a huge, populous catchment area and vast potential to be tapped into.

Vincent Tan has been at the helm for 15 years and has received numerous enquiries from many interested parties over the years.
As for the valuation, well, as ever, that is determined by the selling party. Football expert Kieran Maguire estimated that the club, now in League One, is likely worth somewhere in the region of £30m-£35m, however that would forego the eye-watering debt owed to Tan.
Where he draws the line in terms of just how much money he is willing to write off is entirely his prerogative, of course.

Tan has always maintained the stance that "everything is for sale except family", however in a post-relegation statement he reaffirmed his commitment to getting Cardiff back into the second tier.
"To lose our place in the Championship is upsetting," he said in April.
"The important thing is that we regain it at the earliest opportunity and I would like to take this chance to tell you that I am committed to getting us back."

Tan has received his fair share of criticism, too. The Malaysian businessman has overseen two promotions to the Premier League, but the most recent drop means he has suffered more relegations than promotions as Cardiff chief.
Some supporters believe it is time for a fresh start under new leadership, however Tan insists he still has the fire within him to turn the trajectory of the club on its head.
"To say I don't care is wrong and I strongly push back on that," he added. "I watch every game and speak to the board and manager before and after each one. My family will tell you: I kick every ball!

"We have enjoyed good times together. I can tell all Cardiff City supporters that it is my intention to support correcting the situation we find ourselves in. I want us to all pull in the same direction.
"I will make every effort to be in Cardiff at the next opportunity that my scheduling allows. I am sorry that we are where we are this summer. It is now time to rebuild." Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

'We all want to turn the page quickly'

New Southampton boss Will Still says he and his squad want to "turn the page quickly" after last season's poor campaign. Saints only won two games last season and were relegated from the Premier League with just 12 32, was subsequently appointed and will get his first taste of management in English football, after previous success with Lens and Stade de Reims in France. "I understand that coming in here there is some trauma from last season," Still told BBC South Today."That's difficult for everyone, but this is a new chapter and a fresh start. Everyone has come back with a real positive energy and we all want to turn the page quickly."We need to learn to win and win regularly in a way that everyone enjoys, that's the goal."Southampton were also relegated in 2023 and managed to bounce back at the first time of asking under the then head coach Russell Martin. The now Rangers boss was able to guide them to a fourth-placed finish and success in the play-offs. But after making it back to England's top tier, Saints never got going in the Premier League. Still's first task will be trying to achieve what Martin was able to do during his first season at the club."The goal is to get out of the Championship as soon as we can," Still added."We're fully aware of how difficult it is going to be but I'm really up for it, we want to do it in a positive way with good people and with a the fan base aligned with how we want to do things."Our squad has a lot of quality and talent to be really competitive in the Championship."We're working to get the right balance at the moment in terms of numbers, but there is clear communication on this and we're honest and open with everyone. I'm really looking forward to it." 'Proactive and entertaining' football Style of play became a big talking point among supporters under Martin, who was known for his possession-based it worked well there was success, but fans became frustrated with some aspects of his coaching, and ultimately results. When Southampton announced Still as their new manager they described him as "one of the brightest young coaching talents in Europe.", externalLast season he took Lens to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 and at Reims he became the youngest manager in Europe's top five what style of football will the new boss bring to Southampton? "We want to be proactive and entertaining," Still said."I've always said that we need to bring the supporters with us. It's easy to say now that we want to play sexy football, but we have to actually do it now."Being proactive is just taking initiative, being brave and positive in everything we do - it's what I have always done and what I would love to do with this team." Southampton's players are back for pre-season training ahead of a trip to Spain and some scheduled friendlies. They will play National League side Eastleigh before facing Espanyol and then Brighton at St Mary's in early August. "I think everyone is so excited to get going again and make it a real positive season," Still said."The potential of the club attracted me to come. If you look at the infrastructure, size and history of the club it is huge."It was a huge opportunity and I believe this is the right club at the right time with the right people."

Northern Ireland star hailed as ‘hungry and motivated' after sealing switch to Championship club

Northern Ireland star Ethan Galbraith has completed his move to Championship club Swansea from Leyton Orient with the Welsh club's manager Alan Sheenan hailing the new signing's 'terrific technical ability, hunger and motivation'. The initial fee is £1.6m which will rise to £2million with appearances with Galbraith signing a three-year deal which includes the option of an additional 12 months. The highly rated 24-year-old has been a long-time target for the Welsh outfit who initially attempted to sign him in January. With Leyton Orient losing in the League One Play-Off Final to Charlton in May and the midfielder having just 12 months left on his contract, he was always likely to transfer in the summer. After talks with the player and his agent Lee Mudd, Swansea have got their man as the Belfast Telegraph reported earlier this week. Galbraith shone in the 2024/25 season for Leyton Orient and will now look to kick on with Swansea, who are managed by Sheehan and would love to be in the promotion mix in the coming campaign. The former Manchester United player has become an important member of the Northern Ireland squad over the past year and will be key for boss Michael O'Neill during the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign. The opening match is in September away to Luxembourg where the Belfast man excelled in 2024 in his first start for his country in a 2-2 draw in the Nations League. By then, Galbraith will aim to have featured in the Championship with his new club. In a statement to announce their capture, Swansea said they had 'beaten off competition from a number of clubs for the services of the Northern Ireland international', adding that Galbraith had been on their 'radar for a number of months'. 'We are delighted to have secured Ethan's services and added him to the squad early into our pre-season preparations,' Swansea head coach Sheehan told the club website. 'He has terrific technical ability which I am sure Swansea fans will appreciate and enjoy when they get to see him in action. 'Ethan is hungry and motivated for the challenge of stepping up to the Championship. He is excited to be joining Swansea City and we are looking forward to integrating him into the squad over the coming weeks.' Director of Football Richard Montague added: 'Swansea has a history of intelligent, technical players making their mark, and we believe Ethan has the ability and potential to develop into the latest of those. 'He joins us after an excellent spell with Leyton Orient, and the calibre of clubs who were interested in him underlines the quality he possesses. 'When Alan and I spoke to him, he made clear how much he wanted to be part of the club and the project here, and we are particularly pleased he will have time to settle into his new surroundings before the new season kicks off.' Global Head of Analysis and recruitment Adam Worth said: 'Ethan is a player our recruitment and scouting teams have followed keenly for a considerable amount of time, and it is great to see everyone's hard work come to fruition as he becomes a Swansea City player. 'We believe Ethan has qualities that make him an excellent fit for Swansea, and he is a player who is determined to work hard to make his mark in the Championship. 'We look forward to him integrating into our squad as we build towards the start of the new campaign.'

Door opens for Lewis Hamilton to produce more British GP magic at Silverstone

Some athletes have so much success at one particular venue that their name becomes synonymous with it. Think Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, Jack Nicklaus in Augusta and Michael Jordan at Madison Square Garden. And, of course, Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone. It said a lot on Thursday when Lando Norris, who is the Brit most likely to taste success at the British Grand Prix, deferred to Hamilton as the king of this place. Because he is – nine victories here over the 40-year-old's outstanding career say it all. If he were to manage another one on Sunday, a total of 10 would double the five each managed by Jim Clark and Alain Prost, who are next on the list. Can he do it? Hamilton said on Thursday that he'll need rain to have any hope of stopping the dominant McLarens. But the Ferraris looked good on a dry track yesterday, Hamilton topping the timesheets in FP1 while both he and Charles Leclerc were pacy in the second practice session. Only Norris was quicker than them, raising hopes that Hamilton might be in the fight after all. Winning here last year was one of the most emotional days of his career, ending a 945-day barren run and creating one last, enduring memory with Mercedes. If he were to record his first Ferrari win here this weekend, it would be just as special. Elsewhere, Williams were in red hot form in the early weeks of this season and sit fifth in the constructors' championship. But now their cars are just getting too hot and it threatens to undo all their good work up to now. Alex Albon has failed to finish the last three races with his car plagued by cooling issues within his Mercedes-supplied engines, while Carlos Sainz can't stop his brakes from getting too hot. It was a problem for the Spaniard in Montreal and then, last time out, he didn't even get to start in Austria as his rear brakes caught fire. Heading into Silverstone, Albon admitted he is "a little bit worried" and said they "can't afford" another mishap on a track where Williams would otherwise expect to perform well. Five hundred thousand fans are expected at Silverstone over this weekend, but none were allowed back in 2020 when, during the Covid-19 lockdown, Hamilton suffered a puncture on the final lap and limped to the finish line with Max Verstappen haring after him. Lando Norris is bidding to become the 11th Brit to win an F1 race at Silverstone and the first, other than Hamilton, since David Coulthard in 1999. Haas title sponsor MoneyGram is looking to leave F1 just two years into its five-year deal with the team, but the search for a replacement is understood to be going well with multiple sources indicating companies are lining up to support the American team. Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192. As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+.
