Tri-Rail has made two recent changes. What to know if you ride the train
In 2024, Tri-Rail rolled out an extension to downtown Miami, which runs from Hialeah to the Brightline station. And without a turnstile and a potential budget crisis, the railway in 2025 has issued reminders on signs, conductor announcements and more random checks on board to buy a ticket to ride.
Here's what to know:
Tri-Rail to downtown Miami
Tri-Rail, which runs mostly along the I-95 corridor from Palm Beach County to Miami International Airport, has rolled out a leg that takes travelers to downtown Miami.
Route extension to downtown: The nine-mile extension runs from the Tri-Rail Metrorail Transfer Station, 2601 E. 11th Ave. in Hialeah, for the trip to downtown Miami. The $70 million taxpayer-funded new leg runs along the FEC railway corridor. The last Tri-Rail route expansion was to Miami International Airport in 2015.
Stations: Tri-Rail trains from Hialeah will stop at MiamiCentral station, 600 NW First Ave. in downtown Miami. Brightline trains run from that station, with stops in Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Orlando. The downtown Miami station connects with Miami-Dade Transit buses, Metrorail, and Metromover.

Tri-Rail's traditional route
Train service: Tri-Rail service, which started in 1989, stops at 18 stations through Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, from Miami International Airport through Golden Glades in Miami-Dade County, Hollywood through Deerfield Beach in Broward County, and Boca Raton and on to Mangonia Park Palm Beach County.

Tri-Rail fare
Unlike Metrorail or your favorite theme park, Tri-Rail doesn't have a ticket turnstile to board.
What to know about paying your fare:
▪ Cards: Monthly paid passengers can tap their card before and after boarding at a station kiosk.
▪ Station: Paper tickets can be purchased at station kiosks.
▪ App: Daily or monthly passes can be purchased electronically on the Tri-Rail app. An electronic wallet holds the passes. Daily electronic passes are valid for four hours from time of purchase.
▪ Cost: Tri-Rail charges by zone ($2.50 to $8.75 one-way depending on trip length) and also offers discounts, including for students, seniors, and for a child or a person with a disability. Frequent riders can buy 12-trip and monthly passes.
Enforcement: Security officers on board make random ticket checks. Conductors also make occasional announcements on having a ticket to ride and signs are posted at stations.
Taking Tri-Rail to South Florida airports
Tri-Rail has stations that serve the Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports:
▪ Miami: If you take Tri-Trail to the Miami airport station, the MIA Mover, an elevated people mover, will take you to the terminals. Several transit options converge at the Miami Airport Tri-Rail station, including Miami-Dade Transit buses, Metro Connect car service and the Metrorail Orange Line.
▪ Fort Lauderdale: Broward airport shuttle: Free, seven-day-a-week shuttle bus service operated by Tri-Rail takes passengers from the Fort Lauderdale Airport station to theterminals at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

PrimeFlight Aviation buys StratAir cargo handling business
PrimeFlight Aviation Services has acquired the cargo handling operations of StratAir, an international freight forwarder that has decided to focus on its core business, expanding its footprint and business opportunities at three airports, the company announced on Monday. The transaction comes less than two weeks after FreightWaves reported that StratAir's parent company, Seattle-based freight transportation, energy and logistics provider Saltchuk Resources moved to ground the four Boeing 767 widebody freighters operated by subsidiary Northern Air Cargo as the airline retrenches in Hawaii and Alaska utilizing standard-size aircraft on local routes. Sugarland, Texas-based PrimeFlight Aviation Services will absorb StratAir's 120,000-square foot cargo warehouse and workforce at Miami International Airport, as well as ground handling operations in Richmond, Virginia, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, into its cargo division. PrimeFlight Aviation, owned by The Sterling Group and Capitol Meridian Partners, is an agent for passenger airlines at more than 200 locations, mostly in North America, providing baggage handling, fueling, deicing, and other services. It also provides cargo services in 10 domestic markets, including loading and unloading for Amazon Air in Houston, Kansas City, Missouri; St. Louis, Portland, Oregon; and Ontario, California. In Mexico, It processes cargo at a dozen locations for passenger airline Viva Aerobus. In July, PrimeFlight Aviation acquired a Turkish refueling and aircraft maintenance company. Earlier this year, PrimeFlight acquired London-based Airbase GSE, which offers air container repair and logistics services, as well as cabin repair and maintenance, at Heathrow Airport and Frankfurt Airport in Germany. It also bought Airworld Handling, a cargo and mail handler with a border inspection post business at Heathrow. 'This acquisition is a key step forward in our mission to build a world-class, integrated cargo handling network,' Craig Smyth, president and CEO of PrimeFlight, said in a news release. The StratAir transaction follows PrimeFlight's recent acquisition of AirWorld, a cargo and mail handler at London Heathrow Airport. The addition of London and Miami facilities gives PrimeFlight cargo infrastructure at two large international air hubs. 'Together, these investments reflect our commitment to developing a scalable platform focused on high-volume cargo gateways and specialized product handling — supporting the industry's growing demand for time-critical and e-commerce-driven logistics solutions,' Smyth added. Saltchuk Aviation, the former owner of StratAir, supported its growth since acquiring the company in 2016. Northern Air Cargo operated a couple 767 freighters on a charter lease with StratAir. It also laid off 30 employees, in addition to winding down 767 operations. PrimeFlight said StratAir's operations will function under its current brand, but over time the business will transition to the PrimeFlight name. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The legacy StratAir will continue to conduct import/export business from its distribution center near Miami airport, Amanda Byers, a PrimeFlight vice president, confirmed. Bizarre new reason for Waterloo train cancellations revealed - a lack of rain!
Forget signal failures, a shortage of drivers or leaves on the line – a new problem is about to hit long-suffering rail passengers: a lack of rain. Train services between London and the West Country are being cut because of track problems caused by hot, dry weather. South Western Railway will halve the number of trains it runs between Waterloo and Exeter St Davids from Monday August 11 until further notice. It said that 'soil moisture deficit' in clay soil embankments had disturbed track levels, meaning trains have to be restricted to 40mph for safety reasons, rather than the usual 85mph. This means that trains will depart Waterloo every two hours rather than every hour. This will also impact passnegers who take the Exeter train to reach intermediate stations such as Clapham Junction, Woking and Basingstoke. In addition, the full journey between Waterloo and Exeter St Davids – which normally takes about three hours 20 minutes - will take about an hour extra. In addition, South Western Railway services between Waterloo and Yeovil Junction, which run hourly, will take an additional 25 minutes. Londoners heading to Exeter will be able to compete the journey much more quickly by switching to Great Western Railway services from Paddington, with its quickest trains taking just over two hours. According to the Met Office, spring 2025 was the UK's warmest and sunniest since 1910 and saw the least amount of rain since 1976. The extremely dry conditions have removed moisture in clay soil embankments between Gillingham in Dorset and Axminster in Devon, causing them to shrink. Track that sits above these embankments has been disturbed, so speed restrictions are being imposed for safety reasons. Most of the route west of Salisbury is made of single track, with only a small number of places for trains travelling in opposite directions to pass each other. With speed restrictions stretching over 12 miles, trains will not be able to pass each other at their allotted times, meaning it will not be possible to run services to the normal timetable. Dry conditions are set to continue, so it is possible that further speed restrictions will be required. Attempting to stabilise the track now would only provide a short-lived fix, as the soil continues to move, according to South Western Railway and Network Rail. They said that once soil moisture levels improve, and the ground begins to rehydrate and settle, engineers will carry out lasting repairs to stabilise the embankments, allowing the normal timetable to return. Stuart Meek, South Western Railway's chief operating officer, said: 'We have not taken this decision lightly and we recognise the impact that it will have on customers west of Yeovil in particular. However, to continue operating a safe and reliable service, we have no alternative but to introduce a reduced timetable. 'We always aim to minimise disruption and so, together with our colleagues at Network Rail, we will carefully monitor train performance and work hard to give customers a service that they can rely on. 'We encourage customers to plan ahead via our website and allow extra time to complete their journeys.' Tom Desmond, Operations Director for Network Rail, said: 'The safety of our customers is our number one priority, which is why we must impose these speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster. 'We want to give customers the longest notice possible of timetable changes, and following a comprehensive analysis of ground and track conditions, we know that we must make changes in the next two weeks. 'We have worked closely with our colleagues at South Western Railway to understand the impact of the speed restrictions, and we will regularly review conditions in order to restore the normal timetable as soon as possible.'
