TMC alleges illegal detention of 444 Bengal migrants in Odisha's Jharsuguda

BHUBANESHWAR: A day after 444 suspected Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants were detained for verification in Odisha's Jharsuguda, the Trinamool Congress alleged they were migrant workers from West Bengal being held illegally, sparking a political row over the verification drive.
Responding to the allegations, the Odisha government said it understood the concerns raised regarding the holding of individuals in Jharsuguda but asserted that safeguarding national interest and security remained paramount and cannot be compromised.
Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar, Mahua Moitra, alleged that migrant workers from West Bengal were illegally detained in Jharsuguda. In a video message posted on X, Moitra said 23 workers from her constituency's Panighata area were detained in Odisha as part of a documentation verification drive.
"This video is to bring to the urgent notice of the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary, and the DGP of Odisha that 23 workers from my Lok Sabha constituency in Mirzapur village under Panighata panchayat in Nadia district are currently illegally detained in an interrogation centre by Orient police station in Jharsuguda district," she said.
She claimed that a total of 444 Bengali-speaking workers from West Bengal are being held in Jharsuguda district, of which 23 are from her constituency. Moitra asserted that all the 23 people have valid documents with them.
Similarly, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam claimed that the Odisha government recently detained over 200 migrant workers from various districts of West Bengal including Murshidabad, Birbhum, Malda, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman and South 24 Parganas on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals.
Meanwhile, a senior Odisha Police officer said the 444 persons under scrutiny lack valid documentation to establish their residency or citizenship, which necessitated a thorough verification process to ascertain their identities.

Only Biharis will get to vote in Bihar, says BJP

BJP has said that Bihar residents need not be worried about reports of Bangladeshi, Myanmar and Nepali citizens in Bihar's voters' list found by the block level officers (BLOs). The party clarified that no outsider would be allowed to cast their vote in the upcoming assembly elections. "Rohingyas, Bangladeshis, Burmese and Nepalis have been found in the voters' list. Biharis will vote in Bihar to elect the next government. There is no need for the voters of Bihar to be afraid," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told ET. "No outsider can cast their vote in Bihar. Being a border state, Bihar has had infiltration problems for many years. The ECI is verifying it now." Hussain said the Opposition has been trying to spread the rumour that Muslim votes would be removed from the electoral rolls . "This is baseless. Valid voters need not be worried. BLOs are visiting every house and genuine voters should present their credentials as sought by ECI. The Opposition in Bihar knows they have lost the election before voting. Now, they are trying to find an excuse for their failures and blaming the EC," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Barefoot Shoes are Going Viral with Seniors - For Good Reason Barefoot Vitality Learn More Undo Meanwhile, the Opposition rebuffed the report questioning its authenticity. "Who are these sources? These are the same sources that said that Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore have been captured. SIR was conducted for the last time in 2003 under the UPA government. Since then, we have seen many elections. In those elections, we lost by three to four lakhs. Does that mean all these foreigners voted for PM Modi?" RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said. "This means the NDA are at fault for any dubious elements' names getting added to the voters' lists. That means all the elections they have won have been a fraud. SIR is a complete eyewash. ECI is working as a cell of a political party." Live Events

Foreigners in Bihar rolls; will be removed after 'proper enquiry': ECI Officials

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads In a significant development just ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar, Election Commission officials on Sunday indicated that a 'large number' of possible foreign nationals have been found living in the state and their names would be excluded from the final electoral rolls if it is so proven after "proper enquiry".The ECI is currently conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar which involves house-to-house enumeration and verification of documents of every elector. "During the house-to-house visits, a large number of people from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar have been found by the BLOs. These persons have been able to procure all documents including aadhaar, domicile certificate, ration card etc", ECI sources said. They said "after proper enquiry to be conducted from Aug 1 till Aug 30, if found true, such names shall not be included in the final list to be published on Sept 30, 2025".The three documents: Aadhaar, domicile certificate and ration card are not among the 11 documents proof-listed by the ECI in its June 24 order. The Supreme Court last week asked the ECI to consider allowing aadhaar and ration cards as well. The latest ECI revelation, therefore, is bound to bring the issue of citizenship to the centre of the SIR, especially in the Seemanchal region. Seemanchal is roughly spread across 24 assembly seats across the four districts of Kishanganj, Araria, Purnea and Katihar and has often been under watch for suspected infiltration of illegal immigrants. The home ministry has, on various occasions, highlighted the issue of influx of immigrants into different parts of the country, especially the Rohingyas. The issue of suspected Bangladeshi and Rohingyas Muslim presence in Seemanchal region has also been red flagged by agencies, sources told ET. "The issue of illegal intruders is related to national security, and should be dealt with strictly and they should be identified and deported," said a senior government per official estimates, there are nearly 40,000 Rohingyas across India with the highest number in Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Haryana among others. The problem has compounded since late 2011 with Rohingyas from Rakhine province in Myanmar migrating to India following persecution by the Myanmar armed there are no specific figures for Bihar, as per a Parliament reply on February 24, 2016, West Bengal with 3,724, followed by Tripura (1713), Tamil Nadu (639) and Maharashtra (228) recorded the highest number of cases of arrest of foreign nationals in 2014 under various sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946 and on charges of violating other provisions of the Immigration Control Rules & Regulations. There were 28,356 such foreign nationals found to be overstaying as of December 2014. As per the home ministry's data, more than 14,000 Rohingyas are presently registered with the UNHCR, as staying in India.

Verify backgrounds of domestic help, ex-MLA Limbavali urges Mahadevapura residents in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Former MLA Aravind Limbavali Sunday led an awareness campaign at Mahadevapura, urging IT professionals, villa residents, and apartment associations to verify the backgrounds of domestic workers and security personnel. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The campaign's focus was on addressing the alleged presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Limbavali claimed that illegal immigrants are taking jobs meant for locals. He appealed to the residents to report any suspected Bangladeshi immigrants, and landlords were asked not to let their properties without conducting proper checks. To support the initiative, the Mahadevapura Task Force, led by Limbavali, has set up a dedicated war room. He claimed the task force has received around 3,700 calls related to the issue in three months. Several BJP functionaries, including GM Siddeshwar, Prathap Simha, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Kumar Bangarappa and NR Santosh, and P Harish from Harihar, participated. The campaign comes in the backdrop of a May directive from the ministry of home affairs, asking states to form special teams to track illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The BJP functionaries accused the state's Congress govt of inaction. "This is about national security and protecting local jobs. If the govt thinks we are using this for vote bank politics, then let them take action and deport these illegal immigrants," Limbavali said. The campaign also highlighted specific areas in Mahadevapura where alleged illegal immigrant communities are concentrated. Limbavali questioned why police don't have updated data and offered support in identifying illegal residents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said discussions were held with the police commissioner, who sought a month's time to begin tracking suspected illegal immigrants. The assembly constituency has been divided into five to assess the situation, including the living conditions and waste management practices in immigrant settlements. BJP functionaries plan to expand the campaign statewide, positioning it as a security and job protection measure.
