
‘I lived my passion': how Christine Beckers and a group of intrepid female drivers blazed a trail in 1970s Monaco
Christine Beckers competed in the first Grand Prix Monte-Carlo Féminin on 26 May 1974 and now, at 81 is as irrepressibly enthused about racing as she was when she fell in love with the sport as a teenager.
'I lived my passion,' she says. 'There's no better way to live. Driving, I always felt that's what I like the most in life. That's where I'm happy. That's where I forget everything else. Only having the best time.'
It is a philosophy she has long followed, determined not to be constrained by the attitude toward her gender of the time. 'I have to admit that I think it helped me,' she says. 'Because I was quite a nice girl, good looking, smiling, a bit crazy. So everybody was laughing at me but saying: 'Why not? Why not? She's so crazy, she could do something.''
She did. The Belgian has embraced the sport her entire life. Last year she became the oldest driver to have taken to the wheel of an F1 car, the 1985 Arrows A8 lent to her by her compatriot Thierry Boutsen, which she drove at Zolder. She also raced competitively at Spa-Francorchamps in the same model of Alfa Romeo she had previously driven 50 years before.
After all this time she still vividly remembers the moment the sport captured her. 'I was 14 and in 1958 my father took my brother and me to Francorchamps to see the Formula One Grand Prix I have a picture of me in a racing car that day and you can see in my eyes that I really decided I want to do that,' she says. 'So I told everybody I was going to be a Formula One driver. I was just looking at the car and the sound of the motors and the atmosphere. I even liked the special oil they were using at that time and later on I wanted to do a perfume with it.'
But she also admits it was far from straightforward to even begin to achieve the dream. 'I was very bad at learning to drive. Nobody wants to believe that, but I was very bad. All the family had to try together because there were no lessons at that time,' she recalls, with a hearty chuckle. 'Then at 18 I quit school because at mathematics I was awful. So my father was very angry with me. He was crazy about a girl saying she wanted to be a racing driver and not having good results at school. But I never doubted, I really was sure I was going to be a very good racing driver.'
Her conversation as we discuss race in Monaco is peppered with the enthusiastic laughter of a competitor never happier than when discussing the sport they love. While the races she competed in at Monaco have previously been barely a footnote in racing history, the story of the 1974 and 1975 Ladies' Monte-Carlo Grands Prix are among those collected in a new book, 100 Years of Women: Motorsport & Monaco.
The only women-specific support races at the Monaco GP were held before the main event and run over 15 laps. Being the 1970s the principality's paper ran a picture of the drivers with the headline 'Ces jolies filles demain sur le circuit pour le Premier Grand Prix Monte-Carlo Prix féminin' which roughly translates as 'These pretty girls will be on the circuit tomorrow for the First Ladies' Monte Carlo Grand Prix'. For the participants, who were racers as opposed to jolie filles, it was an important moment.
'All the girls were invited from everywhere in the world,' says Beckers. 'Monaco is always very special, it's like a dream. I knew that somebody who wins at Monaco is somebody very special. It was fantastic for me, even if it was a very small car and not many horsepower, I didn't mind, because not many people can say: 'I've been racing in Monaco.''
The car was but a moderately souped-up version of the road-going Renault 5 and, as the press noted at the time, it was 'comical' to have drivers at the top of their game in a ride designed for tootling around town. Beckers was a five-time Belgian women's national champion at this point and that year she would also set a record alongside her teammate Yvette Fontaine as the first all-women team to win their class at the Le Mans 24 Hours.
At the time she was also racing under the mononym 'Christine' – a rather amateur attempt to avoid her parents finding out– and while she cared little for the cars, she loved the chance to race on the streets of Monte Carlo.
'When you are racing, you are not really interested in the others. You are interested in who you can beat,' she says. 'When you have your helmet on, you don't know if it's a girl or a man. You want to be first. So you are in a sort of other world. I knew the track, I've been walking on it; I was not afraid at all because the car was very slow. I was used to driving faster cars. But as it was in Monaco, it was not important.'
Beckers attended the traditional pre-race reception with Prince Rainier and Princess Grace and notes, with no little glee, the actor Elizabeth Taylor, too. However, in terms of the race she remains aggrieved that her 'sort of friend' Marie-Claude Beaumont, with whom she had raced in rallies, proved ruthless.
The pair were on the front row of the grid in 1974. Beckers believed they had made an agreement to enter the first corner together but says Beaumont cut across her and took the lead, from which there was no chance of a comeback. 'I had to follow her during the whole race and I finished second and that was awful,' she says.
The American driver Paula Murphy was also somewhat disarmed but in her case by the formal reception. 'I kind of walk around the fringe of the room, and I'm gawking, and finally I sit down in a chair,' Murphy recalled in 1976. 'The butler came over with a big silver tray. So, I had a champagne and smoked a cigarette. I thought: 'Well, I've had my glass of champagne, and I've met them all.'' So she left.
'The next day Jackie Stewart got into the car and said: 'Princess Grace was worried about you last night and she wanted to know what happened to you.' Well, I thought it was a cocktail party – at least that's what the man at the hotel desk had interpreted to me – and it turned out it was a dinner, and I had left before dinner.'
Beckers was invited to the race again in 1975 but was unable to compete because her car rolled in a pre-race practice. She went on to drive the Le Mans 24 four times, including in 1976 alongside Henri Pescarolo and Jean-Pierre Beltoise for the highly respected Inaltéra team and a year later for the same team she partnered with Lella Lombardi, still the only woman to score an F1 championship point, to take 11th in the vingt-quatre, which remains the highest finishing position for a female driver squad. She was the first woman to compete in the Paris-Dakar rally, drove the Daytona 24 Hours twice and competed at Daytona in Nascar.
It has been an extraordinary journey and one she has no intention of ending any time soon. 'I'm so happy to live my dream. In Monaco I was realising every minute of it.I was saying to myself: 'Here I am.' The people who were saying I could never do it, well, you see, here I am.'

There can't be many 27-year-old's living the high life like George Russell this year. The British Formula One star is entering his prime, is building a sponsorship empire, travels the world with glamourous girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundt and is closing in on a new Mercedes deal worth an eye-watering £30m-a-year. There had been some nagging doubts about his future with the constructor but Russell is set for a bumper payday, more than doubling his current £12m-a-year package. As Mail Sport's Jonathan McEvoy exclusively revealed this week, negotiations have accelerated over the last few weeks and a source close to the talks confirmed: 'All the main points have been agreed.' Russell's incoming raise will remain well short of Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton - each on about £60m a year. While he does not yet have the achievements or global fanbase to garner such earnings, his win in Canada and domination over team-mate Kimi Antonelli this season point to his consistent form. He is delivering off the track, too. Russell is extremely marketable and has brands queuing up to represent them. His net worth is currently estimated to be in the region of £15m, though clearly that is set to increase substantially in the next few years. In addition to Mercedes and their high-performance engine division AMG, he has deals with the British Racing Drivers' Club, Bell Helmets, Alpinestars, MDM Designs and sportswear giant Adidas. He even has watch company IWC Schaffhausen backing his wristwear options and he's been seen wearing their Portugieser 'Obsidian' model, which can cost up to £41,200. Russell, a former child karting prodigy who grew up in Norfolk, like many F1 stars, is no stranger to a modelling shoot, either. He adorned the cover of fashion magazine L'Officiel last October and is sharply dressed at number of society events every year. Russell has been pictured at Wimbledon rubbing shoulders with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, always kitted out in his finery. He was in situ for the final this year, decked out in a tailored double-breasted pin stripe suit alongside girlfriend Mundt. Mundt has been in a relationship with Russell since 2020 and the couple happily live in Monaco together. She has previously worked in finance - as an investor relations associate at Ruffer LLP in London - but recently announced that she is going back to studying. The driver's very glamorous girlfriend - who is originally from Spain and moved to the UK aged 18 - has a business degree from the University of Westminster. Carmen has more than 409,000 followers on Instagram, and often shares snaps of her luxury travels and enviable style online. The couple are understood to have met through friends in London. 'Five years with the most wonderful person I could ever ask for,' Mundt wrote on in honour of their anniversary in February this year. 'Forever proud of who you are and what you do.' She is impressive in her own right with a bachelor's degree in business management and finance and a diploma in asset allocation and risk management from the University of Geneva. When speaking about her work, she previously told followers: 'I always wanted to work in finance. 'My family struggled financially during the global crisis and that determined what I wanted to do from a very young age.' When asked if jetting around the world to watch Russell at races distracted her from her day job, she replied: 'It takes my head away from work and I enjoy the sport and spending time with him. 'There's nothing I enjoy more than G's success.' And the driver has described his other half as 'incredibly supportive'. 'Last year, for the first time, I experienced some fans booing me on a driver's parade. I'd never experienced that before', Russell explained. 'I talk with the people who I trust and love the most and they offer a huge hand.' Mundt is also business savvy when it comes to her own affairs and has her own contracts with major brands as an influencer. He has worked with Dior and Tommy Hilfiger among other luxury companies. Unsurprisingly, Russell ferries Mundt around in a variety of luxury cars from his collection when they're jet-setting around the world. It has a top speed of 219mph, goes 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds and holds the record for the fastest lap time for a production car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Much of the tech in the car is similar or the same as that in an F1 vehicle and only 275 of them were made, all by hand. Given the tech and exclusivity, it is perhaps no surprise to see the price tag up at a whopping £2.5million. But Russell has his hands of one now and he'll add it to his existing fleet of Mercedes. Russell usually drives a Mercedes-AMG G 63, an off-roader better suited for the British countryside, while he also has an affection for Mini Mokes, which don't have any roofs or doors. He recently revealed that he typically uses a Mercedes-AMG C 63 S and washes it by hand himself. No doubt in the coming years Russell will add to his collection, especially now he's on the brink of the £30m-a-year deal. His hard work on the track restarts at the Hungarian GP this weekend and the already bountiful fruits of his labour will continue to grow in the years ahead.

F1 stars discuss which teams they could join in secret chats away from prying eyes
Carlos Sainz has been around the block in Formula One and is certainly well in tune with the rumour mill surrounding the sport, which he opened up on in a recent podcast appearance Carlos Sainz admitted there is a location where Formula One stars secretly discuss their future. The Williams star has driven for five teams in the sport so far and is not certainly not a stranger when it comes to speculation about a seat on the grid. Currently in the midst of his first season with the British team after he was replaced at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton last year, he's been partnered up with Alex Albon but has endured a tricky campaign with just 16 points to his name after 13 races. Sainz's departure from Ferrari came as a shock to the F1 world, especially after having a career-best year in 2024 where he finished fifth in the Drivers' Championship standings with 290 points, just two behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri. However, a chance to acquire the seven-time world champion was an opportunity the Prancing Horse simply couldn't turn down. Speculation surrounding where Sainz would race next was strife and during an appearance on The High Performance Podcast, the 30-year-old said he had discussed his future with Albon before signing with the Grove-based team. "I already knew Alex," the Spaniard said. "I had talked with him in the paddock. I remember a few times like, 'Are you coming or not?' I was like 'Probably, I think so.'" Sainz then told Jake Humphrey that the drivers' parade, when the stars of F1 are taken around the track on a truck before a race, is an ideal place for the racers to speak about their future away from watching eyes and ears. He continued: "We always have those kind of conversations in the drivers parade. If it's silly season, we talk a bit about silly season and I think everyone at the time was asking me, 'Where are you going, what are you going to do?' and I must have talked with him about it." With Sainz in a lowly 16th place in the standings, Albon sits eighth with 54 points to his name, just nine behind Mercedes ' Kimi Antonelli. While the Williams pair look to enjoy a friendly relationship, the 'Smooth Operator' admitted they have no qualms about going to battle on the track. "Don't underestimate that even Alex and myself when we put the helmet on, we want to beat each other as much as any other team-mate in the grid," he added. "It's just when we take our helmets off, we sit in that meeting and we give feedback about the car. "A good thing that we managed to do is leave the ego aside, leave your personal interests aside and say, 'How do we make this car quicker as soon as possible?' For that, I'm more honest than I would be with him or other team-mates about what I feel on the car and he's more honest with me on the past of the car and where the car has ended up. Sainz also opened up about feeling rocked by Ferrari's decision to replace him with the Brit. Admitting that he believed he was set to remain with the Italian team for the foreseeable future, it was a phone call that let him know of Frederic Vasseur's decision to part ways with him that left him "completely shocked." "I received a phone call and I suddenly received the news," he explained on the podcast. "I was completely shocked. I went from believing I was going to be in Ferrari for a while to, 'What am I going to do now?' "It never occurred to me that that could happen." When asked whether he was given any reason over his departure, he answered: "No, not really. There weren't many reasons. I'm not going to go a lot into the detail of those conversations. "But I was like, 'Okay now it's my time to shine and to prove to everyone what I'm worth. It's the most important moment of my life now.'"

Lewis Hamilton is not ‘useless' but must accept he is not the driver he once was
The suggestion from Lewis Hamilton that Ferrari should find someone to replace him is nonsense. The remark was made soon after he watched his team-mate take a shock pole position on a track that he himself has dominated at over the years with eight wins and nine poles. It was surely not a serious suggestion, but was rather made with the dejection from qualifying 12th still raw. Hamilton was again wearing his heart on his sleeve. For any Formula One driver this result would hurt. For an F1 driver with seven world championships – and a desire to win a record eighth – it is evidently unbearable. On Sunday morning, he may feel differently. Clearly, this was not a good performance by any stretch of the imagination. 'Absolutely useless' are the exact words Hamilton used. Yet perhaps his comments at the Hungaroring are more reflective of the current state of play at Ferrari in 2025. Hamilton has now had 13 races to settle into the car, the culture and the general environment at Maranello. That is plenty, but at the same time, it is a long way from the six years that Leclerc has had. He has at least won a race in 2025 – albeit a sprint race – and is only 30 points behind Leclerc, who has had a strong season yet again. He has not been outclassed by the man 13 years his junior, but he has been second best. In only two grands prix has Hamilton finished ahead and in just five qualifying sessions of 17 has he been the lead Ferrari. In the run of five races before the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend, Hamilton actually had the stronger qualifying average of the two Ferrari drivers. The strength of his emotions on Saturday evening are probably coloured by the events of the past couple of weeks. Let us not forget that Hamilton had a reasonably strong weekend in the rain at Silverstone, narrowly missing out on a home podium after qualifying ahead of Leclerc. Progress was being made as he drew closer to Leclerc's qualifying pace. Does Hamilton still have 'it'? At the following race in Belgium, though, Ferrari brought an upgraded rear suspension. It was hoped this would help the team set the car up more in its optimal window and for the drivers to have a car they could trust more. That was the case for Leclerc, who qualified and finished fourth in the sprint race and qualified and finished third in the Sunday grand prix at Spa. Hamilton, meanwhile, was eliminated in both SQ1 and Q1, qualifying 18th and 16th. He fought back to seventh in the grand prix but it was Leclerc who took a fourth podium in six races as well as the plaudits. Trying to even half-heartedly entertain the proposition of Ferrari changing drivers is silly. It would not happen mid-season. Even next year, who on the grid would be a sensible and feasible replacement? Hamilton may no longer be performing at the very top of his game but he is still one of the best drivers on the grid with a wealth of experience, technical knowledge and the drive to succeed. Yet on the evidence of the last few seasons, he is no longer in the very top bracket of drivers, perhaps a notch or two currently below Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri, George Russell and Charles Leclerc. Does Hamilton still have 'it'? There are still a few times in a season when he can find 'it' but they are less frequent than at his peak and less frequent than the men in the group above. For the majority of his career, he has been able to operate at an elevated level across most of the season. That is why he was able to win six world championships in seven years. However good your machinery is, success like that does not happen by accident. Yet for any sportsman the race against age and waning powers is one that cannot be won. It is too early to say if that is the case for Hamilton now, but we will know in another two or three years. The decline of Michael Schumacher – another man with seven world titles to his name – was more drastic and apparent because he had three seasons out of F1 before returning with Mercedes. In that stint, he was beaten comfortably by Nico Rosberg but still had the occasional moment, like his Monaco 'pole' in 2012. Hamilton's decline has been more gradual and less obvious. It is also allied to his struggles to get to grips with the current post-2021 generation of ground-effect cars. He, too, is now up against someone with far less success but with comparable talent. As much as Hamilton appears to no longer be the driver he once was, the hardest thing for him may be to accept the dawning reality that the man in the other car is just quicker.
