
Thai commerce ministry eager to boost price, exports of agricultural products
The production of in-season rice is scheduled to be completed in November and December.
The Ministry of Agriculture has been informed by MP Praphat Pothasuthon of Suphan Buri's Constituency 5 about falling rice prices and the struggles faced by farmers since July 9, said Mr Jatuporn.
'Rice is a major agricultural product of Thailand, and we are committed to solving these problems by cooperating with relevant agencies at all levels,' Mr Jatuporn said.
He emphasised long-term relief measures for farmers and efforts to expand export markets.
At present, the price of unhusked rice with 15% moisture content ranges from 6,400 to 7,400 baht per tonne.
For rice with 25% moisture, the price ranges from 5,200 to 6,200 baht per tonne.
Glutinous rice is priced between 10,000 and 11,000 baht per tonne, while jasmine rice with 15% moisture is selling for 15,500 to 16,300 baht per tonne.
Total rice production for the 2025/26 season is expected to reach 35.28 million tonnes of paddy, an increase of 5.41% compared to the previous season.
From January to May, Thailand recorded rice exports of 3.05 million tonnes worth US$1.8 billion — a 25.6% decrease from 2024, when exports were valued at US$2.6 billion.
Speaking during a visit to farmers in Chiang Mai on Sunday, Mr Jatuporn said the ministry is working to export 65,000 tonnes of longans, including processed products.
A business matching event was held and generated around 200 million baht in sales. In addition, longan farmers in Lamphun have already secured an unlimited export quota for Indonesia, with plans to expand into markets such as India and the United Arab Emirates, Mr Jatuporn added.
For the domestic market, the ministry is collaborating with PTT Public Company, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), and other agencies to open more sales outlets during the harvest season, which runs from July to August. Activities include the organisation of the Thai Fruit Festival.
Mr Jatuporn said one of the key issues raised by fruit farmers was a shortage of labour.
They also called on the government to support the development of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards to boost export efficiency, including packaging for online deliveries.

Goods from Vietnam replacing Thai products in Cambodia
TRAT - Cambodian retailers in Koh Kong, a province bordering eastern Thailand, are turning to imports from Vietnam to fill shelves left empty by the ban on border trade with Thailand. Pornchai Limploypitat, a Thai trader who supplies staples to the Cambodian province, said his customers in Koh Kong were now selling consumer goods from Vietnam because of the shortage of Thai goods including snacks, instant noodles and construction materials. Vietnamese products were not as popular as Thai imports, but goods from Thailand had disappeared from Koh Kong markets, Mr Pornchai said. He now works as chief receptionist at Koh Koh Resort. Thailand banned the export of goods to Cambodia when the dispute over four contested areas of the border flared afresh after a brief exchange of gunfire between soldiers at Chong Bok in Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani province in May. Thailand has also shortened opening hours at international crossings to 8am to 4pm, instead of 6am to 10pm, since June 24. Thai exports to Koh Kong are mostly shipped through the checkpoint at Hat Lek in Khlong Yai district of Trat. Two-way trade there in fiscal 2024 was almost 30 million baht, with 23 million baht in favour of Thailand, according to Khlong Yai Customs House. Top export items from Thailand were soft drinks, milk, supplements and sugar, while seafood led imports from Cambodia. Another supplier, Somchai Kimsoi, deputy chief of tambon Hat Lek, said he had recieved no orders for goods from Cambodian traders since the cross-border ban was enforced. The border spat also dampened tourism, with few visitors to the Thai border market. "Hat Lek market once had more than 100 shops, with Cambodians from Koh Kong selling goods to tourists from Thailand. Now, 90% of them are closed," he said. Thai central bank governor nomination to be proposed to cabinet next week, finance minister says
A candidate for Thailand's next central bank chief will be proposed to cabinet next week, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said, adding there was no time to make the proposal during Tuesday's meeting. He told reporters there was no issue with the nomination. He did not disclose the identity of the chosen candidate. Two government sources and two Thai media outlets said earlier that the minister would propose to cabinet state-owned bank head Vitai Ratanakorn as the next central bank chief. The appointment of Mr Vitai, 54, the president and CEO of the Government Savings Bank, would be subject to cabinet and royal approval. He would serve a five-year term starting Oct 1. The government sources declined to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to media. The finance minister's decision, from among two candidates, was reported by the Manager and Thansettakij news outlets on Tuesday. If appointed, Mr Vitai would succeed Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput, who could not seek a second term as he has reached retirement age. Mr Vitai has a master's degree in finance from Drexel University in the United States, as well as degrees in economics and law from Chulalongkorn and Thammasat universities. The new governor faces a tough task of supporting a struggling economy facing tepid consumption, high household debt and steep US tariffs, with limited monetary policy room.
