Brazilian hiker found dead after falling off Indonesia volcano trail
A Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at an Indonesian volcano popular with hikers has been found dead, the Brazilian government and Indonesia's rescue agency said Tuesday, after a days-long search and rescue effort.
Attempts to evacuate Juliana Marins, 26, who went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, were hindered by challenging weather and terrain after authorities spotted her unmoving body with a drone.
'The Brazilian government informs, with deep sadness, the death of the Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who had fallen from a cliff surrounding the trail near the crater of Mount Rinjani,' the Brazilian foreign ministry said in a statement.
'At the end of four days of work, hindered by adverse weather, terrain, and visibility conditions in the region, teams from the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency found the body of the Brazilian tourist.'
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he received the news of Marins' death 'with great sadness.'
'Our diplomatic and consular services in Indonesia will continue to provide full support to her family at this time of great pain,' Lula said in a post on X.
The head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, Mohammad Syafii, said rescuers would evacuate her body on Wednesday morning because of bad weather.
'One of the rescuers managed to reach the victim at the depth of 600 metres. Upon checking, there were no signs of life,' he told reporters. 'Three rescuers got closer to the victim and confirmed she has died.'
An Instagram account providing updates from the Marins family throughout the search effort also said Marins was found unresponsive on Tuesday.
'Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive,' the account, which amassed more than 1.5 million followers since Marins went missing, wrote in a post on Tuesday evening.
'We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.'
Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia.
Lombok is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views.
In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island, including one on the mountain.

'You wouldn't think that Guanabara Bay has so much life,' said Flavia Bichara, a 52-year-old lawyer who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. She said the hope of spotting a turtle and watching the sun rise gives her ample motivation to get out of bed early. 'The sunrise, for us, symbolizes coming back to life," she said. Polynesian canoeing and water sports in general have become increasingly popular in Niteroi over the last few years, said Isabel Swan, the municipality's deputy mayor who has an Olympic bronze medal in sailing. The number of Polynesian canoeing clubs in the area has jumped from five to around 40 in the last decade. 'This boom occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, because people can practice water sports while complying with social distancing rules,' she said. In August, Niteroi will host the Va'a long distance world championship in which around a thousand athletes from 30 countries will compete. And alongside Rio, the city is a candidate to host the 2031 Pan American Games. Estella Tourl, 68, was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. As well as the stunning setting, she says she loves the social aspect of the activity. 'We're in nature, we exercise and we talk. Afterward everyone sits together, we have coffee and laugh. It's stimulating – we want to live,' Tourl said.

Indonesian rescuers recover body of Brazilian tourist who fell off volcano cliff
JAKARTA, June 26 (Reuters) - Indonesian rescuers have recovered the body of a Brazilian woman who died after falling off a cliff while hiking on Indonesia's second-highest volcano, rescue officials said. Juliana Marins, 27, was hiking with five friends on Mount Rinjani on Saturday when she slipped and fell off a cliff on the side of the 3,726-metre (12,224 feet) mountain. She was found dead on Tuesday, Indonesian rescuers said. Rescuers had been attempting to retrieve the body since but the effort was hampered by thick fog and the steep terrain. The body was recovered on Wednesday in a retrieval process that took six hours, Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency said late on Wednesday. After being lifted from the cliff, Marins' body was carried on a stretcher to the rescuers' nearest post where an ambulance took it to a hospital. "Initially we would like to use helicopter in the evacuation but it's not possible due to the weather condition," he said. "So, we had to evacuate the victim on stretchers which took quite a long time." Footage shared by the agency showed rescuers attempting to lift the body from the cliff using ropes, overshadowed by thick fog. Indonesia's rescuers agency had met with the family of Marin to explain the evacuation process, Syafii said, adding the family "can accept the situation". Located in West Nusa Tenggara province, Mount Rinjani is an active volcano and popular tourist site in the Southeast Asian archipelago. Several tourists, including foreigners, have died in accidents while hiking the volcano over the past few years, local media reported, including a Malaysian tourist who also fell off a cliff last month.
