
Costa Coffee's India FY25 sales jump 30% to Rs 198 cr; gross margin declines marginally

The growth was driven by store expansion, as the number of outlets increased from 179 to 220 in FY25, according to the latest annual report of
Devynai International Ltd
(DIL).
Its revenue from operations was Rs 151.8 crore, and profit stood at 116.6 crore for the financial year ended March 31, 2024.

Costa Coffee's gross margin declined marginally to 75.4 per cent from 76.8 per cent in FY24, primarily because of inflation in
coffee beans
and other input materials.
"The brand contribution margin came down from 17 per cent to 16.1 per cent, with average daily sales (ADS) per store declining from Rs 33,000 to Rs 27,000, translating into a reduction of same store aales growth (SSSG) from 8.7 per cent to 4.1 per cent during this period," said DIL.

) chain operator.
Earlier this year, in April, Costa Coffee's Global CEO Philippe Schaillee, who was on a visit here, told PTI that India is going to be among the top five global markets for the British coffee chain brand.
The coffee brand, now owned by beverage major Coca-Cola, is currently among the top ten global markets.
"Costa Coffee is aggressively expanding in India, targeting 40-50 new outlets annually despite global economic uncertainties. DIL sees India as a high-potential market, driven by a growing preference for premium coffee among millennials and
Gen Z
," said DIL.
This trend is manifest in the fact that the coffee space in the country is growing at 10 to 12 per cent, double the rate of global markets.
"India, which is among Costa's top 10 markets globally, has the potential to get into the top five markets in five years, and Costa Coffee is just the sweetly aromatic spot to seize this strong opportunity," the report said.
According to DIL, India, which is largely a 'chai' (tea) loving nation, is becoming a country of a growing populace of coffee lovers, with a massive cultural shift in its drinking habits over the years.
Coffee is now the first love of many Gen Z Indians influenced strongly by Western culture, which is often a part of their work ethos.
"At Costa Coffee, this has actuated a strong focus on expanding the brand's presence in high footfall locations, such as airports and multiplexes," said DIL.
In the Indian cafe market, Costa Coffee competes with international chains such as Starbucks, Tim Horton, McCafe, and Dunkin'.
Besides, local chains like Cafe Coffee Day,
Blue Tokai
,
Third Wave Coffee
and Barista are also amplifying their play in the fast-growing cafe market in India.

Relaxed emission norms for thermal generation to reduce power costs
AI image NEW DELHI: The mandatory retrofitting of coal-fired generation plants with mechanisms to reduce sulphur emission will apply to only units within 10 km of cities with population exceeding 10 lakh instead of all power stations under a 2015 mandate. The revised policy, notified on Saturday, is expected to reduce the cost of power by 25-30 paise per unit, officials and experts involved in the revision of the earlier mandate for installation of FGD (flue gas desulphurisation) units at all power plants said. The new norm lets off the hook 79% of the country's thermal generation capacity, a fact that environmental activists have used to criticise the revision. But officials argued that the 'evidence-based recalibration' makes the policy 'focused, efficient and climate-conscious." For example, they said, under the revised policy, new plants in critically polluted areas or non-attainment cities will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis instead of an omnibus application that would push up the cost of power. The notification justified the revision, saying it is in line with the analysis by the Central Pollution Control Board, which found increased carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the operation of existing control measures. Additionally, studies by IIT-Delhi, CSIR-NEERI and the National Institute of Advanced Studies put ambient sulphur dioxide levels in most parts of the country within the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Power producers have been opposing the blanket FGD mandate for all plants due to the high cost involved. Industry estimates put the cost of installing FGDs at all power plants at Rs 2.5 lakh crore, or Rs 1.2 crore per megawatt. This, industry representatives had said, would jack up tariff for consumers. Additionally, the average timeline of 45 days for each unit was also cited as a threat to grid stability during peak seasons. Differentiated compliance based on proximity to urban populations and the sulphur content of the coal used will ease the burden on power producers, industry executives said. Indian coal typically has a sulphur content of less than 0.5% and due to high stack heights and favourable meteorological conditions, dispersion of SO2 is efficient. Measurements across multiple cities showed sulphur oxide levels ranging between 3 and 20 micrograms per cubic meter, significantly below the NAAQS threshold of 80 micrograms per cubic meter. The officials said studies had also questioned the environmental and economic efficacy of a universal FGD mandate in the Indian context. No more fixed highway targets, states can prioritise projects
New Delhi: In a significant shift in strategy, the ministry of road transport and highways has done away with fixed targets for states and will now collaborate with them on floating targets for the construction of national highways, expressways and greenfield corridors passing through states. "The idea is to get projects off the ground to avoid delays that often result in huge time and cost overrun," the official added. "It is a win-win for both Centre as well as states. There will be a bouquet of roads offered to states for development and states will be allowed to proceed with projects where they see some progress," an industry expert said, adding this will help fast-track completion of pending projects also. While construction of national highways is primarily the responsibility of the ministry of road transport and highway, which works through its autonomous body the National Highways Authority of India, states assist the central government with land acquisition, rehabilitation of project-affected people and obtaining various clearances. The government has set the target of constructing 10,000 km of highways in 2025-26, lower than the 10,421 km target set for 2024-25. Even the monetisation target for the current financial year has been scaled down to ₹30,000 crore compared to the target of ₹39,000 crore set for the preceding year. Besides, the ministry of road transport and highways allocates funds for state governments and union territories (UTs) for development and maintenance of state roads under the Central Road & Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme. The ministry has allocated ₹9,030 crore under the scheme in 2024-25.
