Heart attack vs Cardiac arrest
A heart attack occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, become partially, or fully blocked.
This blockage reduces or stops the flow of oxygen-rich blood to part of the heart, causing damage or death to that area of the heart muscle. In contrast, sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical problem where the heart suddenly stops beating properly. The heart's electrical system malfunctions, causing the heart to stop pumping blood effectively, leading to a sudden loss of heart function and breathing.
Causes behind the conditions
Heart attacks are mainly caused by blockages in the coronary arteries due to blood clots or buildup of fatty deposits (atherosclerosis).
This blockage starves part of the heart muscle of oxygen, eventually dying, even though the patient might survive. Cardiac arrest, however, is usually caused by an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation, which disrupts the heart's electrical signals and stops the heartbeat suddenly.
While a heart attack can sometimes trigger cardiac arrest, cardiac arrest can also occur due to other causes like electrical problems, trauma, or severe electrolyte imbalances.

Symptoms
Heart attacks often come with warning signs that may start slowly or suddenly, even months before. Common symptoms include chest pain or discomfort (often described as pressure, squeezing, or fullness), pain radiating to the arms, neck, jaw, or back, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, and lightheadedness. These symptoms can last for minutes or come and go. Cardiac arrest, on the other hand, usually happens without warning.
The person suddenly collapses, loses consciousness, stops breathing or shows abnormal gasping breaths, and has no pulse. Unlike heart attacks, cardiac arrest does not typically cause chest pain or sweating beforehand.
What happens to the patient
During a heart attack, the heart usually continues to beat, although it may be weak or irregular. The person remains conscious and may feel pain or discomfort but does not (always) lose consciousness immediately.
In sudden cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating effectively, so blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. This causes the person to collapse instantl, and lose consciousness within seconds.
Without immediate treatment, cardiac arrest leads to death within minutes, and hence the window to save someone is extremely narrow.
Emergency treatment
Both conditions are medical emergencies, and require immediate treatment.
For heart attack, treatments include medications to dissolve clots, angioplasty to open blocked arteries, or surgery. Prompt treatment can limit heart muscle damage and improve survival. Cardiac arrest demands immediate life-saving actions (and within minutes), calling emergency services, starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to keep blood flowing, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to restore a normal heartbeat.
Defibrillation is critical because cardiac arrest is caused by an electrical problem, and only an electric shock can restart the heart.
Subtle signs
Unfortunately, subtle signs of cardiac arrest are easy to ignore (if they occur at all that is), but recognizing them is crucial for timely intervention. These can include unusual fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations, and even nausea or back pain, particularly in women. These can start weeks, or even months before the cardiac arrest, and can be chronic, or sporadic. Shefali Jariwala Death: "Anti-Ageing Medicines Could Be A Major Reason For Cardiac Arrest," Says Source
New Delhi: Actor and model Shefali Jariwala died late Friday, and her last rites were performed in Mumbai on Saturday evening, with close family members and friends in attendance. Several key details have emerged in the ongoing investigation into the sudden death of actress Shefali Jariwala. According to sources, police have gathered important information based on witness statements, seized evidence and preliminary forensic inputs. "Shefali was regularly consuming anti-ageing medicines for the last seven-eight years. There was a puja at home on June 27, due to which Shefali was fasting. Despite this, she took an injection of anti-ageing medicine in the afternoon of the same day. These medicines were advised to her by a doctor years ago, and since then she has been taking this treatment every month. So far in the police investigation, it has come to light that these medicines could be a major reason for cardiac arrest," the source told NDTV. The timeline of events suggests that Shefali's health deteriorated between 10 and 11 PM on June 27. The source added, "Between 10 and 11 pm, Shefali's health suddenly deteriorated. The body started trembling and she fell unconscious. She was immediately taken to the hospital. At that time, Shefali, her husband Parag, mother and some other people were present at home." The forensic team has collected various items from the residence as part of the probe. They continued, "The forensic team has seized a variety of medicines from the house, including anti-ageing vials, vitamin supplements and gastric pills." As part of the ongoing investigation, statements from multiple people have been recorded. "So far, the police have recorded the statements of 8 people in this case, including family members, domestic servants and doctors from Bellevue Hospital. The investigation has not found any signs of dispute or quarrel so far. Neurologist To NDTV On Shefali Jariwala Cause Of Death: "Glutathione May Result In Cardiac Issues, Epilepsy Can Lead To Sudden Death"
New Delhi: Following the news of actor-model Shefali Jariwala's untimely death, an old interview of her's has resurfaced in which she spoke about her long battle with epilepsy and how it affected her career. According to sources, Shefali Jariwala had been undergoing special treatment for the past five to six years to maintain a youthful appearance. The medicines used in the process mainly included Vitamin C and Glutathione. Dr Rahul Chawla, Consultant Neurologist, Institute of Brain and Spine has now shared his take and advice on the relationship between epilepsy and cardiac arrest and the use of Glutathione with its adverse effects. He told NDTV, "Regarding IV Glutathione and IV detoxifying drips, they are not guideline recommended. They have no high-quality evidence showing any effect. They do have their harmful adverse effects including cardiac conduction abnormalities, arrhythmia, and hypotension. There have been multiple case reports where patients have died after taking those IV detoxifying drips and probably sudden collapse or sudden hypotension was the reason behind those deaths. However, we cannot correlate any sudden cardiac death of a person with a history of having glutathione or detox drips." "One thing to be remembered is that any supplement that seems too good to be true and does not have RCT or Meta-analysis level of evidence, is not recommended by guidelines and has potential adverse effects, should not be used," concluded the Consultant Neurologist. Glutathione is a drug often used for skin fairness and detoxification. Doctors have stated that these medications do not have a direct impact on the heart, and are typically used for cosmetic enhancement only. As of now, the actual cause of death will be known only after the forensic and post-mortem reports are out. Shefali Jariwala had earlier opened up on her history with epilepsy which she had been suffering from since the age of 15. Medical professionals have said that SUDEP or Sudden Unexplained Death in a condition like Epilepsy is possible. It is rare, however can happen when it leads to fatal heart complications. In an earlier interview with The Times of India, Shefali revealed that she was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15. "I had an epilepsy seizure at the age of 15. I remember at that time I was under tremendous pressure to do well in my studies. Stress and anxiety can lead to seizures. It's interrelated; you could get a seizure due to depression and vice versa," she said. SUDEP happens at night when the patient is lying down, and may have a seizure- leading to a cardiac arrest. Patients who have epilepsy may have recurrent seizures and if not treated timely, such patients may die. It leads to instantaneous death and there are no chances of recovery. Shefali Jariwala reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest at her Mumbai residence late Friday. Parag Tyagi rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. As of now, a post-mortem is done and the results are awaited to confirm the cause behind her death.
