The report submitted to the government on July 2 stated that current data does not support the belief that "long covid" is responsible for the rise in sudden cardiovascular events among the young.
"Rather, a rise in the prevalence of the common risk factors that lead to cardiovascular disease (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, dyslipidemia) is the best explanation for the rise in sudden cardiovascular events." "The observational study conducted at Jayadeva Hospital, did not find any association between premature cardiovascular disease and a prior history of Covid-19 infection or Covid vaccination. Most studies/ reports published in the rest of the world also have not found any causal association between Covid vaccination and sudden cardiovascular events. On the contrary, covid vaccination has been shown to be protective against cardiac events in the long term," it said.

Recently, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had suggested that the heart attack deaths in Hassan district may be linked to the vaccination drive.
He also claimed that the vaccines were 'hastily' approved.
His statement drew sharp criticism from the BJP and the likes of Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
According to the panel report, there is no single cause behind the observed rise in sudden cardiac deaths. Rather, it appears to be a multifactorial issue, with behavourial, genetic, and environmental risks.
While in the immediate post-covid phase, there is an increase in the incidence of sudden cardiovascular events due to a pro-inflammatory state, the same cannot be held to be true in the long term (less than 1 year). It is three years since the end of the pandemic.
Citing the study by the experts' committee, the report stated that although conventional risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and smoking remain prevalent in a majority of patients, a significant minority of patients presented with none of these, suggesting the possible involvement of novel or under-recognised mechanisms.
The conclusion was drawn after observing 251 patients below the age of 45 who presented with heart problems at the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences between April 1, 2025 and May 31, 2025. Patients selected for the study were interviewed by para-medical staff and a proforma was filled up.
The report cited that detailed risk factor profile analysis was done specifically, including past history of Covid-19 infection - in detail including symptoms, hospitalisation, severity, ventilatory support requirement.
Similarly, detailed history regarding Covid-19 vaccination, including number of doses, vaccine brand, vaccine adverse events, were taken.
In the wake of these findings, the committee has recommended a multifaceted
public health strategy
, saying it is essential.
"This should include establishing a robust surveillance system for sudden cardiac deaths, particularly among young adults, implementing autopsy-based registries, and integrating early cardiovascular screening at the school level. Importantly, large-scale, prospective, multicentric studies are needed to better delineate the long-term cardiovascular effects of both COVID-19 infection and vaccination," it added.

1 2 3 Nagpur: A joint delegation of doctors led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nagpur, submitted a memorandum to the chief minister through the district collector's office, strongly opposing a recent decision of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) allowing homeopathic doctors to register as allopathic practitioners. The representation was handed over to Anup Khande, resident district collector (RDC), Nagpur. The memorandum, signed by IMA Nagpur president Dr Rajesh Sawarbandhe and secretary Dr Jitendra Sahu, warns that the MMC's notification dated June 30, allowing homeopaths who complete a short 'Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP)' to register under MMC, poses a serious threat to public health and patient safety. "The MMC was created exclusively to regulate MBBS and higher qualified allopathic doctors. Permitting lateral entry from a completely different system undermines medical ethics and public trust," the memorandum states. It adds that the one-year CCMP course cannot equate to years of rigorous MBBS education and clinical training. Misdiagnosed with blood cancer, septuagenarian turns out to be anaemic; treated with diet correction
Pune: A 70-year-old woman from Mumbai, misdiagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a type of blood cancer specifically affecting the bone marrow, later turned out to be a case of chronic anaemia brought on by metabolic syndrome. The patient was a long-term hypertensive, obese and pre-diabetic with symptoms such as breathlessness and persistent fatigue similar to that of MDS. While a biopsy was not possible given her age and comorbidities, her treating doctor misdiagnosed her as an inconclusive case of MDS and suggested a bone marrow transplant. However, later when she was brought to Dr Vijaya Ramanan, haematologist, Yashoda Haematology Clinic, in June 2022, she was found to be a case of cytopenia or chronic anemia. She was also taking initially suggested erythropoietin injections twice a week for almost a year, which cost the family Rs40,000 per month. The family was also asked to arrange money for a bone marrow transplant. "Once I ruled out MDS, I immediately brought in radical changes in her diet and lifestyle," Dr Ramanan said. "I eliminated gluten by restricting her to jowar and rajgira rotis, sugar, packaged foods, and dairy products (except a couple of teaspoons of milk in tea). Dosas, idlis, chillas all made of various pulses or millets along with some brown rice were added to her diet apart from a lot of green vegetables." The woman's life changed remarkably. During her last follow-up visit with me in May 2025, her serum insulin came down to a very respectable 9. She has also been taken off metformin and medication for uric acid completely. Her thyroid medication has been reduced, haemoglobin has been stable, and in general, she feels more active and energetic than before," he added. City-based haematologists said that such a misdiagnosis is a rare thing, and non-specialists must avoid declaring MDS in a patient. Dr Deepak R Patil, clinical haematologist, DPU Super Speciality Hospital, said, "Chronic anemia is one of the commonest presentations of MDS which is often under-diagnosed in adults, especially elderly. Diagnosis of MDS should preferably be done by a haematologist. Symptoms in haematological disorders are overlapping, hence involving a haematologist is always a prudent course of action. Chronic anemia is a common condition in elderly. Misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis both are not uncommon to see in this age group."
