Dementia and ‘the virus of fame': Erica Jong's daughter maps mother's decline

Novelist and poet Erica Jong helped bring unvarnished female sexual desire into the literary mainstream. Now her daughter, writer Molly Jong-Fast, is mapping her mother's decline.
'How to Lose Your Mother: A Daughter's Memoir,' published by Viking on Tuesday, June 3, is about Jong's dementia and how Jong-Fast has cared for her 83-year-old mother, the author of 'Fear of Flying,' 'How to Save Your Own Life' and 'Parachutes and Kisses.'
The book comes amid a wave of so-called nepo baby memoirs from Tom Hanks' daughter, Prince Harry and Lena Dunham, among others. Jong-Fast acknowledges her place in the trend.
'It is a huge advantage to be the child of a famous writer,' she told Vogue. At the same time, she continued, 'mostly the world doesn't necessarily want you to succeed. You just have to work super-hard and you have to be incredibly kind to everyone, which sometimes I do, and occasionally I fail (at).'
In the book, excerpted in Vanity Fair, Jong-Fast reveals how fame warped her mother.
'Even years after people stopped coming up to us in stores, even years after she slipped from the public consciousness, the virus of fame had made her someone different. Becoming normal like the rest of us, the journey to unfamousness, was for her an event so strange and stressful, so damaging to her ego, that she was never able to process it,' Jong-Fast writes.
She saw her grandfather, the novelist Howard Fast, suffer a similar fate.
'I never knew my mother or grandfather in the height of their respective fames, but I did know them at the end, when they were desperately trying to claw fame back from the writers who, they believed, had taken it from them,' she says in the book.
Jong-Fast's previous books include two novels, 'Normal Girl' and 'The Social Climber's Handbook' as well as another memoir, 'The Sex Doctors in the Basement: True Stories from a Semi-Celebrity Childhood.' She's also a journalist, podcaster and political commentator.

Who Is Tate McRae's Bodyguard?

As you might have noticed, fans have been speculating about the status of Tate McRae and The Kid Laroi's relationship for a minute now despite the fact that they're pretty clearly still together (he literally liked her most recent Instagram post!!!!). Buuut DeuxMoi just dropped pics of Tate lounging in a bikini on a boat with friends. Including someone that's been identified—but not confirmed—as her body guard, who was photographed getting close to the star. For what it's worth, it's possible this man was simply trying to shield Tate from being photographed by paps, and the pics ended up looking more intimate than they were! As people put it in the comments: I mean, that ^ seems like the most likely scenario, but judge for yourself this way! And before we go, quick reminder that Tate and The Kid Laroi started dating in 2024 and have been pretty public with their relationship—stepping out for multiple red carpets and talking about their relationship (subtly, but still!) in interviews. Their last public appearance was at the Vanity Fair Oscar party back in March.

Ahead of Her Real Housewives Debut, I Rewatched The Rachel Zoe Project

Last month, stylist, entrepreneur, and reality TV star Rachel Zoe announced that she will be joining season 15 of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. 'It's been a while, and you've been asking me to come back to television,' Zoe said in an Instagram video revealing the news. 'Really excited to be with all of you again and I hope you are too, so let's have some fun!' Her return to Bravo marks Zoe's first major TV project since starring in her own show, The Rachel Zoe Project, which aired from 2008 to 2013. Following Zoe as she styled celebrity clients and built her own fashion empire, the hit series raised a whole generation of fashion enthusiasts—so, what better time to give the show a rewatch than now, in anticipation of her grand Housewives comeback? Below, read on for 33 thoughts I had watching the pilot episode of The Rachel Zoe Project. (Buckle up: It's a wild ride.) 1. 'I'm Rachel Zoe, and I'm a stylist.' Iconic opening line. I remember first watching the show, and being totally obsessed with just how fabulous she and her career were. 2. We meet Rachel as she is beginning to expand her business and continue styling celebrity clients for awards season. Bring on the fashion! 3. I forgot that 'I die' was one of Rachel Zoe's catch phrases. And 'Ba-na-nas.' 4. We are introduced to her husband, Rodger, and her employees Taylor Jacobson and Brad Goreski. (Iconic.) 5. 'For me, life is a red carpet,' Rachel says. Same. 6. Rachel is talking about how she 'unfortunately' runs her business from her house. Sounds like a dream scenario to me, no? Would love to take calls from bed. 7. Taylor's bleach blonde hair and side bangs is burned into my memory. The look is so 2008. I loved her grungy rock-and-roll style. 8. Taylor had such an attitude. I would not want to be on her bad side. 9. Brad is the new guy on the team. His varsity tennis sweater and glasses are so nerdy-chic. I love. 10. 'He comes from Vogue and has impeccable style,' Rachel says of Brad. We love Vogue!

Sezgin Berlin Spring 2026 Collection

'The aim of this collection is to position ourselves as a fashion label. We are more than just 'the ones with the sweater,'' said Sezgin Kivrim during his recent presentation, looking at the eight models next to him wearing his new collection. To understand what he means, we need to take a brief look back to last year. September 2024, Vogue's first Forces of Fashion event in Berlin was coming up, and I was looking for an outfit by a local designer to wear. At the time, a nasty debate about deportations was raging in Germany. Kivrim, a graduate of the renowned UdK (University of the Arts) in Berlin, repeatedly referenced his Kurdish heritage in his fashion; the Kurdish diaspora in Germany is one of the largest in the world. I visited him in his studio, had him explain his work in more detail, and finally chose a crochet sweater that featured the Kurdish flag. I wore the sweater to our event, and photos of me in it alongside prominent figures such as Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, Winnie Harlow, Francesco Risso, and Paloma Elsesser were posted on social media. What was meant as a subtle sign on my part, as a gesture of local support, sparked a wave of enthusiasm for the sweater within the Kurdish community worldwide, and it was even reported on a Kurdish news show in Australia. The sweater became famous. For Kivrim, this is now both a blessing and a curse, because even though the sweater made the label more known, Sezgin wants to show his full range as a designer and not be reduced to one garment. The collection he is now presenting in Berlin is the starting point. Kivrim now works with a partner: He and Angelina Schwarzkopf have been friends for over 10 years and share the tasks. In theory, he does the design and she takes care of the operational side, but in reality, they both do everything, and they are particularly proud that the new collection reflects both of their aesthetics. There are only eight looks, which have been carefully chosen and are following the style of the brand: Kivrim has worked with mesh in the past, and so there are now several garments made from this material, such as a dress in a very light pastel pink, which is held together at the top by a thin strap with a diagonal cut across the back. The other strap is extra-long and wider and is worn around the neck as a thin scarf. The skirt part of the dress has ruffles.
