Intense competition at WCGC Malaysia qualifier as top golfers eye national final
The event saw a full field of 132 corporate golfers, with Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the royal patron of WCGC Malaysia, joining the players on the tee.
A splash of mid-morning rain threatened to derail proceedings, but the weather cleared, allowing the enthusiastic field to return to action in much enjoyable conditions.
The competition was tightly contested, with the top five pairs finishing with the maximum allowable score of 42 Stableford points. These teams will move on to the national final at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club in September.
Leading the way were the pairing of Sasi Kumar Subramaniam (4) and Selvan Subramaniam (7) of Cyberlan Integral Sdn Bhd, who received a Cuckoo Inductrio Hybrid Induction Hob each for their efforts.
In second place was the team of Gavin Fung (4) and Lim Giin Hoong (9), who each walked home with a Huawei GT5 Pro watch. The Universiti Putra Malaysia pairing of Dr Zailani Khuzaimah (6) and Dr Fadzrul Abbas (8) came in third, receiving each a Fella Design Lazio bench.
Fourth place went to the team of Wong Ka Hei (6) and Loh Hung Mun (8) from Paint Bomber Malaysia, who picked up a Bridgestone 24B wedge respectively.
Second time proved a charm for the Perwira Global Enterprise partnership of Ahmad Marzuki Kamaruzaman (5) and Tengku Izharudin Tengku Ismail (11), as they made amends for a disappointing showing in the second qualifying round by securing fifth place, walking home in style with a pair of Skechers GoGolf shoes each.
The fourth and final qualifying round will take place at Templer Park Country Club on August 21, where five more teams will secure their spots in the national final.
The winning pair at the national final will represent Malaysia at the WCGC World Final in Shanghai, China, from October 19 to 23.

Today's semi-final victory is the 11th time that Aaron-Wooi Yik have beaten the Indian pair in 14 encounters. The Malaysians, who are two-time Olympic bronze medallists, also set a record by being the first men's doubles pair in the world to qualify for the finals of a World Tour Super 1000 event six times. They will be making their second appearance in the China Open final after finishing as runners-up in 2023 and will be gunning for their fourth title this year after having won the Thailand Open, Singapore Open and the Badminton Asia Championships. The tournament offers a total prize money of US$2 million (RM8.4 million), with winners in the doubles events taking home US$148,000 (RM624,000) and the runners-up US$70,000 (RM295,146). The losing semi-finalists will each get US$28,000 (RM118,000).

Malaysians in fine form at Macau Open

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysian shuttlers served a surprise at the Macau Open today by booking four slots in the semi-finals, including an all-Malaysian encounter in the men's doubles category. The five semi-finalists are mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing, men's doubles pairs Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King and Chong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri, and men's singles player Justin Hoh. The 52nd ranked Hon Jian-Haikal created the biggest upset after they overcame India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-14, 13-21, 22-20 in an hour-long battle. Hon Jian-Haikal's win assures Malaysia of a spot in the final as they will take on compatriots Wan Arif-Roy King in one of the semi-final matches. Wong-Pei Jing, who are No 126 in the world rankings, have been outstanding en route to the semi-finals. They created a major upset in their quarter-final match against China's world No 12 pair Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi, winning 21-12, 17-21, 21-18. ‘World No. 2 just a number': M. Thinaah says consistency matters most
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — National women's doubles ace M. Thinaah is more concerned with consistency than occupying the world number two ranking with her partner, Pearly Tan. The 27-year-old Thinaah said their priority is to remain consistent on the court and get positive results in every competitive outing. 'For me, being world number two is just a number. For us, the main thing is to continue performing consistently and always supporting each other every time we take to the court,' she told reporters after a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara here today. Thinaah also said that their preparation is proceeding smoothly ahead of the 2025 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships scheduled to be held in Paris from Aug 25 to Sept 1. 'Actually, we are really excited to be back on court training together... definitely, the world meet is a big tournament and one that we are really excited to be competing in. We are just looking forward to it and preparing well for it,' she said. On Tuesday (July 29), Pearly-Thinaah moved up one spot for a career-high world number two position in the latest BWF rankings. They have performed consistently this season — winning the Thailand Open, emerging runners-up in the Indonesia Open, advancing to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters and qualifying for the last eight of the Singapore Open.
