SHO suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with Gopal Khemka's murder

The Bihar Police on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) suspended a station house officer (SHO) for dereliction of duty in connection with the murder of Patna-based industrialist Gopal Khemka. The order of suspension of Gandhi Maidan Police Station SHO Rajesh Kumar was issued by Central Range (Patna) Inspector General (IG) Jitendra Rana, an officer said. "Gandhi Maidan PS SHO was suspended for dereliction of duty in connection with the murder of industrialist Gopal Khemka," Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma told PTI. There are other cases in which the SHO's investigation was found unsatisfactory, the SSP said. Khemka was shot dead outside his residence in Patna by a motorcycle-borne assailant at 11.40 pm on July 4, seven years after miscreants had gunned down his son in Hajipur. The incident had taken place near the gate of Khemka's house in the Gandhi Maidan locality as he was about to alight from his car. Later, the police arrested two persons, including the gunman, in connection with the incident. Khemka was reportedly associated with the BJP.

'Saw On News I Ran Over Fauja Singh': NRI Who Hit Runner With Fortuner

Chandigarh: A Canada-based man arrested for allegedly running over Fauja Singh has told the police that he didn't know the victim was the world's oldest marathoner, sources said on Wednesday. The accused, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, said that he learnt about the death of 114-year-old Singh through the news. The 26-year-old was arrested for allegedly ramming his car into Singh, popularly known as 'Turbaned Tornado', on a highway in the veteran runner's native village of Bias in Punjab's Jalandhar district on Monday. Dhillon was caught at his Kartarpur home, and his vehicle, a Punjab-registered Toyota Fortuner, has also been seized. The accused had come to India on June 23, senior police officer Harvinder Singh Virk told a press conference after his arrest. Dhillon had gone to Canada on a tourist visa but got a work permit there, which is valid till 2027, the officer said. He said that Dhillon was speeding as he was in a hurry for some work. "He got scared after hitting Fauja Singh, and that is why he did not stop his car at the spot," Mr Virk said. Mr Virk said it was Dhillon's responsibility to stop the vehicle at the time of the accident and should have taken Fauja Singh to a hospital. How Fauja Singh Killer Was Arrested Multiple teams of the police zeroed in on Amritpal Singh Dhillon after his car was identified using CCTV footage. "We found some parts of the car from the crime scene. The pieces were then shown to the experts, who said the vehicle was an old model of a Toyota Fortuner," Mr Virk told reporters. "When we scanned the CCTV, the part recovered was missing from a Fortuner vehicle. We were then confident that the accident happened with the said vehicle," he said. The number plate revealed that the vehicle was registered in the name of Varinder Singh, a resident of Kapurthala. The police then interrogated Singh, who said he had sold his car to the accused. Dhillon was then caught in his village and admitted to the crime. He also told police that he had got one of the tyres of the SUV changed on the day of the incident.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday in Bias village in Punjab's Jalandhar district, where Fauja Singh was walking along the Jalandhar–Pathankot highway. A Canada-based man arrested for allegedly running over Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathoner, has told the police he was unaware of the victim's identity until he saw the news, reported NDTV. The accused, Amritpal Singh Dhillon (26), claimed during interrogation that he learned the 114-year-old man he had fatally hit was a global sporting icon only after the incident was reported in the media. Dhillon was arrested on Tuesday night from his residence in Kartarpur, Punjab, after being tracked through CCTV footage and fragments of his Toyota Fortuner's headlight recovered from the accident site. The vehicle, which had reportedly changed hands multiple times, was also seized. The tragic incident occurred on Monday in Bias village in Punjab's Jalandhar district, where Fauja Singh was walking along the Jalandhar–Pathankot highway. According to eyewitnesses, Singh was flung five to seven feet in the air after being struck by the speeding SUV. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Speaking at a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harvinder Singh Virk said Dhillon was speeding at the time of the accident as he was 'in a hurry for some work." The accused also told police he had replaced one of the tyres of his SUV on the day of the incident. 'He got scared after hitting Fauja Singh and did not stop the car at the spot," Virk said, adding, 'It was his responsibility to stop and take the victim to a hospital." Police confirmed that Dhillon had returned to India from Canada on June 23. He had initially gone abroad on a tourist visa and later acquired a work permit valid until 2027. An FIR has been registered against him under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The death of Fauja Singh, affectionately known as the 'Turbaned Tornado," has triggered an outpouring of grief across the nation and the global Sikh community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini all paid tribute to the legendary athlete, hailing his legacy and inspirational life. The Punjab Assembly also honoured Singh with a condolence motion on the final day of its special session. Born in 1911 in a farming family, Fauja Singh defied all odds to begin his marathon career at the age of 89. He later became the first centenarian to complete a full marathon, earning multiple age-group world records. His accomplishments in cities like London, New York, Toronto, and Hong Kong turned him into a symbol of resilience, health, and inspiration for generations. In 2011, an invitational marathon in Toronto was named in his honour, where he set several records at the age of 100. After spending most of his later years in the UK, Singh returned to India about three years ago. Just last year, he joined Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in a symbolic walkathon to raise awareness about drug abuse. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
