OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has a plan to overhaul college education – by embedding its artificial intelligence tools in every facet of campus life.
If the company's strategy succeeds, universities would give students AI assistants to help guide and tutor them from orientation day through graduation. Professors would provide customized AI study bots for each class. Career services would offer recruiter chatbots for students to practice job interviews. And undergrads could turn on a chatbot's voice mode to be quizzed aloud before a test.

'Our vision is that, over time, AI would become part of the core infrastructure of higher education,' Leah Belsky, OpenAI's vice president of education, said in an interview. In the same way that colleges give students school email accounts, she said, soon 'every student who comes to campus would have access to their personalized AI account.'
To spread chatbots on campuses, OpenAI is selling premium AI services to universities for faculty and student use. It is also running marketing campaigns aimed at getting students who have never used chatbots to try ChatGPT.
Some universities, including the University of Maryland and California State University, are already working to make AI tools part of students' everyday experiences. In early June, Duke University began offering unlimited ChatGPT access to students, faculty and staff. The school also introduced a university platform, called DukeGPT, with AI tools developed by Duke.
OpenAI's campaign is part of an escalating AI arms race among tech giants to win over universities and students with their chatbots. The company is following in the footsteps of rivals like Google and Microsoft that have for years pushed to get their computers and software into schools, and court students as future customers.
The competition is so heated that Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, and Elon Musk, who founded the rival xAI, posted dueling announcements on social media this spring offering free premium AI services for college students during exam period. Then Google upped the ante, announcing free student access to its premium chatbot service 'through finals 2026'.
OpenAI ignited the recent AI education trend. In late 2022, the company's rollout of ChatGPT, which can produce human-sounding essays and term papers, helped set off a wave of chatbot-fueled cheating. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, which are trained on large databases of texts, also make stuff up, which can mislead students.
Less than three years later, millions of college students regularly use AI chatbots as research, writing, computer programming and idea-generating aides. Now OpenAI is capitalizing on ChatGPT's popularity to promote the company's AI services to universities as the new infrastructure for college education.
OpenAI's service for universities, ChatGPT Edu, offers more features, including certain privacy protections, than the company's free chatbot. ChatGPT Edu also enables faculty and staff to create custom chatbots for university use. (OpenAI offers consumers premium versions of its chatbot for a monthly fee.)
OpenAI's push to AI-ify college education amounts to a national experiment on millions of students. The use of these chatbots in schools is so new that their potential long-term educational benefits, and possible side effects, are not yet established.
A few early studies have found that outsourcing tasks like research and writing to chatbots can diminish skills like critical thinking. And some critics argue that colleges going all-in on chatbots are glossing over issues like societal risks, AI labor exploitation and environmental costs.
OpenAI's campus marketing effort comes as unemployment has increased among recent college graduates – particularly in fields like software engineering, where AI is now automating some tasks previously done by humans. In hopes of boosting students' career prospects, some universities are racing to provide AI tools and training.
California State University announced this year that it was making ChatGPT available to more than 460,000 students across its 23 campuses to help prepare them for 'California's future AI-driven economy'. Cal State said the effort would help make the school 'the nation's first and largest AI-empowered university system.'
Some universities say they are embracing the new AI tools in part because they want their schools to help guide, and develop guardrails for, the technologies.
'You're worried about the ecological concerns. You're worried about misinformation and bias,' Edmund Clark, the chief information officer of California State University, said at a recent education conference in San Diego. 'Well, join in. Help us shape the future.'
Last spring, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Edu, its first product for universities, which offers access to the company's latest AI. Paying clients like universities also get more privacy: OpenAI says it does not use the information that students, faculty and administrators enter into ChatGPT Edu to train its AI.

Last fall, OpenAI hired Belsky to oversee its education efforts. An ed tech startup veteran, she previously worked at Coursera, which offers college and professional training courses.
She is pursuing a two-pronged strategy: marketing OpenAI's premium services to universities for a fee while advertising free ChatGPT directly to students. OpenAI also convened a panel of college students recently to help get their peers to start using the tech.
Among those students are power users like Delphine Tai-Beauchamp, a computer science major at the University of California, Irvine. She has used the chatbot to explain complicated course concepts, as well as help explain coding errors and make charts diagraming the connections between ideas.
'I wouldn't recommend students use AI to avoid the hard parts of learning,' Tai-Beauchamp said. She did recommend students try AI as a study aid. 'Ask it to explain something five different ways.'
Belsky said these kinds of suggestions helped the company create its first billboard campaign aimed at college students.
'Can you quiz me on the muscles of the leg?' asked one ChatGPT billboard, posted this spring in Chicago. 'Give me a guide for mastering this Calc 101 syllabus,' another said.
Belsky said OpenAI had also begun funding research into the educational effects of its chatbots.
'The challenge is, how do you actually identify what are the use cases for AI in the university that are most impactful?' Belsky said during a December AI event at Cornell Tech in New York City. 'And then how do you replicate those best practices across the ecosystem?'
Some faculty members have already built custom chatbots for their students by uploading course materials like their lecture notes, slides, videos and quizzes into ChatGPT.
Jared DeForest, the chair of environmental and plant biology at Ohio University, created his own tutoring bot, called SoilSage, which can answer students' questions based on his published research papers and science knowledge. Limiting the chatbot to trusted information sources has improved its accuracy, he said.
'The curated chatbot allows me to control the information in there to get the product that I want at the college level,' DeForest said.
But even when trained on specific course materials, AI can make mistakes. In a new study – 'Can AI Hold Office Hours?' – law school professors uploaded a patent law casebook into AI models from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. Then they asked dozens of patent law questions based on the casebook and found that all three AI chatbots made 'significant' legal errors that could be 'harmful for learning.'
'This is a good way to lead students astray,' said Jonathan S. Masur, a professor at the University of Chicago Law School and a co-author of the study. 'So I think that everyone needs to take a little bit of a deep breath and slow down.'
OpenAI said the 250,000-word casebook used for the study was more than twice the length of text that its GPT-4o model can process at once. Anthropic said the study had limited usefulness because it did not compare the AI with human performance. Google said its model accuracy had improved since the study was conducted.
Belsky said a new 'memory' feature, which retains and can refer to previous interactions with a user, would help ChatGPT tailor its responses to students over time and make the AI 'more valuable as you grow and learn.'
Privacy experts warn that this kind of tracking feature raises concerns about long-term tech company surveillance.
In the same way that many students today convert their school-issued Gmail accounts into personal accounts when they graduate, Belsky envisions graduating students bringing their AI chatbots into their workplaces and using them for life.

By the time Emily Strand and Will Christiansen exchange vows this fall, most of the tasks on their wedding to-do list will have been created, organised and completed thanks to artificial intelligence. These include everything from a seating chart to a personalised 70-word crossword puzzle for their Oct 11 wedding at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada. AI is helping them manage their budget and found their officiant and cake maker, too. Strand's secret for getting it all done? Specificity. 'I asked ChatGPT to list, as a bride, common and uncommon things I needed to do to plan a DIY, 120-person, outdoor ceremony in Las Vegas in October 2025,' said Strand, 31, a public defender for Clark County, Nevada. Within seconds it spit out an Excel document listing 200 suggestions, including ideas from blog posts, Reddit and Google Crowdsource. 'Once it suggested vendors,' Strand said, 'I had AI write my query letters to them.' She also asked for advice on improving her wedding website. What probably would have taken her 250 hours of research overall, she said, was completed by AI in about an hour. Wedding planning has long been time-consuming and stressful, filled with meticulous details and endless decision making. AI is transforming the process by providing couples and event planners with many useful tools. Among them: real-time cost analyses and budget tracking; virtual styling assistants; algorithms for seating; automated RSVP reminders; and augmented reality, or AR, which can allow couples to tour venues remotely. Anne Chang, 32, a freelance DJ from New York City, said she wanted to 'simplify and optimise' the planning for her five-day bachelorette party in Ibiza, Spain, and turned to an AI tool on Bridesmaid for Hire, a wedding service platform. Seconds after plugging in some basic information, a six-page itinerary was produced that 'factored in that the night we're going to a club, our following morning would be a late rise and breakfast, and a chill beach day,' Chang said. She paid US$35 (RM149) for the assistance. The itinerary offered recommendations and featured a 'fun meter' for each activity. Other unexpected touches included group photo shoot suggestions and locations, a packing checklist, emergency precautions and names of the nearest hospitals. Julia Lynch, 31, and Alex Eckstein, 30, of New York City, used the same site, but a different tool to create a seating chart for their 300 guests, who are attending their wedding Aug 23 at the Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram, New York, where Eckstein, is a partner. 'The complexities of who to seat people next to is overwhelming,' said Lynch, a personal brand strategist. After inputting the names and details about their guests, the program created two seating charts, for two meals that will be served on different nights, taking into account guests' commonalities and family dynamics. 'The tool gave me suggestions for designs, layouts and types of tables within the parameters of our tent,' said Lynch, who chose round tables for easier conversation. She described the experience as fun and, at US$9 (RM38), inexpensive. Though her wedding planner is full service, she said she wanted to optimise his time. 'This took seconds and eliminated the need for him to do the work,' she said. Last year Jen Glantz, a professional vows writer who started Bridesmaid for Hire in 2014, added an AI speechwriting component to her human-driven offerings. Since introducing the tool, around 1,300 people opted for a US$35 (RM149) AI speech, versus 20 people who each hired Glantz to write them for US$375 (RM1,595). Now 10 different AI tools, including a 24-hour hotline that people call for advice, are available, and account for 70% of her business. 'The hotline gives users actionable advice and steps they can take, with a bit of sympathy in my trained voice and expertise,' she said. 'For my customers, AI is making this industry more personalised, affordable, faster, and efficient.' Popular wedding platforms like the Knot, Minted and Canva are also incorporating AI into their sites. Zola, the wedding website, added two AI programs last year: Split the Decisions, which helps couples divide wedding planning responsibilities, and a thank-you note generator tool available as a mobile app. It is also planning to add a wedding vendor budget assistant in August. Other AI platforms have been recently built out of firsthand wedding experiences, like Guestlist and When Michelle Nemirovsky, 35, and Federico Polacov, 34, of Austin, Texas, were married in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Dec 17, 2023, the couple wished they had a better way to track RSVPs and connect instantly with guests. 'People have a wedding website, but no one looks at it, and it doesn't give updates in real time,' said Nemirovsky, who, with Polacov, started Guestlist in 2024. Nemirovsky described the site as a social network that organises RSVPs and offers real-time updates. More than 7,300 people have downloaded the app since its launch, and a 24-hour AI chatbot component is in the works for later this year. Some services are free, and others require a US$10 (RM42) monthly subscription that gives unlimited photo and video uploads, and texting to guests. This year, another couple, Alvina Putri, 29, and Deepak Venkatesh, 32, of Los Angeles, created a wedding planning platform powered by AI. The couple married in Newport, Rhode Island, on Sept 17, 2023, and had longed for some help organising and executing their wedding-planning tasks. Their site can generate personalised checklists based on cultural or traditional nuances; curate vendor recommendations; manage guest lists; streamline repetitive tasks, 'like emailing vendors or chasing down RSVPs, and do smart vendor matching,' Putri said. 'Our average couple is 25 to 34, who spends over 500 hours planning their wedding,' she said. 'We're bringing that down to 50 hours.' According to Putri, some parts of the platform are free; others cost US$20 (RM85) per month or a US$200 (RM851) annual plan, which 60% to 70% of couples pay for and stay on until their wedding happens. Though most professionals and couples agreed AI is a tool, rather than a replacement for people, many said AI was doing the job of numerous people, all at once. 'Not all brides will need a full-service planner if they can do a lot of legwork themselves with AI,' Strand said. 'We only needed 'a day-of coordinator'.' Nemirovsky, though, was glad to have her planner by her side. 'The night before our wedding, a huge storm hit,' she said. 'Everything we planned was outside and needed to be inside. PETALING JAYA: The purported move by the United States to restrict shipments of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to Malaysia and Thailand is expected to draw mixed reactions among investors, says MIDF Research. However, the research house has maintained its 'positive' stance on the construction and utilities sectors, backed by optimism on the continued pipeline of data centres here. The research house was referring to a Bloomberg report, citing sources, that US president Donald Trump's administration was planning to restrict AI chips shipments to Malaysia and Thailand in a move to prevent suspected smuggling into China through intermediaries. This is part of the draft rule that is meant to replace Joe Biden's framework of AI diffusion that was rescinded in May. MIDF Research pointed out that the revised rule has yet to be finalised and could still change. The new export curbs will, however, include measures to help companies with significant business operations in Malaysia and Thailand keep their projects on track. Among the measures are a grace period for firms headquartered in the United States and 'a few dozen friendly nations' to continue shipping AI chips to both countries without a licence for a few months after the rule is published. Even after the grace period ends, the licence requirements will include certain exemptions to prevent supply chain disruptions. 'We view that this is in line with our opinion back in May when Biden's AI diffusion rule was rescinded, which is good news for tech giants as they may no longer be tied down to the 7% restriction of AI computing power to any country outside Tier 1, which allows for more AI capacities to be planned in other countries such as Malaysia,' the research house pointed out. MIDF Research opined that giants such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, which are crucial names for the hyperscale builds in Malaysia, are not expected to see much hindrance in exporting advanced AI chips to the country. It said even YTL Power International Bhd , which has an exclusive partnership with Nvidia, is not expected to be severely impacted for future AI data centre builds. MIDF Research said it is also plausible that hyperscale operators and major cloud providers may accelerate their data centre builds and rush orders for high-end AI chips now, especially before Trump's refashioned AI diffusion rule is officially announced, up until before the grace period ends.

UK businesses are dialing back hiring for jobs that are likely to be affected by the rollout of artificial intelligence, a study found, suggesting the new technology is accentuating a slowdown in the nation's labor market. Job vacancies have declined across the board in the UK as employers cut costs in the face of sluggish growth and high borrowing rates, with the overall number of online job postings down 31% in the three months to May compared with the same period in 2022, a McKinsey & Co. analysis found. But it has been the most acute for occupations expected to be significantly altered by AI: Postings for such jobs — like white-collar ones in tech or finance — dropped 38%, almost twice the decline seen elsewhere, according to the consulting firm. 'The anticipation of significant – albeit uncertain – future productivity gains, especially as the technology and its applications mature, is prompting companies to review their workforce strategies and pause aspects of their recruitment,' said Tera Allas, a senior adviser at McKinsey. The trend appears to be exerting another drag on the UK job market just as tax increases prompt cuts in lower-skilled sectors like retail and hospitality and the pace of economic growth stalls. Occupations considered to be highly exposed to AI — meaning the technology can replace at least some of the tasks involved — have recorded the sharpest contractions in vacancies, McKinsey's analysis showed. Demand for jobs such as programmers, management consultants or graphic designers fell more than 50% over the last three years. Some of that may also be due to industry-specific issues and a challenging macroeconomic backdrop. But McKinsey said in some sectors, like professional services and information technology, the number of job openings dropped even as businesses reported healthy growth rates. Data shared by job-search website Indeed also indicated early signs that AI is affecting hiring decisions. It showed that employers tend to cut hiring in fields that involve building or using AI tools, according to Pawel Adrjan, director of EMEA economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab. For example, vacancies in mathematics, which mainly consist of data science and analytics roles, had the highest share of AI mentions in job descriptions but are down almost 50% from pre-pandemic levels, Indeed figures showed. At the other end of the spectrum, real estate or education jobs that barely mention the technology grew over the period. Some entry-level jobs involving tasks like summarizing meetings or sifting through documents are particularly exposed to AI, accelerating a decline in such roles as companies streamline headcount costs. Entry-level postings, which include apprenticeships, internships or junior jobs with no degree requirements, have fallen by almost a third since ChatGPT came to market at the end of 2022, according to data from job-search website Adzuna. 'The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is adding pressure on young jobseekers, who are still in the grip of the Covid aftermath, marked by inflation, economic headwinds, and low business confidence,' said James Neave, head of data science at Adzuna. –BLOOMBERG
