Young boy who was riding a scooter dies after hit-and-run by car driver in Co Down
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed that a young boy died after the hit-and-run in the Strand area of Portaferry yesterday evening.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested and is in PSNI custody.
Collision Investigation Unit Inspector Cherith Adair said: 'Shortly after 11pm, it was reported that a red Skoda Fabia and a scooter were involved in the collision. A young boy, who was riding the scooter, was taken to hospital but sadly died as a result of his injuries.
'One man aged 51 years old was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a number of related offences. He remains in police custody at this time,' Adair said.
The PSNI is investigating the matter and is appealing for any witnesses to contact its Collision Investigation Unit detectives via 101, quoting reference number 1788 08/07/25.

It follows the arrest of a woman by Gardai earlier this week. A 60 year old man has been arrested in Derry on suspicion of the attempted murder of Donegal man Charles Dooher. The victim and his father, Charles Snr, were repeatedly beaten by a gang at their home at 10am on January 20th last. Charles Dooher senior, who is in his 60s, received treatment for less serious injuries at Letterkenny University Hospital. However, Charles Dooher Jnr was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and he was treated in intensive care for several weeks. The young farmer had a number of operations and a protective plate fitted to his head. His family, as well as his girlfriend Charlotte Gallen, kept a bedside vigil for Charles Jnr praying for hime to recover. Their prayers were answered and Charles managed to survive and recently visited his beloved local GAA club, Naomh Padraig Leifear, to watch his teammates play. Gardaí continue to appeal to the public for any information or witnesses related to this incident. Those with camera footage, including dash-cam footage, from the Coneyburrow Road in Lifford between 10am and 11am on January 20, are urged to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. How the burning of refugee effigies or mock police vehicles can be accommodated in any cultural tradition raises questions that ought to be called out. The intention is to destabilise and divide.
