Rick Singer allowed to return to college consulting business after infamous 'Varsity Blues' scandal
Rick Singer, the 64-year-old man at the center of the "Varsity Blues" college admissions scandal was allowed to return to his old job by a federal judge, but must disclose his criminal past to potential clients. Singer's new coaching company ID Future Stars, which is focused on college consulting, says it provides "comprehensive life coaching and college admissions guidance with a hands-on approach that discovers how we can best help your child achieve their dreams," according to its website. Chief District Judge Denise Casper wrote in a Monday order that Singer must provide a specific, lengthy and detailed notice to parents seeking to retain him. "In March 2019, Rick Singer pled guilty to federal charges-including racketeering conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice-for his role in what was widely-publicized as the 'Varsity Blues' college admissions scheme," the court ordered statement says. "Specifically, Mr. Singer admitted to,among other things: bribing standardized test proctors and administrators to engage in cheating on college entrance exams (i.e., the SAT and ACT); falsifying students' academic transcripts by paying third parties to take classes in their names; falsifying students' college applications with fake awards, athletic activities, and fabricated essays; and bribing college athletic coaches and administrators, through purported donations to their programs and personal bribes, to designate students as athletic recruits based on falsified athletic credentials. As part of the scheme, Mr. Singer took in more than $25 million from his clients, from which he made payments to co-conspirators totaling more than $7 million, and transferred, spent, or otherwise used more than $15 million for his own benefit." The statement ordered by the judge did not end there. "On January 4, 2023, a federal court in Boston sentenced Mr. Singer to 42 months in prison and three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay more than $10 million in restitution and to forfeit assets totaling more than $8.7 million. The U.S. Department of Justices press release announcing Mr. Singers sentence can be found at: Mr. Singer served his prison sentence and is currently on supervised release. The terms of Mr. Singer's supervised release require him to provide this disclosure," it continued. Singer was found guilty in a bribery scheme where he helped celebrities, business people and wealthy clients get their kids into elite schools. He was sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison in 2023. Prosecutors said Singer received over $25 million from clients and paid bribes which amounted to over $7 million. Singer also used over $15 million of money from clients for his own personal advantage, prosecutors also said. "Full House" actor Lori Laughlin, her husband Mossimo Giannulli and "Desperate Housewives" actor Felicity Huffman were also handed prison time for their participation in the scandal. 2025 WNBA MVP, DPOY, ROY Odds: Betting, Futures, Predictions including Clark, Collier, Thomas
It's Week 9 of the WNBA season and we have a new contender for MVP behind Minnesota's Napheesa Collier as Caitlin Clark continues to drop further out the race. For DPOY, A'ja Wilson's odds are even more tempting than ever, but is she the best bet? MVP and DPOY dds are courtesy of DraftKings and subject to change. Rookie of the Year is still being offered on FanDuel and BetMGM as Paige Bueckers runs away with the award. Next week, I will cover Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year as Rookie of the Year is all but over. WNBA MVP Ladder: Napheesa Collier (-600) continues her dominance in this market, but as Caitlin Clark (+3000) continues to drop out of the race due to too many missed games and recent performance, Alyssa Thomas (+600) has been the biggest beneficiary. Thomas went from +5000 to +2500 to +600 over the last three weeks, so she is the hottest bet in this market, but the value has pretty much disappeared. The recent movement is because of a 15-point, 15-assist and 10-rebound triple-double in a 30-point win versus Dallas. The next game, Thomas went for 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, followed by another monster performance of 17 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds. Thomas is balling right now, but the recent play is likely unsustainable. Breanna Stewart's (+2000) odds have dropped because she has shot below 50% in five straight games and gone 3-of-17 from deep in that span. It's still Collier's award to lose and I'm not hedging. WNBA DPOY Ladder: Napheesa Collier (+350) is technically second in terms of odds to win DPOY, but winning MVP and DPOY in the same season is very difficult to do. In fact, it's only been done four times since 2007 (A'ja Wilson, Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes). Collier's rise in this market is likely via the direct descent of A'ja Wilson (+250) and being the MVP favorite. Wilson missed a game after leaving in the second quarter against the Liberty, then returned for 34 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal in a 104-102 win versus Golden State. While Wilson was amazing and so are her on-and-off the court defensive splits, the Aces still allowed 102 points with her back, which is concerning. Gabby Williams (+400) is the only player in the league to average more than 2.0 steals per game (she averages 2.5), while Alanna Smith (+500) and Ezi Magbegor (+600) are two of three players to average at least 2.0 blocks per game (A'ja Wilson). The DPOY market is a crap shoot right now. I will wait to have a concrete pick to make up for the 2 units I've already deployed amongst four long shot players who aren't in the race. WNBA ROY Ladder: DraftKings shut down this market, while FanDuel and BetMGM still list odds for the race with Paige Bueckers between -5000 and -6000, while Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen are both +2500 or +3000. All three of these rookies will be represented in the WNBA All-Star game, so they've had terrific seasons, but Bueckers already locked up this award. Bueckers scored at least 20 points in eight games this season and six of the past nine outings. ‘Sullivan's Crossing' Dethroned In Netflix's Top 10 List By A New Show
Sullivan's Crossing It's Tuesday, and unlike Squid Game, a new show at #1 on Netflix's Top 10 list could not stand up to the behemoth that is Netflix's big Monday night program. That would of course be WWE Monday Night RAW, which has now unseated Netflix's big licensed hit, Sullivan's Crossing, which has ascended the ranks and become a rare, non-Netflix-original. Sullivan's Crossing has been planted at #1 for a while now, the low key, drama-romance series that originally aired on CTV and the CW airing two seasons on Netflix. Viewers can already watch season 3 of the series, but not on Netflix, rather on the CW site or app, which will be full of ads, but at least it's better than nothing. It should be on Netflix in August, however. Season 4 of Sullivan's Crossing is already greenlit, and presumably Netflix will snag that as well, given how well these first two seasons are performing. Top 10 Squid Game season 3 remains at #3 well after launch, no great surprise given its record-setting performance at release, and it continues to climb the overall most-watched charts on Netflix. It's been there so long it doesn't even have a 'new season' badge on it anymore. A new season of Quarterback, the Drive to Survive-for-the-NFL series, has now hit Netflix, coming in at #4 currently. This time around the show is following the lives and games of Joe Burrow, Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins over the course of last season. The first season did well, and this seems like a show that's going to air for quite a while here. The Waterfront, the original Netflix crime drama, is still in the top 5 at #5, and fans are still waiting for news about the show being renewed for a second season. As I've said before, I believe this is almost a sure thing, given its performance, but it can just take a while to get these sorts of things finalized, and I'm expecting we will hear something in the coming weeks. The final season of Sandman did not do amazingly well, down to #9 already, but that was the last one, so it doesn't exactly matter. One not-amazing story so far is the recent debut of Lena Dunham's comedy Too Much, which has arrived at #10, quite poor for a new series, and may drop off the list in short order.
