Phillies will again look to big boppers in finale vs. Angels

Reuters5 days ago
July 20 - Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper are giving the Los Angeles Angels all they can handle this weekend.
The Philadelphia Phillies hope for another powerful performance from their left-handed sluggers on Sunday when they conclude their three-game home series with the Angels.
Schwarber has homered in each of the first two games of the series, including a go-ahead grand slam in Saturday's 9-5 victory. His impressive week also included MVP honors at Tuesday's All-Star Game after he swatted homers on all three of his swings during the tie-breaking home run derby.
Meanwhile, Harper homered twice in Friday's series opener -- a 6-5 win by Los Angeles -- and delivered another blast in Saturday's win. He is 5-for-8 with four runs scored in the series.
The power surge by Schwarber and Harper has certainly been a welcomed sight for a Phillies team that has struggled to hit home runs (outside of Schwarber) for much of the season.
"It's just the way this game goes," Schwarber said after the win. "You want to be able to feel like you're going to be able to score runs in different ways."
Philadelphia needs its power hitters to produce more than ever with third baseman Alec Bohm -- the team's typical clean-up hitter -- on the injured list with a rib fracture.
"It could be three weeks. It could be four weeks," manager Rob Thomson said. "It could be less than that. I hate putting timelines on anything."
The Angels have enjoyed some home run fun of their own in the first two games of the series. Taylor Ward has gone deep in both contests, as has Jo Adell. In total, the visitors have cranked out six home runs -- three in each game.
Instead, Saturday's culprit was the Los Angeles bullpen. Angels relievers gave up seven runs in three innings pitched. But Los Angeles interim manager Ray Montgomery isn't losing any confidence in his relievers.
"They're young. They're still battling through it," he said. "They haven't figured out who they are yet entirely. So we're going to continue putting them in situations like that and look for the best spots -- and, hopefully, they make the pitches they need to make."
The Angels will aim to rebound behind right-hander Jose Soriano (6-7, 3.90 ERA), who will be starting against the Phillies for the first time. He faced Philadelphia once as a reliever in 2023 and allowed a two-run triple to Trea Turner during a brief stint on the mound.
Soriano's last start came July 13 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He gave up five runs, but only one earned, in five innings in a 5-1 defeat.
Ranger Suarez (7-3, 2.15) will get the ball for Philadelphia after a solid first half in which he gave up three runs or fewer in each of his last 12 starts. Most recently, the lefty allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings in a 4-2 loss to the San Diego Padres on July 11.
Suarez, who has never previously faced the Angels, was at peace with not getting selected for the National League All-Star team.
"Obviously it's what you want -- you want to go to the All-Star Game. But I'd rather have some rest right now," he said prior to the break. "I think it's what's best for us, for the team and it's a long second half that we're going to have. So, I want to remain as healthy and as fresh as I can."

Claressa Shields-Laila Ali: Will the GWOAT and Muhammad Ali's daughter finally fight?

Boxing 's self-proclaimed GWOAT (Greatest Woman Of All Time) Claressa Shields will be back in the ring on Saturday to defend her undisputed heavyweight status against Lani Daniels in Detroit. Shields is never short of confidence, and that is hardly a surprise given what she has already achieved in her career at the age of 30. The American superstar won two Olympic golds and two World Championship titles as an amateur and has claimed world honours in five different weight divisions since switching to the professional ranks. She is also the only boxer – male or female – to be the undisputed champion in three different weight classes. It is hard to see what else she can do to further her legacy, which begs the question: if she gets past Daniels, what's next? Well, the outspoken Shields has talked up a super-fight with Laila Ali – the daughter of boxing icon Muhammad Ali. But is it realistic? Subscribe to DAZN now to watch over 185 fights a year Ali's inactivity Laila followed in her father's footsteps to win titles in two divisions during her own career before retiring undefeated with 24 wins to her name, including 21 knockouts. She is widely regarded as one of the best female fighters ever. There's just one issue – she has not boxed since 2007. Ali is now 47 and has been retired for almost two decades. In the meantime, she has developed into a TV personality, appearing on some of America's biggest shows including Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer. Yet she has remained in tip-top condition since hanging up her gloves and has teased a dramatic comeback to take on Shields. Shields calls Ali's bluff In order to make a return, Ali has made it clear she wants to be paid well. She recently claimed it would take a purse of $15million to tempt her back into the ring for the Shields showdown. Shields responded by posing with a cheque displaying that figure to make a statement that she wants to do everything possible to get the fight made. But Ali has been talking about this fight for several years and it hasn't materialised yet. Back in 2020, she insisted a bout with Shields was 'absolutely possible' but conceded she would no longer be the same force she was in her prime. Five years down the line, Ali is unlikely to be in better shape, and the window is closing on finally making this fight happen. Shields has family plans Shields revealed this week that she wants to have a baby within the next 12 months as she looks to start a family. She plans to return to boxing after giving birth, but having a child would keep her out of the sport for a significant period. If she goes through with her family plans next year, the timeline to face Ali becomes very limited. It would have to happen next as Ali would be pushing 50 by the time Shields came back into the sport. Pacquiao shows Ali the way If Ali needed any inspiration for a comeback, she need look no further than Manny Pacquiao 's performance last weekend. Pacquiao returned from a four-year absence to push WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios all the way to a majority draw in Las Vegas. The Filipino legend is 46 and proved fighters can make successful comebacks after a lengthy hiatus. Of course, there is a big difference between being away from boxing for four years and the 18 years it has been since Ali last laced up her gloves. Ali would have a lot of ring-rust to shake off and must decide whether she really wants to risk her unbeaten record against Shields after being retired for so long. Will Shields vs Ali happen? Shields likes to put on a show, but she is running out of legitimate opponents. Calling out an all-time great with a legendary father is certainly a smart business move on her part. Ali also seems to be on board if the funds can be raised to give her a career-best payday. And that's ultimately what it may all hinge on – money. There would be plenty of interest in two greats of the sport facing each other, with fans eager to see if Ali has still got it. There is also genuine animosity between the pair, meaning the build-up to the fight would be electric. If promoters can get together and ensure both women are paid well, we could finally see Shields vs Ali, and someone's 0 would have to go. SafeSport Center opens search for new CEO

The U.S. Center for SafeSport posted the opening for a new chief executive officer on Thursday, hoping to find a leader to steer the agency into a new era after several troubled years as a start-up. The center, a non-profit that opened in 2017 and is charged with handling sex-abuse cases in Olympic sports, hired consulting firm Korn Ferry to lead the search and work with a search committee made of center board members and advisors. 'This is more than a job search. It is a reflection of our values and the people we are accountable to — our staff, athletes, and the broader sport community," said Board Vice Chair and search committee lead Chicka Elloy. April Holmes stepped away from her duties as board chair to serve as interim CEO in place of Ju'Riese Colon while the search takes place. The center parted ways with Colon in April, not long after Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, began querying the center when details emerged about its hiring of an investigator who would later be charged with rape. The center, which also opened a search for a new chief financial officer, said Korn Ferry 'is currently conducting organizational assessments and confidential outreach to identify candidates who exemplify both executive acumen and a people-first philosophy.' The job description said the center was looking for someone with a 'deep understanding of the sports ecosystem and/or experience working in fields related to abuse prevention, compliance, or athlete advocacy.' It said the targeted salary would be between $250,000-$300,000. ___ AP sports:

The British driver secured four wins and seven podiums with his team this season and it was his first championship in seven seasons in Formula E. Rowland isn't one for the glitz and glamour of motor-sport, and is quiet off the track, preferring to do his talking in the car. He has spent the past week celebrating his title by spending quality time with Harper and his wife Lauren. They even took a trip to Legoland where Rowland couldn't help coach his daughter on the smaller cars, although she was too young to get her driver's license. He said: "It was my daughter's birthday last Tuesday, so I spent the full day at Legoland celebrating I was absolutely knackered by the end of the day! "She wasn't tall enough to get her driver's license but she went on the baby cars and I was asking her to get her head down like they do in go karts it was so funny." Rowland has been known to celebrate his wins with a "few beers" this season, but he will be taking that up a notch with a team trip to Ibiza after this weekend's final race in London. "I just thought it was something different and nice to do for them. Let them have a nice two or three days. Glamorous TikToker Bianca Bustamante gives behind-the-scenes look at a Formula E race week "I wanted to appreciate all the work that the whole team does and it was a gesture to show my appreciation. We can have a bit of fun together." Rowland has a presence in F1, and has been with Alpine for 10-years helping with testing. He also enjoyed a short stint as a junior driver for Williams in 2018. He still has a presence in the sport, mentoring F1 prospect and Red Bull junior driver, Arvid Lindblad. And is good pals with four-time world champion Max Verstappen who wished him luck ahead of Berlin. Rowland added: "He sent me a message on on Saturday night, telling me to score points and calm down a little bit, "Then on Sunday, he told me, well done so yeah, it was really nice for him, because I was feeling pretty down after Saturday's mistake and he reached out. "Just said 'yeah look, you got this, you're doing a good job'." Rowland's most treasured congratulatory message remains from his daughter Harper though. Being a 'girl dad' is his biggest achievement and wife Lauren is pregnant with baby number 2. He added: "At the beginning I always wanted to have a boy but another girl like Harper would be super cute."
