Deeptech startups raked in $324 million in first four months of this year

Time of India15-05-2025
The R&D-focused and innovation-anchored deeptech ecosystem, contrary to perception, is lately drawing more money—and deals.
Venture Intelligence
data showed investments in deeptech doubled in the first four months of 2025 to $324 million across 35 deals, compared with $156 million in the same period last year that saw 21 such commitments.
Some of the biggest deeptech deals in 2025 included a $90 million investment in
Netradyne
, an AI-based fleet management platform, by Qualcomm Ventures, Point72 Ventures and others; $54 million in SpotDraft, an AI-based contract management firm, from Trident Capital and others; $35 million investment in predictive maintenance service platform Infinite Uptime by Tiger Global, GSR Ventures and $21 million in Tonbo Imaging, which offers imaging and sensor systems to military, by Florintree and others.
Deeptech broadly refers to technology-based innovation that hinges on advanced scientific and engineering research, which require significant expertise, capital and time.
While union minister
Piyush Goyal
's comment on the lack of a deeptech ecosystem certainly triggered the conversation, deeptech ecosystem has been seeing increasing interest for a while now.

Krishnakumar Natarajan, managing partner, Mela Ventures, said that unlike a few years ago, deeptech is seeing more commercial use cases making the sector attractive.
Ganapathy Subramaniam, managing partner, Yali Capital, which has Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan as an advisor, said that there are more companies that are being created in deeptech now than before. This is formed by people from premier institutions and executives from multinational companies, who are choosing to stay back in the country.
Vinod Shankar, co-founder, Java Capital, a deeptech fund, said that recent times have seen several government initiatives that attempt to grow the deeptech ecosystem in the country such as Rs 10,000 crore fund of funds to invest in deeptech and other initiatives that support semiconductors, space, and biotech.
All these are resulting in increased competition for deeptech deals in India.
Rising competition
A partner from a deeptech fund told ET that they are now competing with larger players in early stage deeptech deals and are closing more as well. 'This year alone we have closed 4-5 deals at a higher valuation. We used to do 7-8 per year,' the investor said.
Java Capital's Shankar said that initial investment for deeptech companies is now upwards of $4-5 million now, compared to $2-3 million a couple of years ago.
Co-investing is also gaining momentum. For instance, Mela Ventures has invested along with Blume in Optimized ElectroTech, a defence technology startup.
Challenges Persist
Mela's Natarajan said that, unlike consumer technology startups, the model of investment for deeptech needs to be different as it takes a longer time to commercialise. 'If it is a 3–5-year horizon for consumer technology startups, in deeptech it requires 8-10 years. They also need intense involvement, hand-holding and mentoring to help them through the process,' he explained.
In addition, one of the key challenges is also market creation. Natarajan explained that in many cases these startups are catering to the market that either does not exist or require firms to adopt a newer way. While funds like them are helping companies to reach the commercialisation stage, there is a need for intervention to drive market adoption. 'Like how the government offered subsidies for EVs (electric vehicles) there must be some incentives for customers to adopt deeptech solutions,' he added.

Govt to soon issue new guidelines to promote exports in new markets: Goyal

The government will soon issue new guidelines to promote the country's shipments in new markets and support first-time exporters, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday. He said that the ministry will partner with districts to promote one district one product (ODOP) goods. "The commerce ministry will soon be coming out with some more guidelines on how we can promote (exports in) new markets, new products and new exporters, first-time exporters," Goyal said while addressing the National One District One Product (ODOP) 2024 Award ceremony here. He said that India is like an oasis in a desert in a tumultuous world and is the fastest-growing large economy in the world today. India will become the third-largest economy in 2027, the minister said, adding, "we have so many diverse products that can take India globally". Citing examples of Wayanad's coffee, Ratnagiri mangoes, and saffron from Pulwama, he said that these represent the wide range of products that can take India's name to the world. He informed that 27 states have been approved for setting up PM Ekta Mall, which will promote products from different states. Under the ODOP initiative, the government has identified over 1,200 unique products from more than 750 districts across the country, spanning sectors such as agriculture, food processing, handloom, handicrafts, and others. These efforts are aimed at promoting value addition, marketing, and connecting local products with global markets.

India, US talks for proposed trade pact going on at a very fast pace: Piyush Goyal

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The negotiations between India and the US for a proposed trade agreement are going at a fast pace, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Indian team has reached Washington for the next round of talks on the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement."Negotiations are going on at a very fast pace and in the spirit of mutual cooperation so that we can come out with a win-win trade complementing agreement with the United States," Goyal told reporters Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal at a separate event said that negotiations for proposed trade agreements with the European Union (EU) and the US are going said that the free trade agreements (FTAs) that India is doing are one of the key enablers to promote global capability centres (GCCs) in the country."So if you look at the free trade agreements today, which we are doing with the UK, which we have just announced, with European Union (EU), which is going on, with the US again discussions are on with several other countries in the world," Barthwal said here at CII GCC Business Summit and the US are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). They are targeting to conclude the first phase of the pact by fall (September-October) of this India and the EU are also negotiating an June 2022, India and the 27-nation EU bloc resumed negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a pact on geographical indications (GIs) after a gap of over eight talks stalled in 2013 due to differences over the level of opening up of the markets. India and the EU are targeting to conclude the free trade deal by the end of this the secretary said that today's agreements are different from the traditional FTAs, which were confined to traditional trade, tariffs and manufacturing. The new pacts are a more complex set of agreements which include services, a regulatory system in services, including the FDI (foreign direct investment)."Those are being looked at (in the new pacts)," he said, adding that now there is also an institutional mechanism in these pacts to look at issues like harmonising regulations and these are important facets of GCCs, he said, adding that modern FTAs will lead to the innovation corridor, which will facilitate GCCs in India "We are looking at the IPR (intellectual property rights) chapters. We are looking at what the coordination mechanism will be in case disputes arise. That is another area which we look at in FTAs," the secretary the new age pacts focus on principles of digital trade, which the partner countries have to adopt."If there is a data localisation or data privacy laws, then how will they be looked at. That is another angle, which we define in these FTAs," he new trade agreements, Barthwal said, are addressing a whole gamut of issues. "And therefore, it is taking a lot of time when we do these FTAs. There are detailed discussions, detailed deliberations, and detailed stakeholder consultation," he added that in the FTA with the UK, there is a chapter on innovation, which was not the case earlier. There is also a mechanism to set up innovation working groups under that deal, which was announced on May 6, but has not yet been signed."The ultimate point of these FTAs is that once these are (businesses) will get certainty about those regulations, because those regulations are not going to change unless and until you have agreed differently. And it gives certainty," Barthwal said.
