Ali Oliver highlights importance of keeping children active
Oliver was at Dame Dorothy Primary School in Sunderland for a day packed with sport and activity as they kicked off the campaign which promotes the importance of daily physical activity by encouraging schools, families, and communities to engage in 60 minutes of PE, sport, and play.
Pupils were involved in a Girls Active session where leaders from the student body taught sessions to younger years and PE classes using National School Sports Week resources.
It marked the start of a week dedicated to bringing attention to the need for children to spend 60 minutes active each day.
'National School Sports Week is an opportunity to shine a light on why it's important children are active and get those important messages across about not just physical health, but social wellbeing in the digital age,' said Oliver.
'Playing together physically is really important for the cognitive benefits, because sadly lots of adults will judge physical education on their own experiences.
'Today's generation is a much more sedentary generation, and it's really important that the school day compensates for some of the time that young people are more sedentary in the rest of their lives.'
The annual campaign highlights and aims to change worrying statistics that indicate children are less active than ever.
Research shows that fewer than half (47%) of children are meeting the Chief Medical Officers' guidelines of engaging in an average of 60 minutes or more of sport and physical activity daily.
In Sunderland, where the week was launched 25% of children in reception are overweight or obese - and over 40% by Year 6.
But the Youth Sport Trust are on a mission to change the direction of travel and transform the lives of young people through sport.
'[We want] to equip educators and empower young people so together they can create brighter futures through the power of play and sport,' explained Oliver.
'We have a wonderful vision, which is a future where every child enjoys the life-changing benefits of PE and sport.
'We also deliver a number of products and services which schools can use to help them think more creatively, whether it's about how they use their playground, or how they make their maths lessons more active.'

A FURIOUS dad has slammed teachers for allowing his child to 'fry in 30-degree heat without sun cream' on a school trip. Simon Oakley claims his 12-year-old son Oliver came home from Barcelona with agonising second degree burns. 4 4 4 4 The Parklands High School pupil set off for Spain from Chorley, Lancashire, for a week-long holiday with classmates and spent nearly 24 hours travelling to the country via coach. But fuming dad Simon says the nightmare happened on the final day when the school trip took them to a water park. Simon, a self-employed furniture maker, said: "When I saw how bad the burns were, I was extremely upset. 'I feel incredibly let down and disappointed with the school. 'Oliver told me that the sunburn happened on the final day. The kids spent the full day at a water park. 'We later learned from Oliver that he hadn't had any sun cream on all day and wasn't wearing a T-shirt or a hat." Simon continued: 'This left him fully exposed to the 30-degree sun and heat. 'We found out about his sunburn on Thursday evening while he was travelling back. 'He sent us a few messages saying his shoulders and back were really sore, and even did a short video so his mum and I could see how red and blistered his skin was. 'Over the next 48 hours, the blisters got much worse and new ones kept developing.' I laid on the beach for just ONE hour but the sunburn was brutal and left me looking like a wasp-stung dog - don't make my mistake Simon claims Oliver was given paracetamol and heavy-duty plasters were applied to his burns but the youngster was in 'agony' by the time he got home. Oliver's parents rushed him to Preston Royal Hospital for treatment. Nurses allegedly confirmed that the burns were of a second degree nature and popped his blisters before peeling away the damaged skin. Simon said: 'They headed home straight from the water park at around tea time. 'It was only on the bus journey back, which took over 24 hours, that the burns and blisters started to develop and he was in agony for the majority of the journey back. 'He did let the teachers know towards the end of the journey, and they stuck some plasters on his blisters and gave him a paracetamol.' The family have since lodged a formal complaint with the school. 'SCREAMING IN AGONY' Simon was left unimpressed with the school's response to the situation, he claimed: 'They gave him some paracetamol and then applied heavy-duty plasters to the blisters. 'The plasters had to be peeled off the next day at hospital, which left Oliver screaming in agony and in tears on the floor. 'I submitted a formal complaint to the school. The headteacher phoned me back but I was essentially told there was nothing more that could have been done for my son - even though seven teachers were on the trip.' Parklands High School were contacted for comment on multiple occasions but a reporter was told over the phone by a receptionist that 'no one was available' to comment. Oliver went on the school trip on May 24 to May 30. But his dad says it has taken the child's skin 'about a month' to 'get back to normal' and he has some very faint scars from the burns. Simon added: 'He's okay now but is a little wary about going out in the sun because of what happened. "I just want other parents to know this can happen and schools need to take sun safety seriously. 'No child should come home in that kind of pain after what's meant to be a fun trip."

Pensioner accidentally pepper sprays entire spa, injuring 13 people
An 80-year-old woman is being investigated by police after accidentally letting off pepper spray in a spa in Germany. At around 9.50am on Wednesday, the pensioner began rummaging through her handbag in the entrance of the Keidel Thermal Baths in Freiburg, a city in southwest Germany's Black Forest region. According to local media, she wanted to show the spray to a friend. Instead, she accidentally activated the spray, releasing the toxic substance throughout the foyer. The irritant then reportedly spread throughout the building through the ventilation system. Thirteen visitors to the thermal baths were affected by the incident and complained of eye irritation. Emergency services, including police and fire personnel, attended the scene and treated the injured. According to BILD, the pensioner was one of those injured. The entire pool was evacuated for around 30 minutes for safety reasons, while the entrance area was mechanically ventilated by emergency services, before guests were allowed to return. The 80-year-old is reportedly being investigated for negligent bodily harm. In a statement to The Independent, Oliver Heintz, director of Keidel Mineral-Thermalbad, said:'We regret the incident and the inconvenience caused to our guests. 'The situation was handled quickly and professionally by our team and the emergency services. 'We are in close contact with the authorities and will take the necessary steps to support a thorough clarification.' The Independent has contacted local police for further comment. Pepper spray is a non-lethal self-defence tool made from oleoresin capsicum (OC), a chemical derived from hot chilli peppers. It causes a severe burning sensation in the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, leading to temporary blindness, coughing, difficulty breathing and intense pain. Pepper spray is illegal to buy, sell or carry in the UK and is classed as an offensive weapon. In Germany, however, pepper spray is legal for use against animals and people 'in self-defence situations' and can be purchased by people as young as 14 years old. In 2023, an American Airlines flight was forced to land more than 800 miles from its destination after a passenger released pepper spray into the cabin. The incident was described by one passenger as 'incredibly scary not being able to breathe'. According to the US Transportation Security Administration, pepper spray is not allowed in carry-on bags.

'Little miracle' Oliver Mason has a date for first surgery
PARENTS of a Powys baby have been given a date for his heart operation, which will take place early next month. The plight of seven-month-old Oliver Mason was highlighted last month when parents Alice and Toby spoke about how their world had been turned upside down after doctors discovered heart complications just hours after he came into the world. Oliver was rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where he spent two weeks – Alice didn't couldn't spend the first two days of her baby son's life with him, because she had to wait to be discharged. Oliver was diagnosed with Pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect (PA-VSD) – a congenital heart condition where the pulmonary artery is completely blocked, as well as a large hole between the two main pumping chambers. It was also discovered he had MAPCAs, or Major Aortopulmonary Collateral Arteries, abnormal connections between the aorta and the pulmonary vascular system. After finally returning home, they then spent Christmas in the care of doctors and nurses after he contracted a virus – with surgery required eventually. Now, Alice and Toby have been told that the first surgery for their 'little miracle' is booked for July 4. 'We are both feeling very overwhelmed,' said Alice, 33. 'We knew the surgery would be soon but now we have a date it's very realistic. We know this is what's right for Oliver and the operation will start the proceedings of fixing his heart.' Alice said the couple, who live in Llanwrthwl, between Rhayader and Newbridge-on-Wye, have also been blown away by the response to their original story. 'The response to the story has been amazing,' she added. 'The fundraiser is going well and we hope that people can still keep donating what they can, ready for the trip in two weeks' time (to the hospital).' Alice revealed that while they wanted to raise awareness of Oliver's condition, they had also hoped for a little help financially, as self-employed Toby was no longer working due to tending to Oliver, while credit card debt had started to mount due to hotel stays during previous hospital visits. 'Some of the donations received are from people we know, but some of them are from people we don't know personally,' she said. 'One unknown donation came through for £200 which we were shocked and very moved by. Overall, all donations have been gratefully received.' Alice had been told she could not have children due to suffering with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. So they couple were 'over the moon' when they discovered they were pregnant. Oliver was born weighing a healthy 7lb 13oz, with Alice describing him as 'absolute perfection', but they soon had to face the challenges of their baby's rare condition.
