Vicky Kaushal On Financial Struggles During Childhood: 'I Was Born And Brought Up In A Chawl'
Being born into a film industry family might sound glamorous, but Vicky and Sunny Kaushal's early life was anything but flashy. Their father, veteran action director Sham Kaushal, is now opening up about what those early days were really like – and how the lessons from those times shaped his sons into who they are today.
In a candid conversation with Aman Aujla on YouTube, Sham revisited the tough years that grounded their family. Forget film premieres and red carpets – the Kaushals once lived in a 10×10 foot room, sharing thin bedding laid over a cement floor.
'They were both born in a 10×10 chawl," Sham recalled, adding, 'We used to sleep on a thin mattress on a cement floor. Then we moved to a bigger chawl with two rooms. Then we moved into a flat. They've seen my journey with their own eyes."
Sham never felt the need to sit Vicky or Sunny down for lessons on humility. Instead, life did the talking. 'They didn't have to be told about how hard life is. They've seen me when I owned a motorcycle, and then bought a second-hand Fiat car. I would come home in the evening and cry in front of them if someone had insulted me at work. I think it's foolish for a man to hide his emotions."
Despite working behind the scenes as a stunt coordinator – often considered a 'below-the-line" job in Bollywood – Sham made sure his sons saw the reality of that world. The lack of glam, the long hours, the disrespect that sometimes came with the territory – all of it became part of their upbringing.
'I never put any pressure on my sons. I told them to do what made them happy, the only thing I said to them was, 'Be good human beings'," he said. 'One of the biggest principles in life is that a child will learn what they see around them. Vicky and Sunny saw it all."
Vicky Kaushal, now one of Bollywood's most bankable stars, echoed his father's words on a separate podcast appearance with Raj Shamani. He talked about how growing up in a modest household helped him see the film industry for what it really is.
'When you are born into a family where somebody is working in the film industry, the advantage is that you know the harsh reality of the industry," Vicky said. 'You know that it's not all glitter and glamour and it has a flip side too."
He continued, 'I was born and brought up in a chawl, I have lived in a 10×10 room and I have seen how my parents got furniture one by one and how we have transitioned from small spaces to big spaces. Like how we have moved from chawl to 1BHK then to 2BHK, so that struggle was never hidden from us and I always knew the flip side of this industry and that it isn't easy."
The journey has clearly come full circle. Vicky recently scored the biggest hit of his career with Chhaava, a historical drama that crossed Rs 800 crore worldwide. Meanwhile, Sunny Kaushal was last seen in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. Vicky is currently shooting with Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War.

Saiyaara box office: Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda starrer crushes Sikandar, Raid 2, Sitaare Zameen Par & Housefull 5 to become 2nd fastest entrant to Rs 100 crore club
Looking at the current trend, Saiyaara has all the potential to enter the Rs 200 crore club, with no major releases scheduled for the coming weekend, except for the Marvel biggie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps read more Ahaan Panday & Aneet Padda starrer Saiyaara is performing way beyond its expectations at the box office. The Mohit Suri directorial, which enjoyed a phenomenal opening weekend, entered the Rs 100 crore club on its fourth day and emerged as the second-fastest film of 2025 to achieve this milestone, after Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava, surpassing biggies like Sitaare Zameen Par, Raid 2, Housefull 5, Sky Force, and Sikandar. Fastest entrant club to Rs 100 crore club STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Chhaava - 3 days Saiyaara - 4 days Sky Force - 8 days Sitaare Zameen Par - 9 days Raid 2 - 9 days Housefull 5 - 10 days Sikandar - 11 days Looking at the current trend, _Saiyaara_ has all the potential to enter the Rs 200 crore club, with no major releases scheduled for the coming weekend, except for the Marvel biggie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Despite not going all out with the promotions, Saiyaara garnered unprecedented excitement among the cinegoers. Before the release of the movie, director Mohit Suri spoke about it and told Firstpost, 'I've been inside the studio for the last one month. I have no idea. And unlike the past when people travel from one studio to another, this is everything inhouse at YRF. So I haven't really gone out and met the world outside. Normally, when you are working on other films, you go out for the day; for sound, edit, and VFX. It was different different places. And just hearing it now, it does feel it does feel very redeeming and validating because when I started off this film, I was quite discouraged by a lot of senior people saying that nobody would be interested in a young love story. Because at that time, larger-than-life films were being made and I just thought that my voice would be lost there when everyone was shouting. So I just went and tried to make a film which is very different from what others were doing. And to me, the fact that people are appreciating that the difference that it's standing out means a lot.'

F1 Global Box Office Update: Brad Pitt's racing film swiftly glides towards USD 500 million worldwide courtesy excellent late legs.
F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem stands at a solid USD 434 million at the end of Sunday, the 20th of July, 2025. The Brad Pitt movie has been crushing all the trade predictions and expectations, every week; right from when the advance bookings opened, to almost a month after, as you read this article. F1 Is Seeing Its Theatrical Legs Improve Every Week The strong word of mouth of F1 has resulted in excellent box office legs. The holds are improving by the week, despite new competition. While the domestic collections are more or less in range, it is the collections internationally, especially in major Asian markets like China, Korea and obviously India, that are driving the film to global numbers that are higher than predicted. Talking more about India, the film opened to a very good Rs 5.25 crore net on day 1, including early shows. It stands at a blockbuster Rs 80 crore net now, and is still going strong in week 4. F1 Has Been Crushing All Projections, Every Week, At The Box Office A few weeks back, USD 500 million was said to be the film's ceiling. The lower estimates were at a modest USD 450 million. Now, the range has gone up to USD 550 million. This would be the first big theatrical win for Apple. Apple has mostly produced films for digital viewing and theatrical is considered to be an add on. None of their films have broken even theatrically so far, but F1 just might be the first. F1 Is Expected To Perform Strongly Once It Hits Digital F1 has already developed a cult following and these are good signs for the film's post theatrical shelf life. Apple is expected to make good streaming revenue because of the film's rewatchability factor. And who knows, we may also have a sequel to F1 with Damon Idris leading it, one day. F1 In Theatres
