Karnataka Revenue Minister questions H.D. Deve Gowda's silence over Mekedatu project

Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has questioned former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda's silence over the Mekedatu project even after the people of the State supported the BJP-JD(S) coalition in the last Lok Sabha polls. Speaking at Yuva Parva, a convention organised by the youth wing of the Congress party at Channarayapatna on Sunday, Mr. Byre Gowda said that former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda had assured the people that he would get approval for the Mekedatu project within hours if the State elected a good number of JD(S)-BJP seats in the Lok Sabha polls. 'The people elected the candidates of the coalition partners. However, Mr. Deve Gowda has not spoken a word about the project even more than a year after the elections. The people of Karnataka suffered even after electing the coalition candidates,' he said. He also pointed out that despite assuring ₹5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra project, the Central government had not released even a single rupee for the same. Besides that, the Revenue Minister added that the Centre had been attempting to impose the Hindi language on the people of Karnataka. Mr. Byre Gowda said that he, as Revenue Minister, had brought significant changes in the State. 'The people would be benefited by the changes. The party workers should work towards bringing the party back to power in the next elections,' he added. MLA for Arsikere K.M. Shivalinge Gowda said that the State had been denied its share in tax collection. 'Against ₹4.5 lakh crore collected from the State, only ₹65,000 crore had been returned. Despite the difficulties, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been successfully leading the administration,' he said. He opined that the Congress party would be strengthened in Hassan if a person from the district was appointed Minister in charge of the district. 'We will show the power of the Congress party if a person from the district is appointed Minister in charge of the district. We should work towards winning all seven assembly constituencies in the next election,' he added. Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad, MP for Hassan Shreyas Patel, and others were present.

I do not expect BJP to come to a public debate on development works in Karnataka: CM

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he does not expect the BJP leaders to come to a public debate on the development works in the State, in response to his invitation. When asked if he expected the BJP leaders to take part in a debate, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he had invited them several times earlier also. 'People who lie do not come,' he said, dubbing the BJP leaders as 'liars'. However, the Chief Minister said he was ready to participate in the debate if the BJP leaders came forward. The Congress government organised a convention in Vijayanagar earlier this year to mark two years of its rule in the State, he said, adding that the 'BJP's lies' about the State government were exposed with more than two lakh people participating in the programme. The State government was spending ₹52,000 crore every year on the guarantee programmes. He said the BJP, which criticises the State government, had copied its guarantee programmes in other States. GST WOES OF SMALL TRADERS With regard to complaints of small traders receiving notices from the Commercial Taxes Department for transactions through UPI, Mr. Siddaramaiah said his government will discuss the matter with the Centre and the department and will make a decision. He said Goods and Sales Tax (GST) Council does not come under the State government. However, the government will take up the matter with the Union government and discuss it with the State's Commercial Taxes Department. When asked about the invitation extended by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's son and Minister for Information and Technology Nara Lokesh to companies to invest in their State following Karnataka government's decision to drop notification for land acquisition in Devanahalli, Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that no company will leave Karnataka. 'We did not say that we will not give land to investors. We will give land. No industry will leave Karnataka,' Mr. Siddaramaiah said, ruling out any capital flight from Karnataka despite the 'politics' played by Mr. Naidu and his son.

West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya: Man with no follower in BJP, yet trusted to unite a fractured party

KOLKATA: Without a pause, he can recite the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das and Shakti Chattopadhyay one after another. Closely associated with the RSS for more than five decades, Samik Bhattacharya, known for his calm demeanour and poetic sensibilities, is now at the helm of West Bengal BJP as its new state president. The saffron party has handed him the baton to lead the organisation into the crucial Assembly elections that are just 9-10 months away. Originally from Panchanantala in Howrah, Bhattacharya first came into contact with the RSS there. During his student days at Cotton College in Guwahati, he briefly worked with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). A good speaker in Bengali, English and Hindi, the 61-year-old Bhattacharya has consistently maintained his stance with dignity and without a trace of malice toward his opponents. He has endured several political ups and downs. At one point, he had to face internal strife within the Youth Morcha. Yet he remained unwavering in his mission. When confronted with uncomfortable questions about his past in the party, Bhattacharya often responds by quoting his favourite Bengali poet, Premendra Mitra. His loyalty to the BJP is resolute. He reportedly remains indifferent to internal gossip or dissent. Bhattacharya was first elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in a by-election from the Basirhat South constituency a decade ago. Though his tenure as an MLA was brief, he earned praise for his eloquent speeches in the Assembly. However, back then, he was not particularly known as a strong organiser.
